Dr. Sadie Harris is a fictional character from the ABC television series Grey's Anatomy.[1] The character is portrayed by Melissa George, and was created by Shonda Rhimes. She was made a recurring guest star for season five.[2] She was originally planned to be a romantic foil for Erica Hahn and Callie Torres,[3] but was later retooled to simply be a bisexual character after Dr. Erica Hahn was fired.[4]

Development

Background

The character of Sadie Harris is shown to have a detailed history with Dr. Meredith Grey, who she was friends with in college and with whom she travelled around Europe. Though they seem close, it transpired that during their travels, the two had an argument in Amsterdam, which caused a distance between them.[5] Sadie delayed her residency by working in a morgue before starting her internship at Seattle Grace.[6]

Personality

Melissa George describes her character as "naughty" and "mischievous" as well as "nutty." [7] George also states that she was influenced by Lisa Rowe, a sociopathic character from Girl, Interrupted played by Angelina Jolie.[8] Peter Nowalk, one of the show's writers describes Sadie as "quite a flirty gal."[9] Other Greys Anatomy cast members have also commented on the character of Sadie; Chandra Wilson states that Sadie "lives fast and wants to do surgery fast," as Chyler Leigh states that the character is there to "wreak havoc on Seattle Grace."[8] Showbusiness journalists have addressed the character of Sadie, such as Debbie Chang of BuddyTV who describes Sadie as "kind of a rebel,"[10] and Erin Lulevitch of TV Guide describes her as "masochistic." Chang and Jonathan Toomey of TV Squad also cast ideas about Sadie's self-incision in the episode In the Midnight Hour, wondering if she "has a death wish?" [11] and "what is wrong with her?" [12]

Relationships

Sadie was a good friend of Meredith Grey's and they went traveling in Europe with each other, presumably before starting medical school. Stacy McKee, one of the show's writers describes Sadie as Meredith's "pre-Cristina Cristina" and that she shares "a history with Meredith that Cristina can't".[9] Her arrival in Seattle causes some friction between herself and Cristina Yang, as Yang is jealous of their close relationship. She seems to be forming a friendship with Dr. Lexie Grey, after deciding that she "maybe isn't such a priss."[13] She has also been flirting with Dr. Callie Torres, implying that there may be a possible relationship between the two in the future.[14]

Storylines

The character of Sadie Harris makes a first appearance in the Season 5 episode These Ties That Bind.[6] It is revealed that she was once a very close friend of Meredith Grey's, a situation which irks Cristina Yang, who is jealous of their relationship. Sadie and Meredith have given each other nicknames; "Die" and "Death" respectively.

Sadie begins a friendship with fellow intern Lexie Grey, and volunteers herself to have an appendectomy,[13] so the interns can learn that surgical procedure, as long as she gets a chance to perform one afterwards. The surgery goes wrong however and Sadie's life is seriously endangered, though fortunately she is rescued by the residents. She is put on probation and rebuked by Meredith, though later tells Lexie that she is "not sorry."[14]

Some time after the surgery fiasco, Sadie approaches The Chief of Surgery and claims responsibility for the appendectomy. He says to her; "You know who your father is, and you know he's why you're still here."[14] Sadie is later seen flirting with Dr. Callie Torres, possibly hinting at a future relationship between the two; however, news of Melissa George choosing not to renew her contract after 11 episodes makes this unlikely.

Nonetheless, Sadie continues to pursue a friendship with Lexie, even going as far as to help her cover up Lexie's blooming relationship with Mark Sloan. In Episode 15, during a competition set up by Izzie among the interns, George notices Sadie's lack of medical knowledge. Although George offers to tutor her, she declines and chooses not to tell the Chief, which George does instead. When Sadie comes out from a talk with the Chief, she tells Meredith that she has decided to quit. When she tries to get Meredith to go back to "sleeping their way through Europe", Meredith declines her offer and Sadie leaves.
