Maximum Ride is a science fiction/fantasy series written by the award-winning American author, James Patterson, starting from April 19, 2005 and continuing to the present. There are currently four titles in the action-adventure series, with a fifth scheduled for release on March 16, 2009:
- The Angel Experiment
- School's Out - Forever
- Saving the World and Other Extreme Sports
- The Final Warning
- Water Wings: A Maximum Ride Novel
Each of the novels in the series has reached #1 on the New York Times Best Seller list.[4]
Premise
The plot follows the adventures of Maximum Ride, more widely known as Max, and her group of human-avian hybrids (known as the Flock), who have been the subjects of experiments[5] leaving them 98% human and 2% bird.[6] The experiments were conducted at a facility known as "The School", located in Death Valley, California. The flock is constantly being hunted down by Erasers, human-lupine (wolf) hybrids, that were also created at the School. The Flock works towards protecting the world from domination by mysterious figures, who have also shown an interest in their capture. However, the most recent republishing of the books have featured two different series names: The Fugitives and The Protectors. Perhaps that would explain why books four and five feature a different overall goal and plot than past books.

[9]
Film
In January 2007 it was announced that a film would be created based on the Maximum Ride series. The producer will be Avi Arad, one of the producers of Spider-Man, X-Men and other Marvel movies. [10] In an interview with James Patterson, it was revealed Arad has already planned out the first two movies.[11] On August 7, 2008, it was announced that Columbia Pictures bought the screen rights to the franchise, and that Don Payne would write the screenplay. [12] The release date of the movie is 2010. It has been announced that Jimmy "Jax" Pinchak will be playing Gazzy. And that Amy Rose will play Max, is not official. [13]
