Brilliant prose

Hey Jonny-mt, I was just looking over your RfA, and from there, linked to your CSD page. (Not sure why I just bluelinked that, I'm sure you know where it is.) Anyway, I found it to be, well, brilliant. One of the best "why was my page deleted" pages I've ever seen. Did you write and format that yourself from scratch? Keeper | 76 | Disclaimer 14:46, 20 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Oh wow, thanks! That's quite a compliment!
To answer your questions, I "stole" the formatting from my own user page, which I in turn adapted from someone else's user page (although I can't for the life of me remember whose page it was). The content I wrote myself, based on the kind of questions and reactions I was getting from new users and the kind of explanations I thought they'd find useful. I also figured that a little personality and humor goes a long way in making policies and guidelines more palatable to someone who is confused as to why their page was deleted and probably a little pissed off to boot--not everyone agrees, but I think it works.
I'm glad you like it--feel free to link to it/improve it/what have you! --jonny-mt 15:07, 20 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I liked it. It's brilliantly written, easy to follow, not condescending. I'm stealing it and rewriting it a bit to say, in effect, "yes it was me who deleted your HORRIBLE page. Mwahahahaha!!!". Joking of course. about the "...mwahaha", not about the stealing. I am taking it. And I'm happy to support your RfA. Keeper | 76 | Disclaimer 15:41, 20 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Well, then, I might just have to steal the edited version back when you're done....
Thanks for the support! --jonny-mt 17:37, 20 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Jonny

I've just gave you support for your RFA and it looks likely to pass. I also an a Special:newpages checker. I new articles as stubs if they're okay. Good luck with the tools. BuickCenturyDriver (talk) 18:17, 22 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Looks like your nom is going to be closed successfully today. Good luck. BuickCenturyDriver (talk) 01:29, 27 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Here's hoping! I'm sorry I haven't responded yet - I was planning on waiting until it closed to thank everyone at once. But thank you very much for your support, and I'll be counting on your good newpage work in the future! --jonny-mt 01:37, 27 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Toe Cracking

Hey I just noticed that you said you can crack your right big toe at will. Guess what? I can too![citation needed]. Just thought I'd share that interesting fact with you. Btw, good luck with your RfA. Joelster (talk) 22:02, 22 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

WikiProject Hawaii Newsletter

Hi Jonny, I would like to wish you good luck on your RfA, and if you're not too busy, I would like to ask you some questions (brief answers are fine). These answers were pretty much thought out by Viriditas... anyway, here goes:
1. So, as you know, WikiProject Hawaiʻi has a section on its talk page regarding disputes. How do you think we should solve the current eight topics regarding some of our highest priority articles?

  • A: Given that the section of the WP Hawaiʻi talk page dedicated to disputes was last updated in August 2007, I think the first thing to do it take a look at the issues with fresh eyes. We have a number of new editors to the project and a number of old editors who have gained more experience in the past six or so months, and I think that if we take it one issue at a time we have a good chance of settling at least half or so of the eight outstanding issues with minimum fuss just by going back and reexamining the issues.
Naturally, some of the more tricky ones may require dispute resolution or discussions on the new NPOV noticeboard, but I think that a bit of patience can go a long way.

2. WikiProject Hawaiʻi also has its own portal, The Hawaiʻi Portal. What plans do you have currently to better the Hawaiʻi Portal?

  • A: When I first started working on the portal, my goal was to tie up all the loose ends and make it easy for others to contribute content. I think we're at that point now, and so the current focus should be on adding new featured biographies, anniversaries, quotes, and ʻŌlelo. There's also been discussion of revamping the portal to give it a bit of a nicer look--I certainly wouldn't mind, but it definitely takes a back seat to adding new content.

3. What do you believe are the steps necessary to make our portal gain featured portal status?

  • A: I honestly think that if we can get enough content on the portal, it should be no problem to breeze through the rest of the criteria and get the portal up to featured status. The only other really major factor holding back P:HI is the fact that it is largely self-referential in that it encourages user contributions--naturally, once we get enough contributions that problem should pretty much take care of itself :)

4. If you gain administrator privileges (it has a really bright outlook so far, and congrats), then how would you use your administrator privileges to better WikiProject Hawaiʻi?

  • A: Viriditas has already answered this question for me below--even as an admin, I would still simply be another editor when it comes to article writing.

Sorry to take so long to answer the questions! --jonny-mt 17:13, 26 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for doing this. We plan to launch this on the first of April, and you will be one of the first to receive a copy of our newsletter! (or... you can just visit it here). Thank you! –The Obento Musubi (Contributions) 08:55, 23 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Important clarification: There seems to have been a slight misunderstanding and I have asked User:The Obento Musubi to strike out question number four.[1] I have never discussed the use of administrator tools by Jonny (or anyone else) to "better" a WikiProject, and the use of tools by an involved admin (Jonny is a member of the project) is obviously not acceptable, especially in the context of question number one which makes the question even more of a problem. I'm not sure why Obento has associated me with this question, as it is something I would never even propose, so I would ask that you ignore the question as even posing it is problematic. Questions one and two have already been answered by Jonny on various talk pages, which is why I asked them in the first place, although my wording is somewhat clearer. I wrote the original proposal on Obento's talk page. This is as it appeared:
Interview with Jonny-mt: A new member of the project who has actively worked on article development (Papakolea Beach) and the most difficult aspect of the project - dispute resolution. We want to briefly ask Jonny how the project should deal with WikiProject Hawaii disputes currently disrupting eight of our articles, most of which are priority topics. Also ask Jonny about the Hawaii Portal, his plans for it, and what we need to do to get it up to featured status.[2]
I asked these questions because Jonny has already answered these questions, both on the project talk page and on various user and article talk pages. I want him to repeat himself for the newsletter. Question number one (as I originally phrased it above) concerns current disputes faced by WikiProject Hawaii. Jonny has previously suggested using various noticeboards and DR to address the problem, but I wanted to hear him repeat himself for the newsletter. Jonny addressed question number two and three on the project talk page, saying: I was hoping to have another couple of standardized items in place before asking for help, but now seems as good a time as any to expand the content. So, to that end, I'd be greatly appreciative if people could help flesh out the following areas: Selected anniversaries (current month); Selected biographies; ʻŌlelo; Quotes. Finally, to clear up any confusion, we are not launching on the "first of April", as that is April Fool's Day; I have proposed publishing the newsletter on March 30th, which will give us plenty of time to both finish it and avoid the stigma of publishing on a holiday known for Wikipedia jokes and vandalism; We certainly don't want the first issue of the newsletter to come off as a joke. I hope this clears up any problems. —Viriditas | Talk 03:49, 25 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, I thought the questions were sort of extensions of my RfA; I didn't realize this was an interview for the newsletter! Sorry for being so tardy to respond--as you can probably tell from my contributions for the last days, I've only had bits and spurts of time to edit Wikipedia. Hopefully I'll be able to respond either tonight or tomorrow.
And thanks, Viriditas, for the clarification. Truth be told, I was already planning on answering "nothing" (with the added caveat that my potential status as an administrator may make me a little more familiar with the relevant processes), but you pretty much took the words right out of my mouth :) --jonny-mt 05:16, 25 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

re: Thanks for your help!

I had originally thought the lead paragraph in the section could go without footnotes, which come below, but began to see that, at first glance, it does look like OR. For similar reasons, I like your moving one of the notes up in the PS3 section. Barte (talk) 14:40, 25 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Re:screwy vote

Hi Jonny-mt, thanks for that. I guess we edit-conflicted. The closure was long overdue (three and a half hours late) so the !votes shouldn't have been added, but that's the fault of the bureaucrats (all twelve of us) who didn't get there in time. Cheers for your note. The Rambling Man (talk) 08:39, 27 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Nice work! Was there ever any doubt? Now, wipe that silly grin off your face, being a adniminz is serius biznes. There are backlogs everywhere, new users needin help, someone just puked all over the date template, ANI has three new sockfarm threads to address, and I'm sure there are at least 50 Eastern Europe articles that need some page protectin' ....just don't do this. Hi. You denied blocking of this username [3], but it looks like they have edited an article with that exact title to include what I feel is non-encyclopedic content (admission prices and URL), so would you take another gander and tell me if you agree with my assessment? Thanks. ArcAngel (talk) 18:44, 28 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the heads-up. As you can tell, I wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt by assuming that they either like the museum or thought that the name was amusing--this is why a lot of users wait to report promotional names until they make clear their intentions by editing. But given that edit, I think it's safe to say the name is being used for promotion. I'll go ahead and block them; keep up the good work! --jonny-mt 18:50, 28 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Please help delete my account

Could you please assist me in deleting my account, and all vestiges? I have tried now several times, but cannot seem to be able to do it. Although I have blanked the contents, and tried chaging its name, it always reverts, and new, rather insidious material keeps appearing. If you read my "talk" page, you will see where I have reached in my exasperation. All of this seems to be an aftermath to my having been the nominator in an (unsuccessful) article deletion discussion. You seem to have assisted another victim of the aftermath of this, user: Proscience in deleting his account, so it is clearly doable. Could you please provide me some similar assistance? (You are the third administrator I am turning to for this. The other two did not seem able to offer any useful help.) Many thanks. R_Physicist (talk) 06:58, 29 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

As a user in good standing, you have a right to vanish, but we can't actually delete your account and contributions (partly for technical reasons, partly for licensing reasons). Some users take this farther than others--one user recently replaced all mentions of their name with "Vanished user". While I would much prefer (and personally recommend) that you simply take a Wikibreak, cool down, and come back with a clear head, if you are serious about vanishing then you can request deletion of your userspace pages either by putting {{db-userreq}} on the individual pages or by indicating what content you'd like deleted here or via e-mail. What you do next is up to you--if you want to continue editing Wikipedia under another name, you are welcome to do so provided that you completely abandon your current account (see WP:SOCK for information on multiple accounts).
Once again, I encourage you to take a breather and think about this a little longer, but if you're serious then I'll do what I can to help out. --jonny-mt 07:42, 29 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Thanks, but I really would like to delete my account, and the talk page. I have said all that I wanted to say and those interested will have read it. I see no reason for maintaining a permanent record of it here. (The issues at stake will be pursued, if at all, in another forum.) I would appreciate your help in deleting everything that went under "R Physcist". Many thanks. R_Physicist (talk) 21:27, 29 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I've gone ahead and deleted your talk page per your request here, citing your right to vanish in the deletion log. Once again, we can't actually delete your account, but as part of your right to vanish you can simply stop using it, scramble your password, or do whatever you will to not edit under the same name. The best of luck to you. --jonny-mt 13:19, 30 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Thanks, I understand that you cannot delete the account, but it seems as if the discussion page still exists, and people can still write to it. Can it not just be eliminated altogether, or, e.g., have its name changed, and "frozen" in some way, so that people cannot add to it, or try to contact me through it? Sorry to persist in this, but it does seem as if it is still an active page, using a name that I invented, and hence is a potential target for further abuse that I would rather see removed. I thought this was what was done in the case of user: Proscience, where no talk page exists any more. R_Physicist (talk) 17:24, 30 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I'm a little confused now--I deleted your talk page per your request (you can see the deletion log here), which is the same thing I did for Proscience. While people can, in theory, start a new talk page there, I (and, I imagine, several other admins) have the page watchlisted, and so we'll be able to respond promptly to any abuse. I see no need to protect the page against creation now, although if it becomes a target for abuse or vandalism then it's a fairly easy thing to do. --jonny-mt 17:31, 30 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

AfD from 3/23 ready for closure

See here. Vast majority of keep votes were made by sockpuppets. I struck them, leaving only the comments of the sockpuppeteer. Seems like a clear Delete to me. Enigma message 02:59, 31 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the heads-up; I've closed the debate as delete. Out of sheer curiousity, is there any particular reason why you brought this to me personally? If I'm on some list somewhere of admins willing to close contentious AfDs, I'd like to know now :P --jonny-mt 05:01, 31 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I don't think it was so contentious now that the sockpuppets were blocked. Pretty open-and-shut, except for one guy deciding to vote 5 times or whatever. I came to you because once the issue at WP:SSP was resolved, I figured it should be closed. I looked at the AfDs around the same time, and you had been closing them. It was the logical step for me. Thanks for giving it the attention it deserved. Enigma message 05:13, 31 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Old disputes

Given that the section of the WP Hawaiʻi talk page dedicated to disputes was last updated in August 2007, I think the first thing to do it take a look at the issues with fresh eyes.

With regard to Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Hawaii#Current_disputes, I'm taking you up on that offer, Jonny. :) No hurry on this, but it would be nice to see a re-evaluation of the status of dispute tags on the following eight articles:
  1. Talk:Apology Resolution#Dispute
  2. Talk:Evan Dobelle#Dispute
  3. Talk:Hawaii#Dispute
  4. Talk:Kingdom of Hawaii#Dispute
  5. Talk:Legal status of Hawaii#Dispute
  6. Talk:Liliuokalani#Dispute
  7. Talk:Morgan Report#Dispute
  8. Talk:Overthrow of the Hawaiian monarchy#Dispute
Although it isn't listed, I've also started a rewrite of Hawaiian sovereignty movement at Talk:Hawaiian sovereignty movement/Temp due to the ongoing dispute on that page. It should probably be added to the list. Any help you can offer is appreciated. Thanks. —Viriditas | Talk 13:14, 31 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Oh noes, disputes! Actually, that sounds like a great idea--I wasn't around when most of these disputes were happening, so I'd be glad to give them a look over the next month or so and see if we can't figure something out. Don't think I'll be able to solve them single-handedly or anything, but I'll do what I can :) --jonny-mt 09:27, 3 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Jonny, we're up to five incidents now. I don't want to jump the gun, so I'm wondering at what point I should make another request. Please let me know. Thanks. f(x)=ax2+bx+c 05:52, 1 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

That'll do it right there; I've semi-protected the page for 31 hours to account for any stragglers. As a rule of thumb, protection is a last resort reserved for when vandalism or other disruption hinders the natural development of the article--I held off on denying the protection for a while to see if it was going to be a problem, but it looks like I was the one jumping the gun instead. Thanks for the heads-up :) --jonny-mt 06:01, 1 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
No problem. Thanks for taking care of it :) f(x)=ax2+bx+c 06:03, 1 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello - when you relist AFDs, could you please make sure to remove them from their original page and paste them on today's page? Thanks, Sarcasticidealist (talk) 04:37, 2 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I was wondering; I've asked more a few people to do the same thing myself :P Regardless, I appreciate the reminder! --jonny-mt 05:13, 2 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Lava Studios

Double sorry, didn't pick up on your decline, and also failed to give a reason. I deleted because

  1. very short article without substantive content
  2. no assertion of notability (no refs, no link to Kirkpatrick - name meant nothing to me)
  3. not sure why being owned by someone notable makes it notable - on that basis you could have an article about his dog or car
  4. At best, if this article exists at all, it should just be as a redirect to Kirkpatrick
  5. for what it's worth, I would have speedied the other two on sight as nn bios, even if the second one had not been a hoax.

Heh, no worries. I've got most of those pages watchlisted as a matter of course, so I picked up that you had reverted the majority and simply removed an extra one that you missed. Thanks for the help getting the latest sock! --jonny-mt 04:59, 3 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for blocking the user. But I do think that it still would be pertinant to protect my user page and talk page. Otherwise they may come back with socks, which would be undisireable. Doctor Will Thompson (talk) 09:04, 3 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

No problem; I blocked him with autoblock enabled, though, which means that it something hasn't happened yet, it's not particularly likely to. If something does flare up, feel free to post a request to WP:RFPP, note that you suspect socks of the blocked user (tell them to look at the deleted history on your user page for confirmation), and even post a link to this discussion if you'd like and I'm sure it will get taken care of. --jonny-mt 09:14, 3 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Okay I will do that, if it does flare up again. Did you take a look at User:James_Bushnell44's user page? He was an admin, any idea who is trying to stir up trouble in Wikipedia? Doctor Will Thompson (talk) 09:43, 3 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
