The Morris family, and their friend Clay out on a day trip, attempt to find Zoo Gardens amusement park, but fail as they forgot the map, so instead they stumble upon HorrorLand.
A girl visits a themepark 1 day with her family. She does not like it and screams and wants her mommy alot and wets herself and cries.

Even the nearly empty parking lot is dangerous. The family car is somehow destroyed, exploding; the monstrous ticket-taker promises it will be 'taken care of'. The family enters the park. The parents look for a phone to call the insurance company, the kids explore the attractions. The "Doom Slide" almost sucks Clay into an eternity of sliding, but he is rescued when the Morris kids follow him down, surviving some violent dips, cobwebs and a fake fire.

Other attractions turn out to be too frightening. Lizzy and Luke continue to explore Horrorland, wary of going on any more rides. They notice that the few other patrons of the park look terrified, and that the Horrors remain strangely apathetic to their fears. Eventually, the children decide to go on another, "safe" ride-the Hall of Mirrors. While in the hall, the glass structures suddenly being moving in on the trio, threatening to crush them. At the last possible moment, the floor trapdoor suddenly opens, whisking them to safety.

Lizzy, now determined to leave, asks a Horror if he has seen their parents. The Horror tells her that he has-they were exiting the park a half an hour ago. Lizzy panics at the prospect of being trapped in Horrorland-until Mr. and Mrs. Morris appear. Lizzy wonders why the Horror lied to her, and begs her parents to leave. Luke and Clay agree-but the Morris parents, who have spent their whole day looking for a phone, want to go on a ride. They select the "Coffin River", claiming that the casket-shaped boats will lead them straight to the entrance.

Lizzy enters the coffin, and the ride seems to be going normally - until the lid suddenly slams shut. She hears the muffled cries of her family members as the air gradually begins to run from the casket. To her horror, Lizzy also feels of spiders running over her trapped body. Just as the oxygen depletes from the ride, the lid swings open. Lizzy escapes, gasping for air; strangely, there are no spiders in the boat. The others reveal that they had similar experiences, and decide to seek an explanation for their terrible treatment-but all of the employees are gone, and the gates at the entrance to the park have been locked shut.

The Morris family is suddenly accosted by dozens of Horrors. In a rage, Lizzy tries to remove one's mask-only to discover that it is actually the creature's face. The Horrors explain that they truly are monsters, and that the "park" is a front for a hidden camera television program TV show. As an apology for putting the group through such trouble, the Horrors promise them a new car. Unfortunately, this is a trick-the monsters have another trap waiting. This trap turns out to be an obstacle course, where enormous animals attempt to devour the family.

The Morrises survive the course and are promised a reward. They are led to an enormous pit of hot tar, and told that their "prize" is to be murdered on live television. Lizzy resists as the Horrors grab her. As she is about to be hurled into the pit, she suddenly remembers the "NO PINCHING" signs in the park. She grabs a female Horror's arm and pinches it with all her might. To her surprise, the creature deflates like a balloon. The Horrors attempt to escape, but the Morrises and Clay attack, pinching every creature they find. With their nightmarish ordeal over, the Morrises finally reach the parking lot. Mr. Morris commandeers a bus to take them all home, and the family heaves a sigh of relief. In a twist ending, however, they discover that a Horror has held onto the back of the vehicle for the whole ride... offering them free passes for the next time they visit.

One Day At HorrorLand is the sixteenth book in R.L. Stine's Goosebumps series, and is the inspiration behind the new Goosebumps HorrorLand series. A sequel appears in Goosebumps Series 2000, entitled Return to HorrorLand.

Plot

The Morris family, and their friend Clay out on a day trip, attempt to find Zoo Gardens amusement park, but fail as they forgot the map, so instead they stumble upon HorrorLand.
