David Randall "Randy" Blythe (born February 21, 1971) is the vocalist of American heavy metal band Lamb of God and side-project bands Halo of Locusts and Cannabis Corpse. He is known as D. Randall Blythe on Lamb of God's albums. As a teenager, he looked up to the Sex Pistols, Misfits, Bad Brains, Anthrax, Motörhead, Slayer, and Pantera.

Professional career

In 2005, Blythe worked with the metalcore outfit A Life Once Lost on their album Hunter. He provided additional vocals on the track "Vulture" as well as helped in the vocal processing of the track. He later worked with them again in 2007 on "Iron Gag." He also appeared on the song "Skull and Bones"" by the band Overkill and "Adoration for None" on Gojira's album The Way of All Flesh. He was also featured on Shadows Fall song, King of Nothing, on their latest release, Retribution.

Blythe also has a side project band known as Halo of Locusts. They contributed to For the Sick, the tribute album for Eyehategod, covering "Dixie Whiskey".[1]

Blythe was featured in many of his peers' DVDs, such as Killswitch Engage's (Set This) World Ablaze and Machine Head's Elegies. Blythe was also featured in Metal: A Headbanger's Journey, Working Class Rock Star and Melissa Cross's The Zen of Screaming.

He appears as Luke in the movie The Graves (2009), written and directed by Brian Pulido.[2]

2010 concert incident

During a concert May 24, 2010 in Prague, Blythe was allegedly involved in an incident that resulted in an attending fan's death. According to eyewitness statements cited by online daily newspaper aktuálně.cz, Blythe was chanting "Come on up" in between two songs, which the newspaper noted may have been intended to invite applause from the audience, and not a direct invitation to the fan.[3] The newspaper went on to report that the fan tried to climb onto the stage and that he was thrown by the singer from the stage and fell backwards directly on his head.[3] The fan, who was reportedly not under the influence of drugs or alcohol--according to the same newspaper, suffered serious brain trauma, fell into coma and died weeks later from the injuries he sustained.[4][5]

A report about the concert at issue released on May 26, 2010 by topzine.cz stated that "one of the things that were unexpected was the behavior of the singer Randall Blythe, who on a few occasions struck some fans in a relatively brutal way off the stage." The article also contains pictures; on one of them Blythe is holding a fan down on the ground.[6]Meanwhile another report released two days after the concert at Abaton by metalopolis.net alleged that "Randy in a totally uncompromising way took down an impertinent fan, who has climbed the podium several times. The front-man clearly showed that it is his territory, he struck the intruder down, punched him a couple of times and sent him through the air off the podium, without even stopping singing(!)"[7] May 28, 2010 report by marastmusic.com stated that "some broken head was a testimony to the fact that the band does not like anybody on the stage"[8] while abysszine.com stated that "the only negative thing about the concert was, to say it mildly, disputable approach of the band towards the stage-divers ... when somebody tried to climb the stage, he was brutally swept down." [9]

Tomáš Fiala, a promoter of the concert affiliated with Obscure Production, said that there was no fight between the fan and Blythe, stating that "it was an unfortunate incident which happened during the concert when someone climbed onto the stage where he was not supposed to be."[10] According to Lamb of God's publicist Adrenaline PR "[the] incident deals with a fan that three times during the concert jumped the barricade and rushed Randy during the performance. It is alleged that the third time, security was not able to reach him and that Randy pushed him back into the audience where supposedly he fell and hit his head."[4] Guitarist Willie Adler said "I can't recall that particular show let alone a fan being beaten on the stage. I think I would've noticed something like that considering the Dime thing."[11]

According to TV Nova Blythe stated he had not been aware of the fan's death and he expressed his remorse.[12]

Arrest

On June 27[13], 2012, Blythe was arrested by Czech police on suspicion of manslaughter stemming from the death of a 19-year old fan who attempted to climb on stage during a concert at Prague's club Abaton on May 24th 2010, two years before. Lamb of God was prepared to play in Prague on June 28, 2012, but Blythe's arrest upon arrival at the Ruzyně Airport caused the concert to be canceled.[14]

Charges, detention and bail

A police spokesperson stated Blythe was charged with committing bodily harm resulting in death[13] under the section 146(4) of the Czech Criminal Code.[10] He faces 5 -10 years of imprisonment if found guilty.[10] Randy’s brother, Mark Blythe, told CBS-6 that he is awaiting further details and said the charge is "bogus and outrageous and will be dropped immediately."[15]

Reaction

In reaction to the arrest and detention, a fan created a petition at the official White House petition site.[19] So far it has gathered over 10,000 signatures.

On July 7th 2012 there was a Vigil was organized in Lamb of God's hometown of Richmond VA by a friend of Blythe. At the event Gwar (who are also from Richmond) front-man Dave Brockie said “I don’t think it was right him to be arrested. I don’t think it was right for him to be locked up.... This stuff could have all been worked out diplomatically or legally before he got there.”[20]

Blythe's spouse, Cindy Blythe, said to Czech reporters after visiting her husband "I think it's terrible what happened — that the kid lost his life and his family lost him — but I believe [Randy] is innocent. That's what I believe."
