You Me At Six is a hard rock band from Surrey, England. The band used to play in the emo/pop punk scene with the band's frontman Josh Franceschi, doing screaming vocals as heard in previously recorded EPs.
The band rose to fame in 2008, with the success of their debut album , Take Off Your Colours, which included the singles "Save It for the Bedroom", "Finders Keepers" and "Kiss and Tell". However, the band's future looked uncertain after a relationship breakup between Josh Franceschi and Matt Barnes. Luckily, the two managed to resolve their differences and the band's success flourished from there. The latter two peaked at #33 and #42 respectively in the official UK Singles Chart.[1] Their main influences include Blink 182 and Brand New
They were nominated for "Best British Band" at the 2008, 2009 and 2010 Kerrang! Awards, losing each time to metal band, Bullet for My Valentine. The third time (2010) their song "Liquid Confidence" won best single at the Kerrang! awards.[2]
The band released their second studio album, titled Hold Me Down on 11 January 2010,[3] which reached number 5 in the UK. This album included the popular singles "Underdog", which reached number 49 in the UK and "Liquid Confidence" which peaked at number 86. The band released the third official single from the album, "Stay With Me", on 5 September 2010.
History
Early years
Formed in 2004, You Me At Six remained small for at the peak of two years. During an interview with Dylan, bassist Matt Barnes said that You Me at Six started out travelling the UK on the Megabus to ensure they got to all of their early gigs. In their early material they incorporated elements of screaming and faster riffs, as placed upon their emo/pop punk musical style as one can expect in the post-hardcore genre. This earlier style of You Me at Six was expressed in early demo songs such as "Promise, Promise", "New Jersey", "Noises" and "This Turbulence Is Beautiful". Their first release was a four track E.P in 2006 entitled We Know What It's Like To Be Alone. They then released a four-track EP at the start of 2007, with the songs "The Rumour", "Gossip", "Noises" and "This Turbulence Is Beautiful".
They played many local and smaller venues throughout 2006, such as Backline Studios in Guildford and Facebar in Reading, building large local support, then in 2007 began playing larger venues. One of the first major breakthroughs came for the band when playing to a sold-out show at the Camden Underworld in February 2007, then later with the opening slot of Slam Dunk Festival 2007 (which they later went on to headline in 2009) They have also supported bands such as Elliot Minor. Their support slot with Paramore at Colchester Arts Centre also drew the attention of major media, such as Kerrang!.
Hold Me Down
On 11 November 2009, lead singer Josh Franceschi announced that their second album was completed, and would be released in early 2010.[4] AbsolutePunk.net later announced the album would be titled Hold Me Down and would be released through Virgin Records on 11 January 2010.[5] The band then announced shortly afterwards that they would be making the song, "The Consequence" available for free digital download from their official website.[6] The album was recorded in Reading as was their previous record Take Off Your Colours.[7] The album debuted at #5 in the UK album charts, however it managed to hit #4 for the mid-week charts.
Later, the band announced that the first official new single from Hold Me Down is titled "Underdog". The song was later made available for free streaming on the band's Myspace site.
Underdog EP
On 28 January, the band announced that they would be releasing an iTunes exclusive bundle, including the second follow-up single of their new album Hold Me Down, "Underdog" (which precedes "The Consequence"). The Underdog EP would also include acoustic version of the track, and an all-new b-side titled "Fact-tastic" which portrays the bands feelings about certain "losers" who are easily influenced by mistruth spread by the use of forums about bands, in particular reference to the popular website Punktastic.com.[8]
Stay With Me bundle
On 14 July 2010, the band announced the third single from the second album Hold Me Down, titled "Stay With Me". On 21 July, the band released the music video for the single on their official website <http://www.youmeatsix.co.uk>, and was made available later on iTunes and the band's Youtube channel. The video was shot on location in California before they headed out for the Warped Tour 2010. It was also confirmed that the band would be releasing an official iTunes "single bundle" for "Stay With Me". The bundle, which would be made available on iTunes 29 August, includes an acoustic version of "Stay With Me", along with a cover of the track "Starry Eyed" by Ellie Goulding (on which the band first performed at the Radio 1 Live Lounge in May). On 27 July, however, the band announced on their Myspace site that they would be pushing back the original release date (supposedly dated on 29 August) of the Stay With Me "single bundle", and that to be set on 5 September instead. The tracks to be included in the bundle however, were not made any changes.
Upcoming third studio album
During the midst of the band's tour, the band started recording demos and songs were written. On 6 September 2010, the band's frontman Josh Franceschi, posted a tweet on his official Twitter account stating that "for the first time since we (You Me at Six) started, i'm (Josh) feeling that album 3 is going in the direction I believe in."
On October 1, 2010, it was announced that the band was heading into the studio for recording of new tracks for the upcoming album alongside producer Matty O'Grady. The band stated: "We're so stoked for this upcoming record.. it's going to relieve an all new "You Me At Six" sound for you guys. A revolution." The band's frontman Josh Franceschi, has reportedly expressed "keen interest in recording a collaboration" with American pop punk band Paramore's frontwoman Hayley Williams after the 2010 Reading Festival's performance. The band however, hasn't made any official announcement of the collaboration with Williams yet.
The band's drummer Dan, has also confirmed with the RockLouder that that they're currently working on a metal-side project. Bassist Matt, also added on that they just can't reveal the title or name of it yet. The band has also stated that they would be releasing the five track metal-side EP in the near future as well.
Popular UK music magazine NME has also did an interview with the band's frontman and drummer, Josh & Dan respectively during the Leeds Festival 2010. Josh has confirmed that the upcoming third studio album is going under works, and that they have recorded several demos or tracks. "We're started to write stuffs down, but we're actually aiming for a September 2011 release", Josh added on enthusiastically.
On November 21, 2010, rumours surfaced on the internet stating that the band would be releasing a new single which sets to feature American alternative/hip-hop band Chiddy Bang, titled "Rescue Me". It was claimed that the single would be released on Jan 10, 2011. The band however, hasn't made an official announcement of the single and has yet to be confirmed.
On December 9, 2010, Kerrang! did an interview with the band and to have discussed about the upcoming record. Franceschi, the band's frontman has confirmed that the band have nearly finished writing material for their as yet-untitled-third album. He has also stated that they would be heading back into the studio in February-March 2011, and that to have delayed their recording date since October due to tours and line-ups throughout the months. Adding on that, "they're gonna get straight back into making their best record to date, with some collaborations that I (Franceschi) think will surprise people."[1]
On December 14, 2010, the band's frontman and guitarist Josh & Max respectively, have confirmed with British alternative magazine Rock Sound in an exclusive podcast interview, that there would not be no single to be release in the near future until further notice. Josh has also claimed that "goers and people on the internet just love spreading and setting up rumours and hoax around about the music scenes. Bands, artists, collaborations.. yeah you name them." Guitarist Max has also added on, "It's all just seems funny how people talk about it. I mean we, the band (You Me At Six) have just started on the writing and recordings in the studio, and people come talking about us on a collaboration with other artists and stuffs.. it just doesn't seem to fit together."
On December 25, 2010, the band posted a special message video titled "Christmas Message 2010" onto their official Youtube account, and that to have expressed their keen experiences earlier this year including playing on the Radio One Big Weekend, Leeds & Readings Festivals. The band has also announced that they would be releasing a new single titled "Rescue Me" which sets to feature American alternative hip hop band Chiddy Bang, most probably in early January. The single however, hasn't been confirmed to be included in the band's upcoming third studio album.
On December 27, 2010, the band uploaded a three-minute long teaser video titled "You Me At Six Ft Chiddy - Rescue Me (Teaser 1: Silent Lyric Video)". The teaser was completely silent but the lyrics of the track was included as the video plays. The official release date of the upcoming single was also confirmed to be 13th February 2011. The band also announced that the single would receive its first ever radio play on air on 3rd January, BBC Radio 1’s Breakfast Show.
2010 Tours and dates
You Me At Six kicked off their year playing a launch show in Kingston — originally intended to be an instore gig at Banquet Records, it was quickly upgraded to the new Hippodrome[9] — in support of their new album Hold Me Down on 11 January. As of February they have played 3 dates, including, also, an HMV instore and an HMV event headline promoting new British music at the Relentless Garage London. They announced that they would be playing several festivals including Punkspring in Japan, the whole Vans Warped Tour;[10] and supported Paramore on all Soundwave dates, as well as on Paramore's tour.[11]
They have completed their third sell-out headline tour in support of their second album Hold Me Down. They were joined by Sean Smith and Elissa Franceschi on selected dates. In Belfast, Matt told GiggingNI.com how it was "exciting to see how much you've grown from a year and a half ago".[12]
In August 2010, the band performed on the main stage at the Leeds and Reading festivals.[13] The band also did a Reading and Leeds warm up gig at Wedgewood Rooms in Portsmouth in August. The band are also doing a full tour of the UK starting in December 2010.
On 18 May 2010, You Me At Six visited BBC Radio One's Live Lounge for the second time, presented by Fearne Cotton. Aside from being interviewed they played a version of "Liquid Confidence" and a cover of Ellie Goulding's "Starry Eyed" at Maida Vale, in London live on air.[14] On 23 May 2010, they played the 'In New Music We Trust' stage at the Radio One Big Weekend in Bangor, North Wales. They were joined onstage by Sean Smith for "The Consequence" and Aled Phillips on "Save It for the Bedroom".
In Summer 2011, You Me At Six will support Blink-182 on their European Tour as well.
On 15 November 2010, the band announced that they would be embarking on their UK tour, which would be held throughout dates in December, also titled to be their "final Hold Me Down Tour".
On 3 December 2010, the band posted an announcement on their official website stating "both the band and YMAS HQ are extremely disappointed to announce that due to the inclement weather and transport issues, the two You Me At Six shows at the Edinburgh Corn Exchange this weekend will be postponed" and that "it's just not safe for the band or the attending fans to travel over to the show". You Me At Six has also made a reschedule of both the dates and an exchange fund of the tickets bought earlier.
