Sahand University of Technology (SUT)(دانشگاه صنعتي سهند) is one of the best engineering schools in Iran. Located in the northwest of Iran, 20 km southwest of Tabriz, offering both undergraduate and postgraduate studies. The university offers 14 bachelors degrees, 36 Masters degrees, and 7 Ph.D degrees in 8 Colleges. It is named after the nearby mountain of Sahand.
History
Sahand University of Technology was established in 1989 by the approval of the council responsible for development of the universities and higher council of Cultural Revolution. An area of 410 hectares for university campus and 1100 hectares for research purposes has been allocated in 20 Km far from Tabriz.[1]
Academics
The departments of materials, chemical, mining, electrical, civil, polymer, and mechanical engineering offer degrees in B.Sc., M.Sc., and PhD levels. The faculty of basic sciences are responsible for basic science courses and cognitive courses and offers degrees in physics and mathematics. In addition, the Varzeghan Technical Institute offers programs in strip mining, ore decoration, and practical computer, and Benab’s Technical Institute also offers programs in scientific practical communication- data communication. The university’s e-learning center accepts students in three fields: chemical engineering, materials engineering and bioelectrical engineering.[2]
University’s accomplishments
1. The university is among the 10 best universities of the country from the point of view of ISI articles. 2. The university is among the 10 best universities of the country from the point of view of inventions in the country. 3. The university is the first university of the country from the point of view of invention registration in proportion to researchers. 4. The fourth place regarding the proportion of out-of-the-university designs for researchers among the country universities. 5. The sixth place regarding the validity of contract in proportion to the approved budget from governmental resources among the country’s universities. 6. Seventh place regarding the proportion of out-of-the-university plans to researchers and the university among the 10 best universities regarding the validity of concluded contracts. 7. Registering new kind of inside-the- ear electrodes as “segmental inside-the- ear electrodes” in companies’ registration office and Iranian industrial ownership by one of the academic board members. 8. Inventing a new method for mending the surface of the polymers by the help of mending the polymer accumulation and registering before the companies’ registration office and Iranian industrial ownership by one of the academic board members. 9. Inventing a new method for using the polymeric additives for reducing the raw petrol’s casting point and registering before the companies’ registration office and Iranian industrial ownership by one of the academic board members. 10. Inventing a new method for covering the banana using the eatable covers and registering before the companies’ registration office and Iranian industrial ownership by one of the academic board members. 11. The invention of a microcapsule for making milk cream and registering before the companies’ registration office and Iranian industrial ownership by one of the academic board members. 12. Gaining silver and bronze medals in international invention competitions in Geneva for finding a new method for covering banana using nutrients (silver medal) and milk cream maker micro capsule (gold medal), 13. Invention: designing and manufacturing a set for studying the non-heating methods for increasing the production and registering before the companies’ registration office and Iranian industrial ownership by one of the academic board members. 14. Gaining the first place in Chem-E-Car competitions among the country’s universities in 2006 and gaining the 5th place for he same in Malaysia. 18. The selecting the best student of chemical engineering in B.Sc in polymer engineering by the polymer association of Iran in 2005 as the first student and gaining a gold medal. 19. Gaining the first place in the 9th festival of inventions in Razi medical university by one of the academic board members. 20. The presence of academic board members in conferences in Iran and abroad for presenting their articles. 21. The outstanding growth of published articles of academic board members in scientific and research magazines. 22. Gaining Water Arbitration award from mechanic association (I Mech E) in 2004 by one of the academic board members. 23. Attaining the third place in world competitions BCI 2003 (Brain Interface Computer) in Germany by the student team of the university. 24. Outstanding success of the chemical engineering faculty in the congress of chemical engineering in Iran from the point of view of article presentation and scientific activities. 25. The growth academic board members in conferences abroad. 26. The growth in number of research plans of the university. 27. Producing the educational heating pump cycle by one of the academic board member. 28. Attaining the second and ninth place in chemical engineering in the north west of the country by two students. 29. Vertical increase in the academic board members’ rank. 30.
