The Template:Greater Los Angeles Area is up for deletion. I believe it should be deleted because it includes all the cities in LA/OC as well as Ventura. It includes some of the IE cities, I think it should be deleted because its too long too may cities and also it doesent include all the cities in that metro and if added it will be WAY too long! I think it should be deleted or trimed into the LA/OC maby Ventura, since the IE has its own template and it not that long, so if its created into the LA/OC it wont be too long, and thats the way I think it should go so please visit the deletion log by using the information below:

Orphaned non-free media (File:Cal Poly San Luis Obispo Seal.png)
Thanks for uploading :File:Cal Poly San Luis Obispo Seal.png. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. ==File source problem with File:Mexican Economy.png==

Thanks for uploading :File:Mexican Economy.png. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, their copyright should also be acknowledged.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 21:29, 5 July 2009 (UTC). The article The Poly Post has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Thanks!

Thank you for the barnstar. I will display it proudly! Alanraywiki (talk) 03:49, 3 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Possibly unfree Image:Cal Poly Pomona banner.png

An image that you uploaded or altered, Image:Cal Poly Pomona banner.png, has been listed at Wikipedia:Possibly unfree images because its copyright status is unclear or disputed. If the image's copyright status cannot be verified, it may be deleted. You may find more information on the image description page. You are welcome to add comments to its entry at the discussion if you are interested in it not being deleted. Thank you. Stifle (talk) 16:07, 4 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

A CC template was added to it. Could you remove the PUI label from the picture? Please =)--Dabackgammonator (talk) 20:18, 7 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I've removed the GFDL license tag from it because you can't license a CC-derived image as GFDL, and fixed up the attribution. Stifle (talk) 20:21, 7 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sweet Jesus, that's beautiful. Keep up the good work. I would suggest, though, either removing the font color formatting override for the would-be redlinks or stripping out those links without articles altogether. At present, there's no way for a reader to tell if he or she is actually going to see an article at the other end of a link (short of a close look at his or her browser's status bar while hovering over the link). --Dynaflow babble 09:09, 8 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you Dynaflow! I will most definitely change the format of the links because you pointed out a great flaw in the design. If you want to make some changes to it... knock yourself out=)--Dabackgammonator (talk) 04:17, 9 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

A barnstar for you!

I have been meaning to award this to you ever since I saw it on the Wikiproject page. You really have done outstanding work on this article and the entire Cal Poly Pomona project. Alanraywiki (talk) 16:30, 11 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you Alanray! It really means a lot to receive something from someone as well regarded as you. I will strive even harder to maintain the character of the project!--Dabackgammonator (talk) 19:03, 11 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

References for "Noted students and alumni"

I'm mildly concerned by your referencing the "Noted students and alumni" on the Cal Poly Pomona article. For people with their own Wikipedia articles, the references would seem to appropriately belong in the article itself, not in the list. Eddy Hartenstein is the exception, since he doesn't yet have an article, and the reference establishes notability.--Curtis Clark (talk) 14:01, 18 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

If I may weigh in on Dabackgammonator's talk page, let me give you my thoughts on these references. I believe the references should be there because 1) most of the articles about the individuals do not include a reference about their college attendance, although they should, 2) including references is a best practice when you look at all the featured lists of alumni here, and 3) having too many citations is rarely a problem on Wikipedia pages. Thanks, Alanraywiki (talk) 19:16, 18 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
My concern is that if the reference adds to the article about the person, it should be there. It's more a matter of scope than of over-referencing, although by putting the reference on the Cal Poly Pomona page, it's still not apparent whether it's in the target article. But, like I say, it's a minor concern.--Curtis Clark (talk) 01:24, 19 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I moved the references to the their respective articles, so the referencing wouldn't be completely gone. I have a question to either one of you. Would the same reasoning apply if the article in question was "List of Cal Poly Pomona people"? Thanks.--Dabackgammonator (talk) 02:43, 19 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
In terms of referencing, I've seen a general best practice of placing references in the article to which they most pertain. Why have a "List of Cal Poly Pomona people"? For linking people with Wikipedia articles who are associated with Cal Poly Pomona, it seems that "Category: People associated with Cal Poly Pomona" (or something similar; check how similar categories are worded) would be more useful. If the list were to include people without Wikipedia articles, no matter how well-referenced, it might end up at AfD. See Wikipedia:Lists (stand-alone lists)#Lists of people.--Curtis Clark (talk) 13:48, 19 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
In looking at featured alumni lists (for example, List of Athabasca University people, List of Brigham Young University alumni, List of Dartmouth College alumni, and List of Georgia Institute of Technology alumni), the references are all shown on the alumni page in addition to the person's article. If we want to bring this up to featured list status in the future, either as a standalone article or part of the Cal Poly Pomona article, we will have to meet the featured list criteria, which includes verifiability. Regarding people without articles, I think that they can stay a redlink in the short term but long term there should be an article if they are actually notable. In any case, I understand the logic of your view on referencing but I am just going by past practice on featured articles. Thanks, Alanraywiki (talk) 15:56, 19 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Why did you remove explicit reference to notable faculty from the main article? They are still there in the list, but, unless I missed it, it's unclear from the article that they can be found there.--Curtis Clark (talk) 01:19, 20 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

OK, I changed the section's name from "Alumni" to "Notable faculty and alumni". I apologize for making all these changes without consulting anyone, but I'd rather do and get erased/modified than to over think it and not. By the way, if you think anything I made is wrong and should be changed, smashed, blown to pieces, please do so! (P.S. my feelings won't get hurt =P).--Dabackgammonator (talk) 07:21, 20 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Great job on the List of Cal Poly Pomona people. I wouldn't worry about consulting anyone, at least not me. Thanks, Alanraywiki (talk) 15:18, 20 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I agree. Plow ahead and we can tweak later. I'd as soon mention things here because I may have missed your intent or looked at the page at an intermediate stage.--Curtis Clark (talk) 16:51, 20 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

WPCSU

Glad to see you have started WikiProject California State University. About time the CSU starts catching up with the UC system and its WikiProject University of California. One of the big needs is adequate biographical articles on CSU campus presidents. Only a couple are more than stubs, and most aren't even started. I've done some work referencing Sonoma State University and its president Ruben Arminana (I'm an emeritus professor at SSU), and modest edits on a couple others. Obvious need for a systematic approach. Dwalls (talk) 01:46, 30 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

transparent images

On my talk page a couple of weeks ago, you asked how I turned Image:CSU.PNG transparent. For things like .GIF and .PNG images, I usually just use Paint.NET to add the transparency. Essentially, I use the "magic wand" tool to highlight everything that's not part of the image itself and just hit "delete"—it turns the backgrounds transparent (indicated by the grey-and-white checkerboard pattern). I use Inkscape to create .SVG images, but it's a bit more complicated. In those cases, I have to use a .EPS file, extract the .SVG image, and then edit it by hand in a text editor. I'm sure there's an easier way, but I'm not expert enough to figure it out. The .EPS files usually come directly from the college or university's website. Make sense? WPCSU Importance Assessment

Greetings, Dabackgammonator. I've been thinking about a consistent approach to assessing the importance of WPCSU tagged articles. You have appropriately tagged the CSU campuses as Top importance. I would assign the biographical articles on campus presidents as High importance (I've done that for our short list of five or six existing articles). Should notable faculty bio articles be assigned Mid importance? That category also seems appropriate for special single-campus-related programs or facilities, e.g., Fairfield Osborn Preserve at SSU. Are there other categories that could "automatically" be assigned certain levels of importance? What are your thoughts? Dwalls (talk) 06:55, 6 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It seems to me that notable alumni/former student bio articles also be assigned Mid importance.--Curtis Clark (talk) 14:46, 6 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Agree. Thus, so far we agree on:
 • Campuses - Top
 • Presidents/Former Presidents - High
 • Notable faculty/alumni - Mid
I would disagree with a "mid-" categorization for campus facilities. In my opinion they should have a "high-" level of priority as I think they are a key part of the university's identity as a campus and for the university system as a whole.--Dabackgammonator (talk) 17:16, 6 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I can see your point, and I can go along with you on "high" priority for facilities as significant as Fairfield Osborn Preserve. Dwalls (talk) 20:39, 6 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It might be a good idea to post the above points of agreement to the Discussion page for WikiProject California State University, along with any other principles, standards or points of agreement you and others may have arrived at. I'll leave that decision and summary to you, Dabackgammonator. Dwalls (talk) 20:10, 8 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

We should take take further discussions to the project's talk page.--Dabackgammonator (talk) 21:07, 8 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Howdy! I reverted a series of edits that you made to Vanderbilt University tonight. It seemed to revert to an older version of the page (one where Nicholas S. Zeppos was still interim chancellor, for example), and there was no explanation given for the change. I didn't want you to think I'd just rolled stuff back willy-nilly though. Feel free to revert if I've just screwed everything up. :) Cheers! Esrever (klaT) 05:40, 8 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I just edited the unit convertor from sqkm to km2. I don't recall making changes to Nicholas S. Zeppos, but if I accidentally messed it up I'm terribly sorry.--Dabackgammonator (talk) 23:57, 10 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Holy crap dude! I just saw how badly I screwed up the Vandy article.... wth was I doing? My bad. Go Vandy!--Dabackgammonator (talk) 00:00, 11 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Mexican universities

 1. Please stop adding information without sources. Some people have spent countless hours trying to improve those articles and you are just trashing them with wrong or just plain outdated info.
 2. People are not required to give you "a through explanation" of why they are deleting your unsourced editions. You are the one who must justify your additions with references if you want them to stay.
 3. Do not make a zillion editions in each article. That's why the Show Preview button is there.
 4. There is no such thing as the "Big 12 Conference" anymore; its dead.[1][2] Stop forcing its inclusion and read before writing.
 5. There are rules for adding fair-use images. Read them. "Non-free content is used only if its presence would significantly increase readers' understanding of the topic, and its omission would be detrimental to that understanding." We are trying to keep this encyclopedia as free as possible.
 6. It doesn't matter if the UNAM anthem calls it "universidad". It goes without saying that every human being singing that song would clearly know what they are talking about. However, the word means "university" in Spanish and is way too generic, even in Mexico City. Has it ever occurred to you that every university student, staff and faculty member calls its own university "university" in daily speech?
 7. Stop fabricating "conventions" out of nowhere. The convention for the Monterrey Tech campuses is Tecnológico de Monterrey, Campus Xyz. That's clearly specified by the school,[3] supported by the Wikipedia:Naming_conventions_(use_English) (It can happen that an otherwise notable topic has not yet received much attention in the English-speaking world, so that no established usage exists. Very low google counts can but need not be indicative of this. If this happens, follow the conventions of the language in which the entity is most often talked about.) and that's the way they were named before you appeared and trashed them. Stop asserting your fabricated "Tec campuses convention". You made a mess.

1 "Some people have spent countless hours trying to improve those articles and you are just trashing them with wrong or just plain outdated info." First, you are talking about the underdeveloped article National Polytechnic Institute. Second, making a good faith edit is not "trashing". "Please stop adding information without sources." if you can go to the article's references, you can see that 4 out of the mere 9 references in the article are are ones I added.
2. "People are not required to give you "a through explanation" of why they are deleting your unsourced editions." Well, maybe not necessarily a "through" one, but definitely more than "-unsourced" for wiping out over 2000 kbytes of information. 1
3. I totally give you that one! I'll try to force down on myself from now on. lol.
4. "There is no such thing as the "Big 12 Conference" anymore; its dead.[4][5]". Dude, if you count with this info why don't you just edit my clear mistake rather than erasing it altogether?
5. "Non-free content is used only if its presence would significantly increase readers' understanding of the topic, and its omission would be detrimental to that understanding." Exactly why:
and several more have their athletic departments' logo on the infobox and on the Athletics section of the article.
6. "It doesn't matter if the UNAM anthem calls it 'universidad'. It goes without saying that every human being singing that song would clearly know what they are talking about. However, the word means "university" in Spanish and is way too generic, even in Mexico City. Has it ever occurred to you that every university student, staff and faculty member calls its own university 'university' in daily speech?" Usually I would agree with these but look at the University of Virginia. Most people in Mexico, and specially Mexico City refer the "UNAM" athletic programs as "Universidad" just like people refer to the University of California, Berkeley as "California" or the University of Texas, Austin as "Texas".
7."The convention for the Monterrey Tech campuses is Tecnológico de Monterrey, Campus Xyz." Now who is the one using "just plain outdated info". If I'm an English speaking reader in the English language Wikipedia would I rather have an article titled "Tecnológico de Monterrey, Campus Monterrey" or "Monterrey Institute of Technology and Higher Education, Monterrey"? The extra word "campus" makes it sound awkward. In addition, the Tec system article is titled Monterrey Institute of Technology and Higher Education so I don't understand the big fuzz about this move. It's clearly one or the other.

TUSC token 222745672f81b7dd6ef2fe1a12869293

I am now proud owner of a TUSC account!

A new round of Collaboration of the Month is about to begin!

The current University Collaborations of the Month is
University of California, Berkeley

Every month a B-Class higher education-related topic is chosen for you to improve. Be bold!
This COTM is organized by Wikipedia:WikiProject Universities. (Nominate future collaborations or see past collaborations.)
This WP:UNI/COTM is effective: Dec 01 2008 ~ Dec 31 2008.
Pick your next WikiProject Universities COTM Candidate!

Yes, it's that time! A new article has been chosen our COTM next month.

Here's something I want to try, start treating it as a peer review. Start by skimming through the article, making sure the article fits our article guidelines. Then review for content: any copyvio, notability issues, reference listings, following the Manual of Style. Again, let's make sure we stick to the objectives listed on WP:UNI/COTM. Feel free to use the talk page of the article or COTM page to reflect or express opinions on how to make this program even better. Feel free to utilize #wikipedia-en-robotics connect if you wish, that channel doesn't get used enough and I'm usually there if I'm near a computer.

And here's something even more radical. See if you can attract authors currently maintaining the different COTM articles to join our WikiProject and better yet, our COTM project. I found when I started this program, jumping ships and editing other universities' articles was a big leap, but it's been very fun so far. I'd like to see more people actively participating.

Let's start off the new COTM program the right way. I want to see those articles in GA and FA soon. Hope everyone had a good Thanksgiving holiday and enjoy those Black Friday deals. - Jameson L. Tai talkguestbookcontribs 09:14, 23 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

CSU Chancellors

I've started articles on Glenn S. Dumke and Barry Munitz and expanded W. Ann Reynolds. (Dumke is scheduled for a DYK? feature later this Saturday afternoon). All could use more work, but the stub article on the current chancellor, Charles B. Reed is most in need of expanding. I plan to start an article on the California Faculty Association, and hope eventually to start articles on Collective Bargaining in the CSU and Continuing Education in the CSU. They may have to wait a while as I have some outside writing commitments coming up. Dwalls (talk) 19:42, 29 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Backgammon

Hey, awhile back you invited me on my talk page to the Cal Poly Pomona project (I'm a fellow alumnus). Just wondering if you are playing in the California State Backgammon Championship this weekend.Alanmjohnson (talk) 19:56, 1 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

First off, I apologize for the spam. You are receiving this message because you have indicated that you are in Southern California or interested in Southern California topics (either via category or WikiProject).

I would like to invite you to the Los Angeles edition of Wikipedia:Wikipedia Loves Art, a photography scavenger hunt to be held at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) on Saturday, February 28, 2009, from 1:00 to 7:00 PM. All photos are intended for use in Wikipedia articles or on Wikimedia Commons. There will be a prize available for the person who gets the most photos on the list.

If you don't like art, why not come just to meet your fellow Wikipedians. Apparently, we haven't had a meetup in this area since June 2006!

If you are interested in attending, please add your name to Wikipedia:Wikipedia Loves Art#Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Please make a note if you are traveling to the area (train or plane) and need transportation, which can probably be arranged via carpool, but we need time to coordinate. Lodging is as of right now out of scope, but we could discuss that if enough people are interested.

Thank you and I hope to see you there! howcheng {chat} 23:41, 9 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia Loves Art LACMA meetup

Due to some unforgivable confusion on my part, the meetup on Saturday the 28th needs to be rescheduled. Please see Wikipedia talk:Wikipedia Loves Art/LACMA rules#Rescheduling poll to vote for a day/time that works best for you. Thank you and I apologize for the inconvenience. howcheng {chat} 05:52, 9 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia Loves Art new date

Based on participants' votes, Wikipedia Loves Art LACMA has been rescheduled to Saturday, February 21, 2009 starting at 1:00 PM. Unfortunately, I have a prior commitment and cannot attend. I will need someone to be coordinator for that day. Let me know if you are willing. Thanks, and have fun! howcheng {chat} 17:53, 17 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia Loves Art preparations

Are you read for WLA this Saturday? Here are some last minute preparations you should do before you arrive.

 1. Be sure you have a spiral bound memo pad or notebook (and pen) to take notes and to use for writing the accession numbers, which you then have to photograph (see Wikipedia:Wikipedia Loves Art/LACMA rules for details).
 2. Be sure to print out the scavenger hunt list at Wikipedia:Wikipedia Loves Art/LACMA rules/list. You may also wish to visit http://collectionsonline.lacma.org/mwebcgi/mweb.exe?request=onview1 to make a plan of attack.
 3. Since tripods and monopods are not allowed in the museum, consider making a string tripod (not as good as the real thing, but better than nothing).

Additionally, we will plan to eat out afterwards at a nearby dining establishment (TBD) -- hope you can join us for that. And finally, I was able to make arrangements for my daughter so I will be able to attend after all. Looking forward to seeing you there! howcheng {chat} 19:28, 19 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there!

R U by any chance familiar withe the Inland Empire Metroplotan Area of Southern California? If not how about with the Greater Los Angeles Area? itzzHouse1090duhh (talk2me) 23:29, 21 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Yes I do need smoe help, user Amerique and I are have a HUGE discussion on wheather the Greater Los Angeles Template should become the Los Angeles-Orange County Area Template. I am for the move because the G. LA template is missing alot of cities of the IE (it is missing more than half), and also there is all ready an IE metropolitan area template (that includes all its cities and towns, that I have well organized). The LA-OC area has none and there is very little to no information about that area. Please see the talk page of the Greater LA Area by clicking here or just tell me instead if the Greater LA template should be the LA area template to solve that problem or at least give me your thoughts/suggestions, Thank-You and itzzHouse1090duhh (talk2me) 22:51, 22 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I totally missed the fact that you gave me a Barnstar, until I recently looked at my user page. Thank you very much again! If you have any questions, please contact me at my talk page. Ian Manka 03:26, 29 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Please do not give final results for this program until after the show airs next Thursday, even if the official sources already reveal the winner. The revelation of spoilers of shows such as these are frowned upon here. Thanks for your cooperation. -- azumanga (talk) 11:55, 8 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It wasn't the final result, only the results for this week's challenge (which Danny won). I wish I knew the final result!Dabackgammonator (talk) 17:59, 8 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
