Wikipedia:Changing username/Usurpations

This page is for requests to take over an account name that is already registered. If you want your account renamed to a name that is still available, please use Special:GlobalRenameRequest or Wikipedia:Changing username/Simple.

This page is a forum in which users can request, and global renamers (including Stewards) familiar with local usurpation guidelines, can consider and carry out, the "usurpation" of usernames primarily held locally. This consists of renaming an existing account in order to vacate the username and allow another user to take it.

Please note that global accounts whose "home wiki" is another project or which have significant attachments on other projects cannot be usurped here; these requests must be made at meta:Steward requests/Username changes (see meta:Help:Unified login).

A few users have agreed to provide assistance with the mechanics of this process. If you wish to assist as well, please read the linked page carefully.

• The account you want to usurp must have the English Wikipedia as its "home wiki", i.e. or should be displayed next to the en.wikipedia.org entry for the account at Special:CentralAuth.
• The account you want to usurp should have no edits or significant log entries to qualify for usurpation (though rare exceptions are made in some circumstances). This includes edits or log actions on other Wikimedia projects. These can be checked through Special:CentralAuth.
• Please do not request usurpation of another account if your own user account is less than several months old, or barely used. In order to ensure that usurped usernames be put to good use, we prefer only to grant requests from reasonably well-established users.

Instructions

1. Log in to your present account.
   • Please do not leave a talk page message or e-mail the target account yourself. If this becomes necessary, a user familiar with the usurpation process will do so.
2. Click here to place your request.
   1. Replace "TARGET NAME" with the username you wish to usurp.
   2. Replace "YOUR REASON" with a description of why you want to usurp the account.
   3. Leave the "Subject/headline" field blank.

If the URL above does not work, simply copy the following text, click "edit this page" and paste it at the bottom of the page. Modify it as indicated.

Advanced usage

For requests involving renaming an account other than your logged in account, use this: {{subst:usurp|CURRENT NAME|TARGET NAME|reason=YOUR REASON}} For usurp only requests, which leaves your logged in account untouched, set the usurponly parameter to yes: {{subst:usurp|TARGET NAME|usurponly=yes|reason=YOUR REASON}} To add an optional non default signature, use the sig parameter: {{subst:usurp|TARGET NAME|reason=YOUR REASON|sig=OPTIONAL SIGNATURE}}

3. Preview the changes and make sure both names are spelled correctly. Click "Publish changes".
4. Your request is now complete and ready to be processed after the hold period (usually about a week). If the owner of the target account does not object, a global renamer will fulfill your request provided other requirements are met. Do not be surprised when you find yourself unable to log in to your old account.

I would be minded to decline this request - single character non-latin character usernames and a recipe for confusion and cause more trouble that good IMO. However, as pointed out above, they are not technically against policy. I have no objection to another bureaucrat actioning this request, but recommend against it. Non-crat opinion: I'd decline it as well. Although there has been a recent, imho unfortunate, trend to one-character usernames (especially unicode symbols), I don't think it should be encouraged by fulfilling usurp requests. While the caret is a normal character on keyboards, the use of the name in a signature might be confusing. Also, as Courcelles points out, there is a hewiki user with edits, so they have the potential claim to the SUL account which would be denied if this request was fulfilled. @JC In the context of e.g. "My name is ^", "Please ask ^ about it" (in a threaded discussion, that looks like you mean 'person above') or "Please see the draft in User:^/something. It's quite a small symbol, and in addition it is used in things like references. I realise this is a judgement/opinion-call, but...that's my opinion. Cheers,  Chzz  ►  16:50, 18 August 2011 (UTC)

Chzz's arguments seem reasonable; while this character can be typed on a standard keyboard at least, it is generally used to refer to a previous post/er. The SUL thing I don't see as a huge concern, as the account there hasn't edited since 2004 (partly English link), but all the same I'm not sure this is the best username to use. • Surprisingly the username is not used much at all on other projects, though it is registered in 50. You will certainly have a fun time traipsing to all our sister projects usurping, but it looks like you'd be able to get the name on most of the projects except perhaps de.wv. If you are able to find a project where the username is not registered, you could secure the SUL by creating an account named Julia, making 36 or more edits, and then visiting special:MergeAccount on that project (or just wait for the usurp to be processed). –xeno^talk 13:22, 18 August 2011 (UTC)

• I read the guidelines in German and also the current/recent requests. Unfortunately on this occasion the Germans are very good at sticking to the rules and they really don't budge on the whole "must not have ever made an edit" thing, as far as I can tell (and I was looking for loopholes, ^^). I've been requested to provide an extensive biography on several occasions so I decided that making an article about myself here on Wikipedia would be a smart move. I just created an account for that very purpose but in doing so I realized that I couldn't make a "David Sides" username because it was already taken, so I settled for a "DavidTSides" instead. After doing some searching around on this site, I then learned that I couldn't create an article about myself because I don't own the "David Sides" username. I did some looking around and found that someone created a David Sides username back in December of '07 but didn't do anything with it. December of '07 makes sense because that was about the time when I started to gain notoriety as a musician so I'm assuming that individual is a fan and made the account intending to write an article about me but never did.
