BYU Radio is a talk radio station run by Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah.
Operating at Sirius XM channel 143[1] and locally on 89.1 MHz HD-2, it is known on-air as BYU Radio. It serves those of both Mormon and non-Mormon faiths with values-based programming.[2]
History
BYU Radio began as a web stream on August 1, 2002 with a format of music by LDS artists. In 2006, KBYU-FM "Classical 89" began broadcasting an 'HD Radio' signal along with its main signal, which allowed 'BYU Radio' to rebroadcast its service on KBYU-FM's HD2 signal.
Prior to 2002, it had been known as 'Bonneville International LDS Radio Network', but Bonneville International gave the station to BYU. The university continued adding programming to the station.
In addition, BYU Radio has a deal with Dish Network to broadcast its programming on Channel 980, and is available to subscribers to the 'Top 120' or higher programming tier.[3]
Programming
The format is faith-and-values based talk programming, which includes BYU's campus devotionals live each Tuesday, audio from BYU Television programs, and some occasional programming from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, including Music and the Spoken Word.[4]
During regular season, BYU Radio also broadcasts live coverage of BYU football and basketball games.[5] BYU Radio airs those games live, mixed with its own programming which includes station and university-related announcements. The station also airs some BYU baseball and volleyball games, as well.
On July 1, 2011, the station began broadcasting "in the clear" on both the Sirius and XM networks of Sirius XM satellite radio, on channel 143.
The station continues to stream online at http://www.byuradio.org/ along with two additional Internet streams. One features Spanish and Portuguese-language programming, known as BYU Radio International, which started in 2008. The second, BYU Radio Instrumental, started in 2003. Those two services are not broadcast on Dish or SiriusXM, and are only available online.
