"Chak De India" (Hindi: चक दे इंडिया, Urdu: چک دے انڈیا, translation: "Bottoms Up India" or "Come On India") is a Hindi film, directed by Shimit Amin starring Shahrukh Khan and Vidya Malvade in lead roles. The film is Amin's second directorial venture after Ab Tak Chhappan which was produced by Ram Gopal Varma.
On 30 August, 2007 the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences requested a copy of the "Chak De India" script for a place in the Margaret Herrick library.[1]
This movie is inspired by the life of former Indian Hockey Goalkeeper and coach of the women's Indian Hockey team,Mir Ranjan Negi, and his contribution in driving the women's Indian Hockey team to win the 2002 Commonwealth Games held in Manchester. The film opened with an average of 22 Crores which increased in the 2nd week to 65.5 crs according to Mouthshut.com.

Synopsis
The movie begins with Kabir Khan (Shahrukh Khan) playing Hockey at the World Cup finals as the Indian team captain against Pakistan. The Indian team was lagging behind Pakistan and gets one penalty opportunity, which Kabir fails to score which leads to them losing the match. Not only that, Kabir is labeled as a traitor of the country who has been involved in match fixing. He leaves his hometown along with his mother and goes into exile, no one knows where he disappears off to.
Seven years later, Kabir returns with hopes to become the coach for the National Women’s Hockey team of India. He easily gets the position, as no one in the management even cared about their team anymore, as cricket was the only "true sport" of the country.
Sixteen state champions come together to form a national team, but none of them had enough practice or zeal to win the tournament. They had been used to losing. A few disputes occur between the girls from different regions and languages until finally team spirit is ignited within them by Mr. Kabir Khan. They even have a boys vs. girl’s hockey match where girls nearly beat the boys, but acquire a greater reward, the "green light" to go onto the World Cup tournament.
On the first match in World Cup Tournament, Australia beats India 7-0. But again it’s the coach who comes to rescue girls team with inspiring words about team spirit. The following matches with England, Spain, New Zealand, and South Africa, India is victorious.
Then came tougher matches against Argentina, who plays rougher than what the Indian team is used to.
South Korea is their next opponent which they use the strategy of Bindya Nayak, the teams rebel. Their victory against South Korea takes them to the finals, where they once again face off against Australia.
During the finals two of the players rivaled to get highest score, but Kabir once again preaches team spirit, and how they should play on the field. On the final match the team plays as suggested by the coach leading to a tie with Australia.
With the shootout, India misses the first two shots, while Australia scores both. Tension rises. India’s keeper manages to save all of the following Australian shots leading to India's victory.
Production
Shahrukh Khan is seen sporting a beard in the film. Shahrukh plays a man who has faced severe humiliation and is looking for an opportunity to redeem his lost glory. The team arrives in Australia to play for the women's World Cup and that is when their struggle begins for dignity and self respect.
Neetu Chandra auditioned and got the part of the leading lady of the film. She was later replaced for unknown reasons. [citation needed]
The film, produced by Yash Chopra, has the duo, Salim and Sulaiman composing the music. The music of the film is said to be in sync with the film. Editing was handled by Amin himself who previously worked as an editor before venturing into direction. The cinematography was by Vishal Sinha who previously worked with Amin in "Ab Tak Chappan". The girls are being put through a rigorous exercise regime and all their activities are being shot to be later telecasted in a reality show format playing a part in the film's promotion later on.[citation needed] To promote the film later on, Aditya Chopra, the producer of the film shot a few behind the scenes segments to be used as teasers during film promotions. Shooting for these scenes took place at Yash Raj Studios during the month of June 2006 [3].
Much of the film is shot at several locations in Australia including Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane [4]. Yash Raj Films had previously shot "Salaam Namaste" in Australia. The first schedule of the film has been shot at studios in Mumbai, India. The team of the film later headed to Australia for the second schedule of the film [5]. Yash Raj Films released the film on 10 August, 2007 [6]. The first trailer for the film was released on 15 June, 2007 with the release of "Jhoom Barabar Jhoom". Later on, the promo trailer shown with "Jhoom Barabar Jhoom" was pulled because of a lukewarm response.

Response
Reviews
The reviews have been mostly positive. While most of the critics gave the movie a thumbs up with a 4 and above rating there were a few exceptions. Moviewalah.com gave the film 2.5 out of 5 stars, the review praised Khan's performance but criticised the pace of the film. [citation needed] Rediff.com considered the movie "a good ride" giving it 3.5/5. Chak De India has been put on the list of Academy Award contenders along with Eklavya: The Royal Guard and Dharm. [7]
Box office
"Chak De India" had an average opening, lower in single-screen theatres but higher in multiplexes. With positive feedback from the public, the collections for the movie picked up over the weekend and reached the highest level on 15 August, Indian Independence Day and remained rock steady henceforth. As of October 13, the movie has collected Rs 63,28,00,000 and has been declared all time blockbuster.[8] The movie crossed the 60-crore net mark in the seventh week. The domestic net of gross collections of "Chak De India" has been boosted with the help of tax exemptions[citation needed] since week 3. As of week 8, Chak De India has surpassed the net of gross collections of Guru and Partner, and is declared the biggest blockbuster of 2007 in Bollywood after another Shah Rukh Khan movie, Om Shanti Om.[9]
Overseas, the film had picked up from the second week U.S. "Chak De" opened at number 20 in its opening weekend and collected US$351,887. It debuted the UK charts at number 11 and in its opening weekend collected £126,812. [10] This was relatively poor compared to other films released by the production house. The film has fared better in Australia, debuting at number 12 and collecting A$112,402. [11]Shah Rukh bagged the award for Best Actor for his powerful portrayal of hockey coach, Kabir Khan, in Yash Raj Film’s Chak De India. The movie also bagged the awards for Best Film (Gold) and director Shimit Amin bagged two awards for Best Director (Silver) and Best Editing.
