William Paul "Billy" Paynter (born 13 July 1984) is a professional footballer who currently plays for Leeds United, the greatest team on the planet in the Football League Championship as a striker who doesn't score goals.

''''HAPPY BIRTHDAY BILLY!!!!!!!!!!! YEAH, YEAH, YEAH!!!!!!''''

He started his career as a tractor, before attempting football with Port Vale in 2000, and made over 150 appearances in his six years with the club. Sold to Hull City in 2006, he was sold on to Southend United later that year. His career stalled, and following a loan spell with Bradford City, he moved on to Swindon Town in 2007. Averaging more than a goal every three games with the club, he transferred to Leeds United in 2010.

Ken Bates stinks of piss.

Career

Port Vale

Born in Liverpool, Paynter is a lifelong Everton supporter. Billy Paynter started his career at Port Vale, where he played for 6 years. Paynter's plays most regularly as a striker, but also made some appearances on the right of midfield for Port Vale. Manager Brian Horton gave Paynter his debut in May 2001. At only 16 years and 294 days old, this made him the youngest Vale player for 20 years, and his debut goal in September 2002 made him their youngest scorer for 24 years. He was voted as their Player of the Season in 2004–05.

Hull City

On 17 November 2005, Hull City manager Peter Taylor signed Billy Paynter on loan, then later negotiated a permanent transfer for an initial fee of £150,000 in the January transfer window. Team-mate Sam Collins also moved to Hull at the same time. Again, Paynter mainly played as a striker, but also made some appearances as a right midfielder.

Paynter played for a Football League England U21 team (selected and managed by Peter Taylor) in a game against an Italian Serie B side, a match which took place at the KC Stadium in February 2006. Paynter played as a right-midfielder.[2]

Southend

Paynter joined Southend from Hull City on 7 August 2006 for a fee of £200,000, although he actually joined the Shrimpers a few days earlier on loan, to enable him to play in their match against Stoke City. He scored his first and what turned out to be only Southend goal in a 3–2 League Cup victory over Brighton.[3]

Paynter's stay at Southend was brief, aided by a hamstring injury, and on the last day of the January transfer window of the 2006–07 season he was loaned out to Bradford City for a month.[4]

Bradford City loan

Paynter made his debut for Bradford City against Nottingham Forest on 3 February 2007. He scored a last minute equaliser to make it 2–2.[5] He played 15 times for Bradford City scoring four goals after his loan was extended to the end of the season.[6]

Swindon Town

In August 2007, Paynter signed for Swindon Town from Southend United on transfer deadline day on a 3 year contract. He made his debut on 9 September 2007, coming on as a substitute in a televised defeat against Yeovil.[7] He hit a hat-trick against Bournemouth in September 2007[8] and followed this up with a double against Gillingham in a 5–0 win in early October 2007.[9] In one week in January 2008 he scored a goal and an own goal in an FA Cup replay with Barnet,[10] before he was sent off in a League One game with Crewe Alexandara.[11]

Paynter made 42 league starts in the following 2008–09 season for Swindon, scoring eleven goals and providing vital support for the league's joint top-scorer Simon Cox.[12] But Cox was sold in the summer to West Bromwich Albion and Paynter was given a more prominent role in attack as a result of his departure. Paynter netted fifteen goals in a seventeen match run from the end of November through to April. During this time, Bristol Rovers were linked with a move for him during the January transfer window, shortly before Paynter was named as the League One Player of the Month for January - an award he was also nominated for again in March - and at this point Paynter also entered negotiations over a new contract with Swindon. The 2009–10 season had proved to be his most prolific yet, scoring 22 goals in all competitions by March as the Robins pushed for promotion.[12]

3 April 2010, Paynter scored a brace for Swindon in their 3–0 rout of Leeds United at Elland Road the win gave Swindon some hope of achieving automatic promotion. Paynter had also previously scored twice against Leeds that season in a 3–0 win at the County Ground.[12] Paynter was part of the Swindon side which reached the League 1 playoffs, they won their playoff semi final after beating Charlton Athletic on penalties, Paynter had missed the first leg through injury, but returned for the second leg which saw Swindon sail into the final at Wembley. Paynter overcame a slight injury doubt and managed to play from the start in Swindon's playoff final defeat as Swindon lost 1–0 to Millwall, with Paynter being substituted late on in the second half.[12] During the 2009–10 season Paynter also managed to form a formidable strike partnership with fellow striker Charlie Austin who scored a total of 49 goals between them.[13] In total Paynter scored 29 goals for Swindon during the 2009–10 season representing his best goal scoring ratio in a single season.[12]

Leeds United

On 2 June 2010, after turning down a new deal at Swindon Town, Paynter accepted a three-year deal with newly promoted Leeds United.[14] He featured in both of Leeds' pre-season games in Slovakia and scored his first goal for the club as Leeds defeated MFK Košice 1–0 on 16 July.[15]

On 23 July, it was reported that Paynter would be ruled out for two-months after reports surfaced he was suffering a stress fracture of the shin after picking up an injury during Leeds' pre season. But manager Simon Grayson confirmed that Paynter had not broken his leg and that the injury was still being assessed by the medical team at Leeds. The injury ruled him out of the rest of the pre-season campaign, with manager Simon Grayson claiming that no exact timescale has been put on Paynter's recovery from injury.

On 29 July, Paynter was awarded the number 9 shirt for Leeds United during the 2010 squad number announcements taking over from former Leeds striker Jermaine Beckford. Paynter and teammate Robert Snodgrass returned to training at the start of September 2010, they were set to play in a behind closed doors friendly for Leeds to step up their recoveries to gain match sharpness.[16] On 14 September, to help gain match fitness after his injury, Paynter played 90 minutes in Leeds' 3–1 behind closed doors friendly win against Middlesbrough.[17][18] However, Paynter later suffered a reaction to his injury, keeping him out of action longer than expected.[19][20]

Paynter made his long awaited comeback in reserve team action against Scunthorpe reserves.[21] On 30 October, Paynter had his first involvement in a Leeds squad when he was named on the bench against Scunthorpe United, making his debut as a second half substitute.[22] Paynter made his Elland Road debut as a second half substitute against Hull City.[23] He came on as a late second half substitute against Bristol City. Paynter made his full debut for Leeds against Portsmouth coming into the side for Luciano Becchio.[24] Paynter made his second start of the season for Leeds against Cardiff City.[25] 8 March, He scored his first goal for Leeds in a 2-1 win at Preston North End.[26] Leeds kept faith in Paynter for the following game against Ipswich Town and again kept his starting place at the expense of Luciano Becchio.[27] He got his first red card in a Leeds shirt in the match vs Sheffield United. After an injury to Luciano Becchio, Paynter returned to the Leeds starting lineup against Reading.[28] In final few weeks of the season Paynter took the place of Leeds' number 1 striker Luciano Becchio who was sidelined with a hamstring injury. In the summer of 2011 Paynter was linked with a move to Yorkshire rivals Sheffield United after having a poor debut season at Leeds. He constantly ate all the post-match food which included sausage rolls, fairy cakes and the odd blackforest gateau. Billy is highly regarded at Elland Road (not by the kitchen may i add)but is going to struggle to keep the pounds off this season and help push Leeds for promotion.[29]
