Abingdon is an unincorporated community in Harford County, Maryland, 25 miles northeast of Baltimore, near the Bush River. The population was 23,511 as of the 2000 census.

Schools

Since it is located in Harford County, the community of Abingdon is served by the Harford County Public Schools. Most students in Abingdon up to and including sixth grade attend William S. James Elementary School or Abingdon Elementary School. Some of these students at James Elementary will attend Edgewood Middle School, and then Edgewood High School, while the remainder will attend Patterson Mill Middle/High School. In addition, all of the students at Abingdon Elementary move up to Edgewood High School, as well. A third elementary school, William Paca/Old Post Road Elementary, is on the border between Abingdon and Edgewood, and those students also attend the Edgewood schools.

History

Abingdon was named after Abingdon, England. The town is the birthplace of William Paca, a signer of the Declaration of Independence and the third Governor of Maryland.

Location

Abingdon is located along several major roadways through Harford County. Interstate 95 runs through part of Abingdon in an northeast-to-southwest direction, though it is aligned north and south, and Maryland Route 24 runs north and south through it, connecting Edgewood to the south with Bel Air to the north. Maryland Route 924, the former alignment of Route 24, parallels that more major route for a time in the northern part of Abingdon.
