Changing username/Simple
This page is a forum in which users can request, and global renamers (including stewards) can consider and carry out, requests to rename accounts to usernames that are not yet taken on any Wikimedia project. While global renamers carry out renames, other users (including bots) help by "clerking" the mechanics of this process. If you wish to help as a clerk, please read the linked page carefully.

Instructions
For help 'vanishing' from Wikipedia,
please see courtesy vanishing.

Once you have decided on the name you would like:

  1. Read this page first. You must be aware of, and understand, all of that information before requesting a username change
  2. Check to make sure this username is not already in use. Do this by searching for the name here. If the name appears in the results, even if on another Wikimedia project, it is taken.
  3. Do not create an account under the new name or move/redirect your userpages. We'll do that for you.
  4. Log in with your present username in order to place your request. Renames will not be approved if the requester is not logged in.
  5. Click here to place your request.
    • Add your desired username after NEW=
    • Add a reason for the change after REASON=
    • Do not change anything after CURRENT=
  6. Make sure that you have spelt your desired name correctly, including capitalization and spacing. Save the page. If your request is submitted malformed, please remedy it according to this page.
  7. Check back on this page periodically to answer any questions that may arise regarding your request. Please be patient. It may take a few days for your request to be completed. If you do not answer any questions, your request may be declined due to no response.
  8. Once your request has been completed, please do not remove or change your request. It will be archived automatically by a bot.
  • Requests that do not adhere to these instructions or that are grossly malformed are subject to removal.

Important Notes After you are renamed...
  • Due to technical limitations, usernames may not start with a lowercase letter. However, you may use the template {{lowercase title}} on your user and user talk pages, and change your signature to reflect your preference.
  • Underscores and spaces are considered identical by the MediaWiki software.
  • Use of a company, organization, group, website, or product name as a username is prohibited by the username policy.
  • Please understand the implications of using your real name before requesting a name change to it.
  • ... your name will be changed to the new one in the page history of every page you've edited.
  • ... your userpage and any subpages will be moved to the new name automatically. Please do not attempt to move them yourself.
  • ... links left by your previous signatures will still point to the old userpage; however, a redirect will be left behind to your new userpage.
  • ... your request will be automatically moved to the archives in the interest of transparency.

Requests

Secretary of the IPA → PatriciaKeatingIPA

  •  Bureaucrat note: Your username needs to represent you and not indicate that you are representing or speaking for any group or organization. Please select a username which meets these criteria. ···日本穣? · 投稿 · Talk to Nihonjoe · Join WP Japan! 08:53, 7 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Bureaucrat note: I'll leave the user a note. --Dweller (talk) 12:51, 14 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • (Non-bureaucrat comment) Bureaucrats - you're not helping much here. Why not PatriciaKeatingIPA? Do you mean there has to be an "at" between the personal name and the organization name? "PatriciaKeating at IPA"? That sort of name is encouraged AFAIK. Victor Yus (talk) 15:40, 14 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
(Non-bureaucrat comment) I think they mean, that "IPA" shouldn't be in the new name. Armbrust, B.Ed. WrestleMania XXVIII The Undertaker 20–0 09:49, 20 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
(Non-bureaucrat comment) My understanding is that names like "PK at IPA" are not prohibited and are even encouraged, as a way of letting everyone know about the personal connection (or "potential conflict of interest", for the paranoid). The WP:Username policy seems to bear that out. Victor Yus (talk) 10:39, 20 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • WP:CORPNAME explicitly uses "Mark at WidgetsUSA" as an example of a perfectly valid user name, and as far as I can remember we do have similarly named users actively editing Wikipedia as well, so I don't see what's wrong with this request. --Conti| 10:55, 20 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • If I could chime in, with an observation more than anything. There seems to be an implicit issue with the consensus opinion on CORPNAME in the community right now; Conti is correct that the text of the written policy currently allows a name like this, but such names are regularly blocked at UAA and declined at ACC. There's not a lot of consistency to go on. NTox · talk 14:56, 20 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
    • Do you have any examples for that? We ought to immediately change the policy if it's not being applied as it is written, then. --Conti| 15:18, 20 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
      • We have a 'Mark at Alcoa' precedent which means that those kind of names are not blocked at UAA. Secretlondon (talk) 05:22, 21 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
        • Looks like we need an RfC to sort this matter out. I just started one at the username policy page. And for the moment, this user (if she hasn't already been deterred from further contribution by all this mindless bureaucracy, for which I think sincere apologies are in order) should be allowed to use whichever of the proposed names she prefers. Victor Yus (talk) 09:32, 21 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
          • Thanks, Victor. I plan to stop by that RfC in time, possibly with examples of ublocks that have been applied on this basis for context. I remember seeing a couple Alcoa-type requests declined via unblock-un recently; I'll see if I can track them down. Kudos, though, to those administrators who currently honor the precedent.  Bureaucrat note: Are you aware that this will break your SUL, and you will have to request renaming on all other wikis? WilliamH (talk) 18:20, 24 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Would you therefore advise me to create a new account altogether if I wanted to retain an SUL? --Kriegslüsterner (talk) 08:50, 25 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Not at all - you can restore the SUL once you have been renamed on every other project. I was just making you aware though, that you would have to request it, which could be slightly tedious. WilliamH (talk) 15:26, 25 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I am not that attached to my current account. The tedium was precisely what my question was hinting at; a new account would automatically entail a new SUL, would it not? --Kriegslüsterner (talk) 22:56, 25 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

An article can be created at Increation, but make sure you understand the notability and conflict of interest guidelines before proceeding. Cookeyah → Yehudah770

  • Current name: Cookeyah (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · target logs · block log · list user · global contribs · central auth · Google) (ping user)
  • Requested name: Yehudah770 (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · target logs · block log · list user · global contribs · central auth · Google)
  • Previous renames: current user, target user, Queue: open req, closed req
  • For global renamer: rename user
  • Datestamp: 21:55, 28 June 2012 (UTC)
  • Reason: The username Cookeyah is in fact a business and therefore I understood why this would be perceived as a conflict of interest. I chose the name Cookeyah because I am in contact with people who work there, specifically computer programmers who have explained to me in great detail the projects they are working on. I simply like the name and knew it would be easy to remember. However, I am not looking to promote Cookeyah on Wikipedia. I am interested in contributing across a wide spectrum of subjects including obscure and ancient musical instruments, profiles of less common professional athletes, as well as technological innovations and this includes voice biometric authentication which Cookeyah does utilize as part of its data security interface. Again, I have no intention of writing Cookeyah advertisements. I strive to educate the wikipedia public on what I know and more importantly, in areas where I have access to reliable source material. This definitely includes topics in voice biometrics. Thank you for considering my request. Cookeyah (talk) 21:55, 28 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
