"Poker Face"
Song

"Poker Face" is an electropop song by American pop singer-songwriter Lady Gaga from her debut album, The Fame. Produced by RedOne, it was released as the album's second single. The song topped the charts in 12 countries so far, making it even more successful than her debut single, "Just Dance". In addition it has reached the top ten in many other countries including her native USA, where it has so far peaked at #6 on the Billboard Hot 100 and topping the dance charts, thereby making it Gaga's second U.S. top ten hit.[2][3] Along with her former chart topper in the 7th position the same week, Lady Gaga became the first debut artist to place her two debut singles simultaneously in the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100

Critical reception

The song has received positive reviews from critics. Daniel Incognito of Sputnikmusic reviewed the song saying "Poker Face shares the rest of the album's (The Fame) lively personality – the synths being anything but level. The vocal texture in the breakdown takes an eccentric turn, but strangely has a nice alluring quality to it".[4]

The Times in a review for The Fame said that "Poker Face" was one of the finest moments of the album with its love-as-card-game cheek.[5]

BBC reviewed the "strut-tastic" single as "expressing her overwhelming desire for celebrity and fortune."[6]

Nick Levine, music editor of Digitalspy also praised the single saying "'Poker Face', one of the best tracks here, (The Fame) features both passable innuendo ("I wanna roll with him, a hard pair we will be") and childish, half-arsed nonsense ("I'm bluffin' with my muffin")." [7]

Billboard also gave a positive review of the song saying "Once again, hooks are aplenty, with '80s-inspired synthesizers, robotic verses and a warm, sunny hook in the chorus, which is even more addictive than the previous single (Just Dance)...With a focused artistic vision, a swagger in her interview style and above all, a fantastic collection of diverse pop nuggets, GaGa is playing her cards right—and "Poker" is another obvious ace."[8]

Chart performance

In the U.S., the song debuted on the Bubbling Under Hot 100 chart on the week of October 18, 2008 at number 25.[9] On the week of January 3, 2009, the single entered the Billboard Hot 100 at 92[10] and has since reached a peak of 6 for the issue dated March 7, 2009.[11] The song also debuted on the Pop 100 at number 61 and moved to a peak of 9.[12] The song also peaked the Hot Dance Airplay chart for the issue date of February 7, 2009 as well as the Hot Dance Club Play chart for the issue date of February 21, 2009.[12]

Poker Face entered the Australian ARIA Charts at number 26 on the issue date of October 10, 2008[13] and in its seventh week peaked at number one replacing "Sex on Fire" by the Kings of Leon.[14] The single was replaced from the top spot in its eleventh week by Wes Carr's single "You"[15] but came back again on the top the next week.[16] The single stayed on the top for 8 weeks before being replaced by Jessica Mauboy's song "Burn" for the issue dated January 25, 2009.[17] It is the second single by Lady Gaga to top the charts in Australia, after "Just Dance" which, however, spent just one week at the summit. After 16 weeks on the chart Poker Face sold over 165,000 copies going 2xPlatinum on the ARIA Charts.[citation needed]

In Canada, the song debuted at number 41 on the Canadian Hot 100 for the issue of September 6, 2008.[18] As it began to receive more radio airplay, it reached the top ten at number eight for the issue of November 15, 2008.[19] On the chart dated December 13, 2008, Poker Face ascended to number one[20] where it spent nine non-consecutive weeks at the top (four more than "Just Dance", her first five-week chart-topper).[2] The song also managed to top the Digital Downloads chart.[21] The Hot 100 run was interrupted by Kelly Clarkson's single "My Life Would Suck Without You" on the issue of February 7, 2009,[22] but "Poker Face" came back again on the top the next week[23] before being finally replaced by Eminem's single "Crack a Bottle".[24]

In Norway, the song debuted at number 13, for the week of December 7, 2008[25] and topped the chart on the second week of January 2009, replacing Beyonce's "If I Were a Boy from the top spot.[26] The single was replaced from its top position in its 13th week on the chart by Alexander Rybak's single "Fairytale".[27]

In New Zealand, "Poker Face" debuted at number 21 on October 6, 2008.[28] In its sixth week, it topped the chart replacing "Everything" by P-Money[29]. It spent a huge ten consecutive weeks at number one and was knocked off on its 16th week in the charts by Jason Mraz's "I'm Yours".[30] 'Poker Face' spent the most weeks at number one since Crazy Frog's "Axel F" spent 11 non-consecutive weeks at number one in July - October 2005, and the most consecutive weeks at number one since UB40's song "Can't Help Falling in Love" spent 10 consecutive weeks at number one in June - August 1993.

In Finland the song entered the chart at number 19[31] and climbed to the top on the second week of January.[32] The single has topped the charts for eight weeks as of present. In Sweden, the single debuted at number 32[33] On its sixteenth week it topped the chart replacing Kevin Borg's "With Every Bit of Me" for the issue date of January 16, 2009[34] but was replaced by Kevin Borg again the next week.[35] The song has since then come back to the top twice, first replacing Kevin Borg to the top again for the issue date of January 29, 2009[36] and then replacing Kim's "3 Floors Down" for the issue of February 19, 2009.[37]

In the United Kingdom the song was initially meant to released in mid March, however due to the huge success of Just Dance the physical release of Poker Face has been delayed until April 13 2009. However, "Poker Face" debuted at number 30 on the UK Singles Chart from downloads alone on the issue of January 18, 2009.[38] The next week it rose to number 26.[39] On the issue dated February 22, 2009 the song reached the top 20 at fifteen.[40] The next week, the song moved to a peak of 3, thus giving Gaga her second UK top 10 single..[41] The single also peaked on the Billboard Eurochart Hot 100 singles chart for the issue dated March 7, 2009.[42]

Following the release of the album, the song entered the Irish Singles Chart at number 8, on downloads alone on the issue dated January 15, 2009. [43] The following week, "Poker Face" climbed to #2, the same week "Just Dance" peaked at number one. This made Lady Gaga the first artist in 24 years, to simultaneously hold both the number one, and number two chart positions. On February 27 2009, after seven weeks on the chart, the song reached #1 on downloads alone, making it her second #1 song in that country and also in the same month. [44]

The song has also peaked on both the Belgian Charts (Flanders & Wallonia)[45][46] as well as peaking on the Danish Singles Chart, where it stayed for one week[47] before being replaced by "You've Got A Friend" by the Danish X-Factor finalists[48]

In Austria the song debuted at number 8[49] and has moved to a peak of 3 for the issue dated February 27, 2009.[50] In France the single had the highest debut at number 2 for the issue of January 31, 2009[51] and reached number one on hte issue dated February 28, 2009[52]. In Switzerland the song debuted at number 59 for the issue of January 11, 2009[53] and has since reached a peak of 2 for the issue of March 1, 2009.[54]

Music video

Lady Gaga wearing a masquerade mask in the music video for "Poker Face"

The music video of "Poker Face" was directed by Ray Kay[55] and premiered on October 22, 2008. The music video takes place by a pool, as well as in a mansion. The video begins with Lady Gaga emerging out of the pool with a shiny masquerade mask. She throws the mask aside and the song begins with a facial shot of Gaga singing it. Featured in the video are scenes of Gaga in a mansion, playing strip poker with her friends, on a sofa with a man, and dancing poolside with her dancers in a turquoise leotard. The video also features two harlequin Great Danes and several white mannequins on her swimming pool deck who are supposedly playing her servants. The video also shows Gaga in her trademark Pop Culture sunglasses while sitting beside the pool. The video ends with the head shot of Gaga singing the Mum-mum-mum-ma hook. The music video premiered on UK music channels on 17 February 2009. In some versions of the song, the words "muffin" (being a slang term for the woman's vagina), "Russian Roulette," and "gun" are censored out (bleeped) by the mum-mum-mum-ma hook.
