Template:Infobox Chinese-language singer and actor Gloria Tang Zhi-Kei (Traditional Chinese 鄧紫棋; Simplified Chinese 邓紫棋; Cantonese: Dang Zhi Kei: Mandarin pinyin: Dèng Zǐqí) (born 16 August 1991), commonly known by her stage name G.E.M., which stands for Get Everybody Moving,[1] is a singer-songwriter from Hong Kong.

Biography

G.E.M. was born in Shanghai, however, she moved to Hong Kong at the age of 4[2][3]. G.E.M. was brought up in a musical family[4], her mother graduated from the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, her grandmother taught singing, her uncle played the violin and her grandfather played the saxophone for an orchestra. G.E.M.’s personal musical life began when she was 5[1] G.E.M. started to write songs, at the age of 10[1] G.E.M. entered many singing competitions[5] and won inter-school singing competitions.[5] When G.E.M. was 13, she achieved grade 8Cite error: The <ref> tag has too many names (see the help page). in piano. In 2006, G.E.M. entered a competition called “Spice it Up”[5] where she won first place and was noticed by her current manager, Tan Chang, who offered her a contract with Hummingbird Music[1]. Therefore, she became a professional singer at the age of 16. G.E.M. graduated from Heep Wah Primary School and True Light Girls' College[6]in Yau Ma Tei, Hong Kong, she scored 21 points [7]in HKCEE. G.E.M. continued with her education at The Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts in Acoustics[8], as a part time student. However, her busy schedule made her unable to attend the Acoustics Courses frequently. Therefore, she decided to quit the course during the first half of 2009.[8]

G.E.M. was highly successful in her debut year 2008 as she won 10 major awards. G.E.M. released her first EP, [G.E.M._(album)]; it featured the award winning song Where Did You Go. G.E.M. also appeared on screen for the first time on TVB’s game show “耳分高下”(Boom Boom Ba)[9] partnering Amigo (崔建邦) and on “美女廚房 2”(Beautiful Cooking 2)[10] she was with Tak Dik (狄易達). G.E.M. won the female newcomer singer Gold award from CRHK Ultimate 903 (903專業推介 sponsored by MANHATTAN ID 信用咭)[11] , where she became the first minor[12] to win the award. The media gave G.E.M. nicknames such as “巨肺少女”[13] and “巨肺小天后” literally means a Girl with Giant Lungs and The Young Empress of Heaven with Giant Lungs respectively because of her vocal range(B♭3-E7).

During May in 2009, G.E.M. went to Los Angeles, California, to record her first studio album, 18..., and has returned back to Hong Kong since. In December, G.E.M. went to Toronto and Richmond Hill in Canada[14] for her first mini-concert in Canada; she also held an autograph session in Pacific Mall, Canada

In May 2010, G.E.M. stayed in Taiwan for ten days to promote her Taiwan debut album, 18... Taiwanese Edition[15]. During her promotion, G.E.M. appeared on 我愛黑澀棒棒堂 (I Love Blackie Lollipop) and 百萬大歌星 (The One Million Singer); both are Taiwanese variety show. G.E.M. returned to Los Angeles, California, to record her upcoming album, My Secret[16] . G.E.M. has also appeared at the USA Swimming National Open Water Swimming Championships in Long Beach, California, as a youth ambassador for Project Kaisei.[16] [17]

Accent

G.E.M.’s accent[18] can lead her to being mistaken for a foreign singer. Her unique accent[8] is caused by the shrinkage of her left jawbone, therefore, the upper and lower teeth do not close up completely, and it leaves a gap in between. When G.E.M. speaks, air leaks through the gap, causing a seemingly foreign accent. There are surgery operations to correct this problem, but doctors suggest not to undergo the surgery until 21 when the body is fully developed. However, G.E.M. has already announced that she has temporarily opted against the surgery because of the high risk of the surgery and that the problem has not deteriorated in recent years.[19]
