"Not Afraid" is the first single from American rapper Eminem's seventh studio album Recovery.[2] The single was produced by Boi-1da. It debuted on April 29, 2010 on Shade 45.[3] The song entered the Billboard Hot 100 at number one for the week ending May 22, 2010, making it the sixteenth song in Billboard's history to debut at number one and only the second rap single ever to debut at the top spot.[4]
Background
On April 27, 2010, Eminem released a freestyle titled "Despicable" over "Over" by Drake and "Beamer, Benz, or Bentley" by Lloyd Banks featuring Juelz Santana as promo for the single.[5] In the song, described as "uplifting" by manager Paul Rosenberg,[7] Eminem tells of how he has tried to overcome the troubles in his life from the past few years, mainly his drug addiction and rehabilitation. He also notes that he will no longer use the accent in the future right after saying how his last album, Relapse, wasn't as good compared to his previous albums. He promises he will never leave again and now only has his daughters and his music to focus on.
Unlike the lead singles from Eminem's previous albums ("My Name Is", "The Real Slim Shady", "Without Me", "Just Lose It" and "We Made You"), "Not Afraid" is not a comedy hip hop song, instead retaining a much more deep and profound theme.
The song was featured on 24/7, showcasing the preparations of the Floyd Mayweather vs. Shane Mosley fight.
Commercial performance
The song sold 380,000 digital downloads in its first week, and became the sixteenth song in the history of the Billboard Hot 100 to debut at number one.[4] "Not Afraid" is only the second hip hop single to debut at No. 1 following "I'll Be Missing You" by Puff Daddy and Faith Evans featuring 112.[8] It's the fourth fastest selling song, digitally, after "Right Round" by Flo Rida, "Boom Boom Pow" by Black Eyed Peas and his own collaboration with Dr. Dre and 50 Cent "Crack a Bottle".
Music video
Music video was shot in Newark, New Jersey on the streets in downtown.[9] Royce da 5'9" and Denaun Porter made cameo appearances in the video.
