Ashley Tisdale |
---|
Ashley Michelle Tisdale (born July 2, 1985) is an American actress, singer, and television producer. Tisdale gained her first major role as an actor in 2005 when she played the role of Maddie Fitzpatrick in Disney's The Suite Life of Zack & Cody. She went on to star in High School Musical film series as the female antagonist Sharpay Evans. She made music history by becoming the first female artist to debut with two songs simultaneously on the Billboard Hot 100 with "What I've Been Looking For" and "Bop to the Top".[2]
After her first Emmy-winning High School Musical performance, she pursued a solo music career and on February 6, 2007, she released her debut album Headstrong. The album debuted at number five on the U.S. charts, selling over 64,000 copies in the first week,[3] and was later certified Gold. Later, she continued to reprise her role as Sharpay Evans in High School Musical 2 and High School Musical 3: Senior Year. High School Musical 2 was the most-watched basic cable show on record.[4] Tisdale has a supporting role as Candace Flynn in Disney Channel's Phineas and Ferb.
Tisdale is working on her second studio album, Guilty Pleasure which is scheduled to be released in June 16, 2009.[5] Tisdale is set to star in They Came from Upstairs, which will be released in July 2009.[6]
Early life and career beginnings
Tisdale was born in Monmouth County, New Jersey on July 2, 1985,[2] to Lisa (née Morris) and Mike Tisdale, who run a construction company.[7] She grew up in Ocean Township.[8] While her elder sister, Jennifer Tisdale, is also an actress and model, her maternal grandfather, Arnold Morris, developed the Ginsu Knives; through her grandfather, she is also related to businessman Ron Popeil.[9] Tisdale is Jewish.[10][11]
At the age of three, Tisdale was discovered by Bill Perlman, her current manager, at South Shores Mall.[2] On her first audition, Tisdale landed a JC Penney spot and went on to appear in more than 100 commercials as a kid.[1] At the age of eight, she was cast in a leading role in the Broadway musical, Les Misérables, and later toured internationally with the cast of Annie.[1] She began her acting career by appearing in Gypsy: A Musical Fable and The Sound of Music at the Jewish Community Center of Monmouth County.[12][1] At age twelve, Tisdale sang for American President Bill Clinton in the White House.[1]
Tisdale was a Ford Model.[13] During the late 1990s and early 2000s, Tisdale made minor appearances on several television series such as George Lopez, Smart Guy, 7th Heaven, Strong Medicine and Bette, where she co-starred with Brenda Song for the first time. For her role in Boston Public she received a 2000 Young Artist Award nomination for "best guest performance in a TV drama".[14] Tisdale had a voice role in the 1998 animated movie A Bug's Life, and a minor role in the 2001 film Donnie Darko. She had recurring roles on sitcoms with The Hughleys in 2002 and Still Standing in 2003.[1]
Recording and film career
2004-2006: Fame rise and career development
In 2004, Tisdale was cast the role of Maddie Fitzpatrick on The Suite Life of Zack & Cody after auditioning for the roles of Maddie Fitzpatrick and London Tipton.[15] While doing the show, she also appeared in Whisper of the Heart, the English-language version of the Japanese animated feature, Mimi wo Sumaseba.
Tisdale was soon cast as Sharpay Evans in Disney Channel Original Movie High School Musical. Tisdale's role required her to perform several songs on the soundtrack. All the songs charted on the Billboard Hot 100.[16] Tisdale made music history by becoming the first female artist ever to debut with two songs simultaneously on the "Hot 100" with "What I've Been Looking For" and "Bop to the Top".[2] The soundtrack became the top-selling album of 2006. Tisdale also made an appearance in the Disney Channel Games 2006.
In 2006, Tisdale signed a record deal with Warner Bros. Records. The same year, she covered Wham!'s "Last Christmas", which was the first single in her deal with Warner Bros. She also recorded a version of "Some Day My Prince Will Come" with Drew Seeley for DisneyMania 4 and a version of "A Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makes" with other members of the Disney Channel Circle of Stars. She was featured on the music video which was later included on Cinderella: Platinum Edition DVD. Tisdale also recorded a cover version of the song "Kiss the Girl" and shot a music video, which premiered on Disney Channel and was later included on The Little Mermaid: Platinum Edition DVD. In December 2006, prior to the release of her debut album, she released a three-song EP, He Said She Said EP to promote the album. Tisdale also launched a tour with the cast of High School Musical, performing songs from the soundtrack and songs from her debut album. In 2007, a DVD and a live album called High School Musical: The Concert was released featuring Tisdale's songs.
2007-2008: Headstrong and acting roles
In February 2007, Tisdale released her first solo album, Headstrong which was distributed by Warner Bros Records.[17] The album debuted at number five on the Billboard 200 album charts, selling 64,000 copies.[17] Tisdale described Headstrong as a chance for her fans to get to know her better. "I want people to know that I’m a real person, and that I’ve been through normal situations, like crushes and heartbreaks.", said Tisdale. She also admitted that the album was called Headstrong because she is a pretty headstrong type of person.[18]
She reprised her role as Sharpay Evans in High School Musical 2. She also appeared on the soundtrack. Tisdale has a voice role in Disney Channel's Phineas and Ferb as Candace Flynn. She also voiced Camille Leon in Kim Possible. Tisdale received her first award at Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards UK as "Best TV Actress" for The Suite Life of Zack & Cody. In 2007, Tisdale released a music DVD, There's Something About Ashley, with a three-song trilogy comprising music videos and a documentary about the creation of Headstrong. The album was re-released in 2007 in a Holiday Edition.[19] The album was re-released again in a limited Deluxe Edition format in Germany.[20] The album was certified Gold in the U.S. for reaching 500,000 copies shipped,[3] and Billboard readers chose it as the sixth best album of the year.[21]
In 2008, Tisdale was starred in the ABC Family Original Movie, Picture This. The movie was released on DVD in 2008. In addition, Tisdale was credited as one of the executive producers for the movie.[22] Later that year, Tisdale reprised her role as Sharpay Evans in High School Musical 3: Senior Year and also sang songs on the the soundtrack. Tisdale sang the leading vocals in the song, "I Want It All", which received praises from Billboard. [23]
2009-present: Guilty Pleasure and other projects
On April 2008, she stated that she has recorded several songs for her next album.[24] Tisdale has also stated her second album will have "more rock and edgier."[25] Tommy Page has stated that he is working on Tisdale's second album.[26] In April 2009, Tisdale announced that the album's name is Guilty Pleasure and it will be "sexier" than her other album.[27] Tisdale announced that the first single is called "It's Alright, It's OK", [28] Tisdale shot a music video for the song which will be released in the third week of April.[29] The album will be released in June 16, 2009. [5]
Tisdale will appear in the 20th Century Fox's adventure comedy, They Came From Upstairs alongside Robert Hoffman and Carter Jenkins. Tisdale portrays Bethany Pearson and the film was shot in Auckland, New Zealand. In 2009, she guest starred as Maddie Fitzpatrick on The Suite Life on Deck. Tisdale is also starting to produce.[30] She has a production company, Blondie Girl Productions and is working in two projects.[30] She is the first actress from Disney Channel to executive-produce one of their shows. [30] On Live with Regis & Kelly, she stated that she is currently working on a Disney Channel series based on her early life working in a mall. Tisdale also signed a deal with FremantleMedia to produce a reality show.[31] She also left Gersh Agency and joined Creative Artists Agency.[32] Tisdale has collaborated with Jessica Horowitz to create a animated series, After Midnight which is currently being shopped around for distribution.[33]
Music influences

Template:Sample box end Tisdale has a mezzo-soprano voice style.[1] Her music is predominantly considered teen pop, but has also included genres of dance-pop, ballads and contemporary R&B. She stated that she will move to a pop rock style for her second album, which is different from her usual genre. [25] Tisdale has co-written four songs in her debut album, which include "Not Like That" and "Suddenly".[34][35] She has co-written three tracks on her second album.[36]
Her musical influences include Mariah Carey, Elton John, Christina Aguilera, Britney Spears and many '80 songs.[1][37] In a AOL.com interview, Tisdale stated, "I’ve been a big fan of P!nk ever since she started. I love Katy’s sense of humor and her pop/rock feel. -- I love Pat Benatar's music. I’m inspired by all these women when I’m going into the studio, but almost anything inspires me."[38]
Products and endorsement
In October 2007, Tisdale signed a promotional deal for the Eckō Red clothing brand in which she toured malls across the U.S. Tisdale functioned as spokesperson and performed in conjunction with fashion shows hosted at each mall.[39] In 2008, Tisdale teamed up with Huckleberry Toys to produce a limited edition of dolls modelled after herself. The dolls were manufactured by Huckleberry Toys and featured outfits from her music videos, "He Said She Said", "Not Like That" and "Suddenly".[40] She also appeared in commercials for Toys "R" Us, T-Mobile, and appeared in one promotional campaign for Staples, Inc.'s "Geared 4 School" sweepstakes.[41][42]
She was the face for Degree Girl in the United States and recorded multiple commercials to promote the product. She covered several popular '80s songs to promote the product.[43] In 2009, Tisdale signed a five-year contract with Italian clothes line Puerco Espin to be their new face. This project will be launched on March 22, in Milan, and she's going to perform at the show. Tisdale is also going to be the cover of "PE Magazine".[44]
Public image and personal life
Tisdale underwent a rhinoplasty procedure on November 30, 2007. According to Tisdale, this was done for health-related reasons and not out of a belief in plastic surgery; her "septum was 80 percent deviated" and she had "two small fractures on [her] nose", and this was interfering with her breathing. She spoke to People magazine about the surgery, saying that it was important to her to be honest with her fans.[45]
In January 2007, Blender magazine stated, "Tisdale has a gift. Not an angelic voice or a dazzling personality, but an even rarer commodity: millions of "pre-sold" tweens eager to buy her debut album!".[46] In an interview with People, Tisdale confirmed that she had been dating Jared Murillo since March 2007.[47] In March 2007, Tisdale told Blender that she was drug and alcohol-free, and doesn't smoke and went on to add, "my mom really instilled confidence in me, so I'm not somebody who'd be under peer pressure".[48] She was ranked #10 in Maxim's 2008 Hot 100 list.[49] In June 2008, Tisdale was ranked at #94 on Forbes' Celebrity 100 list.[50] Tisdale has appeared on the magazine covers of Seventeen, CosmoGirl!, Cosmopolitan, Shape and several other magazines. Tisdale is cited several times in David Denby's book Snark. [51]
In 2007, she was named one of Teen People's "25 Hottest Stars Under 25."[13] Teen Vogue included Tisdale in their October 2008 Ten Best Dressed list.[52] Tisdale was ranked #6 in Forbes Hollywood's 10 Top-Paid Tweens list.[53] Tisdale earned $2.8 million from High School Musical 3.[54] In 2008, Tisdale was ranked #17 in the list of Forbes "High Earners Under 30",[55] and was considered by Us Weekly as one of the best-dressed celebrities.[56]
