Mallika Sherawat (Hindi: मल्लिका शेरावत, born Reema Lamba in Rohtak, Haryana, India) is an Indian actress and model. Known for her bold onscreen attitude,[1] Sherawat frequently featured in the media as a sex symbol[2]. She is one of the stars trying to crossover from Bollywood to Hollywood [3] [4].
Early life
Mallika Sherawat's birth name is Reema Lamba. She adopted the screen name of "Mallika", meaning "empress", to avoid confusion with other actresses named Reema.[5] "Sherawat" is her mother's maiden name. She is from a Jat family.[6] She has stated that she uses her mother's maiden name because of all the support her mother has provided for her.[7] She went to school at Delhi Public School, Mathura Road.[citation needed] She has obtained a degree in philosophy from Miranda House, Delhi University.[8]

Hollywood
Sherawat finished shooting for a Hollywood film named Hisss starring Irrfan Khan and directed by Jennifer Lynch. Hisss is a result of an independent co-production between the USA and India [18]. Endeavour Independent has bought the distribution rights of Hisss [19]. Mallika promoted the film with live snakes at Cannes Film Festival 2010 [20]. Sherawat also finished shooting for another Hollywood film Love, Barack directed by William Dear [21]. Mallika plays Aretha Gupta, a devoted local Obama volunteer coordinator. It is a romantic comedy set during Barack Obama's campaign for the US Presidency. First look of Love, Barack was unveiled by Mallika at Cannes 2010 [22].
Mallika won the 2008 Renaissance Artist Award at the 16th Annual Diversity Awards held in California [23]. On 14 August 2009, Sherawat received a career recognition Honorary Citizenship of Los Angeles for her career achievements and charitable efforts[24].
