References
The following references were sitting on the page, doing nothing in particular. I.e. none of them had been cited. So I'm copying them over here. They should be consulted and used, or deleted. NB the only reference that was being used was in fact an encyclopedia article, which is not a great source. As Researching with Wikipedia puts it: "an encyclopedia is intended to be a starting point for serious research, not an endpoint."
Anyhow, these are the references that need to be used or deleted:

Sources cont'd
Hi guys,
It looks like you have a lot of sources going already. I was thinking that maybe we could expand a little "Major Works" by browsing through Mulata de tal, El Señor presidente, Hombres de maiz, and of course Leyendas de Guatemala. However this might be more reading than we can handle or maybe its not entirely necessary(?). Regardless:
Asturias, Miguel Angel. El Señor presidente. Madrid : Universidad de Salamanca Grupo Santillana de Ediciones, 1995. (not the 1st ed.)
Asturias, Miguel Angel. Hombres de maiz. Buenos Aires : Editorial Losada, 1949.
Asturias, Miguel Angel. Leyendas de Guatemala. Buenos Aires : Editorial Losada, 1957.
Asturias, Miguel Angel. Mulata de tal. Buenos Aires : Editorial Losada, 1963.
It looks like we have a lot to work through! I'll add anything else I find tonight.

Short List
Hola Equipo,
The bio section of the article looks like it's in good shape. I suggest we add some references where needed and, like Tessa was saying, focus on the section dealing with his works.

annotated bib
Hey group!
I just looked at my calendar - annotated bib is due soon! So, looking at the list, I'll see what I can dig up on the first 3 articles and book #2 (under bio), is that okay with everyone?
--Phxalana (talk) 08:56, 31 January 2010 (UTC)
annotated biblio
hello everyone,
i'm at koerner's and am going to start making my way through some of the books we have in our bibliography. alanna, i'm not sure what book you meant by the 2nd book. lets make sure we write down the names of the books we have begun reading so we don't overlap. i'll write down the ones i'm going to use in a couple hours. go team go!
--Trowan (talk) 21:25, 4 February 2010 (UTC)
So, i found a great book (university press) that i'm going to use for this assignment called "Las novelas de MAA: desde la teoria de la recepcion". Alanna is using the book by Richard Callan. I also took out a few other books that will come in handy later. good luck guys, --Trowan (talk) 19:59, 6 February 2010 (UTC)
mmm libraries
hey guys
so i'm at ikb right now - i've downloaded the second two articles and i'll read/annotate them hopefully tonight. i'll check out my Callan book tomorrow and read/annotate it then. for the first article - i couldn't figure out how to get back to the page i originally found it on... apparently EBSCOhost is very picky that way! anyway - i'll just stick to my 2 articles and the one book. if i have any extra time this weekend i'll try to knock out another book. i'll keep you guys posted!
happy readings! --Phxalana (talk) 03:09, 7 February 2010 (UTC)
Game Plan
After Wednesday's class, this is more or less how we plan to go about editing this article as a group:
1. Read through the article* if you haven't already! Where is it lacking? Read through the discussion page criticism on the article as well to get an idea of how the article has evolved and where we can take it.
2. Read through the source(s) (the book and/or articles you wrote an annotated bibliography for) that you plan to use. Are they reliable sources*? Decide what sections of the article your sources are best applicable to.
3. Once you have decided what sections you are going to work on, begin checking the citations. Are they reliable sources? If not, maybe we can re-source them or delete them altogether.
4. Begin to edit using the information you have from your source. This will happen bit by bit. It is a process which can get a bit confusing. If lost, there are many wikipedia help pages to guide you through.
5. How is the grammar? Check for flow of ideas, use of verbs, fragment sentences, etc. Again, you can refer to the wiki "good article" page to see what they think is considered good academic writing.
Also, remember to keep in contact with the group! If you plan on creating a new section, let us know and we'll keep an eye out for relative information in our sources. Two of us might be working on the same section which could get confusing. Once you know what section(s) you plan to edit, let the group know as well. Throughout the process we can check how each other are doing and help edit.
- Check wikipedia's definition of a "good article" and a "reliable source"
Good luck, --Trowan (talk) 19:52, 11 March 2010 (UTC)
- Because I know it can be confusing, here are quicklinks to info about Good Articles and Reliable Sources. Let me know if there's anything I can do to help! Scartol • Tok 18:45, 9 April 2010 (UTC)
new sections
Hola equipo,
I have sketches of material to start two new sections. One entitled "Magical realism" (Asturias' role etc.) and one on the role of myth in his writing. The later could perhaps be incorporated in the Mayan influences section if it seems like a better fit, but I've found 3 good articles on the subject and I have a feeling a new section could emerge.
Any ideas for new sections?
--Daquigg (talk) 04:08, 9 April 2010 (UTC)
- I've been away from this page (and all of Wikipedia) for a while, but I've finally got some time and I might be of some use. It sounds like the info. you plan to add, Daquigg, could go into the "Style" section; I actually imagine the main section being "Style", with general info. (including that which is currently there) listed before two sub-sections: "Magical realism" and "Mayan influence" (making it from an independent section to a sub-section of "Style"). Something like we did at Honoré de Balzac. Scartol • Tok 18:44, 9 April 2010 (UTC)
Great suggestion! i think i will follow up on that. maybe with a "use of language" and "surrealism" subsection as well. Working on it. Keep the criticism/advice coming :) --Trowan (talk) 04:54, 10 April 2010 (UTC)
Time to get down to business
Hi group,
I have begun editing all the sections that have nothing to do with his life, education, biography. If you have anything to add, please let me know. i plan to work on our style section and rework it as mentioned above. suggestions? --Trowan (talk) 04:52, 10 April 2010 (UTC)
also, i took out what alanna added under "style" because it was direct quotes. i cut and pasted it below in case she wants to use it.
For Asturias, the most serious threat to fiction today is its drift toward journalism, the reporting of factual events laced with a plot to give it the name of fiction (Callan, p.13). Nevertheless, the events he narrates are entirely fictitious, and readers are sometimes disconcerted to find that his novels are in no sense historical. Leaving facts to history, he creates a parallel world with its own events and people and borrow from actuality only the spirit of the times, which he often personifies in a created character (Callan, p. 14) --Trowan (talk) 06:04, 10 April 2010 (UTC)
- Looks like many of you are used to using MLA style for citations — but most of the citations in this article use a footnote format instead. There's no one format required for Wikipedia, but it should be standardized throughout the article. Since most of the citations are in footnote format, I recommend converting the parenthetical citations that have been added into footnotes. It's not too hard. Here are the basics:
- Start with the opening ref tag: <ref>
- Write the citation as usual, without parentheses: Callan, p. 13.
- Finish with the closing ref tag: </ref>
- That's it! Simple, eh? In the article code, the citation will look like this: <ref>Callan, p. 13.</ref> When someone reads the article, they will see a hyperlinked footnote; clicking it will take the user to the "Notes" section at the bottom of the page, where the info is. Scartol • Tok 13:15, 10 April 2010 (UTC)
awesome, i was wondering about that. thanks --Trowan (talk) 18:55, 10 April 2010 (UTC)
