Breakaway is the second studio album by American recording artist Kelly Clarkson, released on November 30, 2004. Breakaway received two awards at the 2006 Grammy Awards including "Best Pop Vocal Album" and "Best Female Pop Vocal Performance" for the single "Since U Been Gone".[2]
The album debuted at number three on the Billboard 200 for selling 250,000 copies. It was eventually certified 6x Platinum by the RIAA.[3] It remains Clarkson's best-selling album to date, with sales of over 6,160,000 copies sold in the U.S, as of December 2010.[4] It is also and the second most successful Idol album in the USA, behind Some Hearts from Season 4 winner Carrie Underwood. In Australia, after debuting at fifty-four[5] and peaking at two, Breakaway was Australia's second best-selling album of 2005.[6] In Canada, Breakaway was certified 5x Platinum for sales of over 500,000 copies shipped.[7] Billboard listed the album as 29 on their decade-end charts based on sales.[8] Breakaway has sold over 14 million copies worldwide.[citation needed]
Writing
In June 2004, Clarkson expressed her intentions to collaborate with co-Idol Fantasia Barrino, who were both at the time expected to record an album.[9] Clarkson who wrote some of the tracks featured in the album with assistance from former Evanescence guitarist Ben Moody. She said, "[The new album] is like the first CD in the sense that it's versatile, but it's more into the rock. It's more into the soulful roots, and it's just a little bit deeper."[10]
The album's title track was written by Canadian pop-rock singer Avril Lavigne, along with Matthew Gerrard, and Bridget Benenate. Originally, Clarkson recorded "Breakaway" to tide fans over until September 2004 when the supposed lead single of the album would hit the airwaves.[11]
Singles
"Breakaway"
"Breakaway" was the first single from the album in the U.S. and Australia, and the fifth single in Europe. In the U.S., it was also a single from the soundtrack to The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, and was released nearly six months before the album's release. A departure from the pop and soul sound for which Clarkson had become known, the song was written by fellow singer Avril Lavigne, producer Matthew Gerrard, and Bridget Benenate. It peaked at number six on the Billboard Hot 100, and reached the top ten of more than ten Billboard charts (including twenty-one non-consecutive weeks at number one on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart). In Canada, the song peaked at number three.[citation needed]
"Since U Been Gone"
"Since U Been Gone" was the second single from the album, and the first in Europe. It peaked at number two on the Billboard Hot 100 and came in at number four on the 2005 year-end chart. It reached number one on several Billboard charts, and topped the Canadian chart for two weeks. It peaked at number 3 on the Australian ARIA Top 50 Singles Chart.[citation needed]
"Behind These Hazel Eyes"
"Behind These Hazel Eyes" was the third single from the album in the U.S. and the second in Europe. It reached number six on the Billboard Hot 100 and was at number ten on the 2005 year-end chart. It peaked at number six on the Australian ARIA Top 50 Singles Chart and reached number four on the Canadian chart. On the U.S. Hot AC format, it peaked at number one. "Behind These Hazel Eyes" was one of Clarkson's three songs in the top five year-end Pop 100 chart. It peaked at number one on the Billboard Recurrents chart.[citation needed]
"Because of You"
"Because of You" was the fourth single from the album, and the third in Europe. The song debuted at number ninety-nine on the Billboard Hot 100 on September 3, 2005, and reached number seven on November 10, 2005. It debuted and peaked at number four on the Australian ARIA Top 50 Singles Chart. In Canada, it peaked at number two and stayed in the top twenty for twenty-seven consecutive weeks. Over one year after its release to radio in Canada, it was still on the Canadian airplay chart. In Switzerland, the single remained on the singles chart until March 2009.[citation needed]
"Walk Away"
"Walk Away" was the fifth and final single release from the album (fourth in Europe), debuted at number ninety-seven on the Billboard Hot 100, a week before its original January 17, 2006 release date. The song debuted on the Canadian chart the following week at number 100. The single peaked at number twelve on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and at number four in Canada. "Walk Away" was released on March 6, 2006 in the UK as the fourth single and hit number twenty-one. In Australia, the single reached number twenty-seven.[citation needed]
Chart performance
After spending sixty-one consecutive weeks in the top twenty of the Billboard 200, Breakaway descended to number twenty-four. It remained in the top thirty for seventy-four consecutive weeks. It spent 103 weeks on the Billboard 200 (as of November 23, 2006), re-entering the chart (issue date: February 3, 2007) for its 104th week; this was its last eligible week on the chart. As of March 18, 2010 Breakaway reentered the Billboard 200 at position number 169. This was almost 6 years after its initial release. The album also re-entered the Australian ARIA Charts in the week beginning April 19, 2010, at number one hundred, while in Australia with the All I Ever Wanted Tour.[12]
With over 6 million copies sold in the US, Breakaway was the second most successful album by an Idol in the US, only behind Some Hearts by season 4 winner Carrie Underwood which sold over 7 million copies and certified 7x Platinum.
Touring
Clarkson embarked on four tours for this album through 2005 and 2006, Two North American tours, and one world tour in 2005, and one North American tour in 2006. The second tour in 2005 titled The Hazel Eyes Tour, had two dates cancelled due to storm damage to the venues during the violent 2005 hurricane season in the south eastern United States and were not made up until the 2009 All I Ever Wanted Tour.
