The Graphics Lab is a project to improve the graphical content of the Wikimedia projects. Requests for image improvements can be added to the workshop pages: Illustrations, Photographs and Maps. For questions or suggestions one can use the talk pages: Talk:Graphics Lab, Talk:Illustrations, Talk:Photographs and Talk:Maps.
This specific page is the requests page for the photography workshop. Anyone can make a request for a photograph to be improved for a Wikipedia article. The standard format for making a request is shown below, along with general advice, and should be followed.

Advice to requesters

All requests:

  • Please make sure your request is "legitimate" by copyright. If the image(s) are in the public domain or freely licensed, you are fine. If the image(s) are "Fair use", there are only certain things we can do with them without falling afoul of Wikipedia's fair-use policies.
    • If you are requesting assistance with a copyright or fair-use image, don't display it on this page; place {{GLNF|Example.png|caption|align=left}} to create a link to it. Do not add the File: extension. Our fair-use policy does not allow displaying fair-use images out of their articles on ANY account.
  • Please check back regularly to see if progress has been made or if any additional questions need to be answered before the request can be completed.
  • If a request is done to your satisfaction, please mark it with {{resolved}}.

SVG requests:

  • Make sure your request can actually BE vectorized. Note that vector drawings are not suitable for certain applications. We generally use SVG format for icons, logos, drawings, maps, flags, and such. Certain things, photographs especially, are totally impossible to vectorize.
  • Per our non-free content policy, vectorization of copyrighted images is not permitted. If a vectorized non-free image is desired, seek out such an image from the copyright holder.

Remove watermark

Article(s): John I of Portugal

Request: Please remove the watermarks. On this link there are yellow circles that will make easier to see them. Thanks, Lecen (talk) 21:50, 29 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Would this trim down OK to single items?

Article(s): Semilimax pyrenaicus and possibly all 13 of the other snail species?

Request: It would be great to have at least Figure 1 as a separate image all by itself, if there is actually enough resolution to make that workable. Actually every one of these species would be nice to have cropped as separate images. Is that doable? If so I could give you the up-to-date names of the snail articles that each of the other 13 images would go to. Invertzoo (talk) 20:13, 7 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

These are the modern names of the 14 species shown, all of which have articles and almost all of which need a good image: 1. Semilimax pyrenaicus 2. Vitrina pellucida 3. Oxychilus draparnaudi 4. Perpolita hammonis 5. Oxychilus cellarius 6. also Oxychilus cellarius 7. Oxychilus navarricus subspecies helveticus 8. Retinella nitidula 9. Oxychilus alliarius 10. Aegopinella pura 11. Zonitoides excavatus 12. Vitrea crystallina 13. Euconulus fulvus 14. Zonitoides nitidus

File:Charles I. D. Looff.jpg Non-free image of Looff

Article(s): Charles I. D. Looff

Request: Please remove white border and library logo. Thanks, -- Dianna (talk) 22:47, 8 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Graphist opinion(s):

A non-graphic opinion: Since the subject died in 1918, the photograph was clearly taken before January 1, 1923, and is thus considered public domain in the United States (where it appears the photo was taken). I'd recommend switching the permissions to public domain to make wider use possible. Pi.1415926535 (talk) 23:59, 8 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
That's not quite how the law is worded. That's only if the image was published before 1923. We have no proof that the image was published before that date, only that it was created before that date. The rule for photographs is that it is the death of the photographer plus 100 years, so that is why we have to assume it is still under copyright. -- Dianna (talk) 02:47, 9 September 2012 (UTC) Actually, thinking this through, if the fellow died in 1918 it's pretty much mathematically impossible for the photographer to be alive, so I am changing it to PD-old. -- Dianna (talk) 02:57, 9 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

 Done - Image cropped and cleaned up a little. – JBarta (talk) 08:40, 19 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Catalonia

Article(s): Catalonia

Request: trim away extra flooring. if you have time, please make a second one, PNG, rotated, all back trimmed away. thanks. Kintetsubuffalo (talk) 09:58, 16 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I note that the caption to this image at 2012 Catalan independence demonstration reads 'One of the green cards handed out to attendees'. But the photograph is clearly of a page from a magazine - not a card at all. I hope the reason for your request to trim the edges is not that you hope to pass this off as a genuine picture of the card! That would be a little unethical, wouldn't it? Maybe a better option for you would be to amend the caption to say "A reproduction of one the green cards handed out to attendees, as printed in <name of magazine> on <date>. What do you think? Object removal

Article(s): Gerry Sandusky

Request: If possible, please remove the object at the bottom-left of the photo that's obscuring Sandusky's jacket. Thanks! Delaywaves • talk 20:00, 16 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Graphist opinion(s):

I gave the photo a better (tighter) crop which also has the effect of largely eliminating the offending object. – JBarta (talk) 08:33, 19 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Mokuaikaua Church

Resolved

Article(s): Mokuaikaua Church

Request: Please clean up the blotches and lines and try to denoise it. Thank you. KAVEBEAR (talk) 22:20, 18 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Graphist opinion(s):

I reduced most of that diagonal noise and got rid of major spots and lines. There's a spot directly over the steeple that I wasn't sure about. Is the upper dot a part of the steeple or a mark on the photo? I don't know, so I left it. – JBarta (talk) 08:28, 19 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I think it is probably part of the steeple. Great job, thank you very much.--KAVEBEAR (talk) 17:56, 19 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Here is an image of the church from about the same time and it too has the upper spot. – JBarta (talk) 00:47, 20 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
