McQuaid Jesuit High School is an all-male, Jesuit college preparatory high school located in Rochester, New York, USA. Named after Bernard J. McQuaid, the first bishop of the Rochester diocese, McQuaid is located at 1800 Clinton Avenue South, in the suburb of Brighton.

McQuaid was founded in 1954 in downtown Rochester, with its first class containing 129 students. In 1955 it moved to its current site, and it currently educates around 900 young men in grades 7-12.

McQuaid Jesuit is widely recognized for above-average academic and athletic performance among its students. It recently added on a new field house containing a new gymnasium, weight rooms, and classrooms.

Curriculum

Every student at McQuaid Jesuit is involved in a rigorous college preparatory curriculum. Honors and Advanced Placement sections exist in each of the curricular disciplines. Admissions are based on grades and an entrance exam, among other criteria.

Because of its academic rigor, and the fact that its diploma requirements exceed those of the state of New York, McQuaid Jesuit is one of only four Western New York schools exempt from New York State's Regents Examinations.

Athletics

McQuaid has taken part in the sectional and state tournaments of the New York State Public High School Athletic Association since 1978, and has won 52 sectional championships since. The school has also won 9 state titles, along with numerous New York State Western Regional championships. In the fall season, McQuaid offers football, volleyball, soccer, crew, and cross country. In the winter season it offers wrestling, basketball, indoor track, hockey, skiing, crew and swimming. In spring season, McQuaid offers baseball, golf, lacrosse, rugby, crew, and track & field. The sailing team competes in both the fall and winter seasons.

A new field house was completed in fall 2007, as part of a broader plan to improve athletic facilities. This initiative increased the capacity of the gym and renovated the locker rooms, weight room, and physical education offices. An aerobic room and three court gym were added with equipment storage for McQuaid athletic teams.

Jeff Van Gundy, former head coach of the Houston Rockets and New York Knicks of the National Basketball Association, began his coaching career at McQuaid, coaching the McQuaid men's basketball team for one season (1985–1986).

McQuaid Knights hockey, soccer, track, volleyball and golf teams all have done extremely well in past years having won state and sectional titles. Typically at least 100 students come to try out for the teams each year. They have numerous Section V championships with a few state championships. Tomarris Bell '09 ranked nationally in the high jump for McQuaid. McQuaid is also known for their cheering section, called the "Simba Society". The biggest crowds are found at Aquinas Institute contests, one of McQuaid's major rivals (with Rochester East H.S.). McQuaid is known for the sheer amount of cheering, and the content of the cheering. They've set records for attendance at Section V events. The McQuaid Jesuit Tailgating Society hosts tailgates before sporting events. Tailgating is most popular for hockey games.

McQuaid has many other sports, including crew (a real atheltic sport and hard to do) and rugby. In the 2008 New York State Championships, the crew team took first in the novice four,, second in the lightweight four, and third in the freshman four. For the first time, they received medals at the Canadian Nationals with a second in both the junior four and senior 66kg four. The lightweight four also finished 5th, 1.3 seconds behind the bronze, at the Scholastic Nationals. The team ranked in the top 10 in the nation with its 7th place finish in the USRowing Youth Nationals in the Mens Lightweight 4. Despite all of these accomplishments, still, everyone at McQuaid cares about the crew team, and actually quite likes all of the people involved in crew. The rugby squad (the Rebel Knights) won the New York State High School Rugby Championship from 2003-2007. The lacrosse team, commonly referred to as the GRALL Dynasty, has won every Greater Rochester Area Lacrosse League championship since the leagues founding in 2004.

The McQuaid Invitational is one of the biggest high school Cross Country meets in the nation. The meet takes place in Genessee Valley Park in Rochester, New York and hosts thousands of runners every year in twenty-four different races. The meet falls on the fourth Saturday after Labor Day every year.
