Kevin McKidd (born 9 August 1973) is a Scottish television and film actor. He is known for his prominent television roles, including his performances as Lucius Vorenus on Rome, as Dan Vasser on Journeyman, and as Dr. Owen Hunt on Grey's Anatomy.

He has also appeared in films such as Trainspotting, Kingdom of Heaven, The Last Legion, Hannibal Rising, and the starring role in the cult British horror film Dog Soldiers.

McKidd has done voice work and voiced the character of Jezz Torrent, flame haired lead singer of the fictional Scottish hard rock band Love Fist in the video games Grand Theft Auto: Vice City and Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.[citation needed]

Biography

McKidd was born and raised in Elgin, Moray, Scotland, where he attended Seafield Primary School and Elgin Academy. He was a member of the local acting group the Moray Youth Theatre. Planning to study engineering he attended the University of Edinburgh but dropped out and instead enrolled at Queen Margaret College in Edinburgh to study drama. He also joined Edinburgh University's student theatre company, Bedlam Theatre.

McKidd's first professional role was in the television series Father Ted, where he played Father Deegan in the 1996 episode "A Christmassy Ted". Subsequent roles include Tommy in Trainspotting and Malky Johnson in Small Faces. In 2004, he played James Hepburn, 4th Earl of Bothwell, the third husband of Mary, Queen of Scots, in the BBC mini-series Gunpowder, Treason & Plot.

He appeared in Ridley Scott's Kingdom of Heaven, the 2002 film adaptation of Nicholas Nickleby and was also the voice of Jezz Torrent in GTA: Vice City. In Neil Marshall's horror film, Dog Soldiers, he appeared as Pvt. Cooper. In the 2005 BBC drama, The Virgin Queen, he played Thomas Howard, 4th Duke of Norfolk.

In 1998, McKidd was in the 4-part BBC2 series Looking After Jo Jo, playing the role of Basil. He was also one of the stars of the joint HBO/BBC series Rome, where his portrayal of the soldier/politician Lucius Vorenus received critical acclaim.[citation needed]

Additional work includes his role in the Silence of the Lambs prequel Hannibal Rising (2007). In the fall of 2007, McKidd began his role as the lead character in the American science-fiction television series Journeyman on NBC.[1] However, the show suffered from low ratings and only thirteen episodes were produced.

McKidd currently appears on Grey's Anatomy as Dr. Owen Hunt. McKidd is also credited with playing a voice-over for the character "Soap" MacTavish on Infinity Ward's Modern Warfare 2.
