Transit Centers
Bus rapid transit
Bus rapid transit premiered with the Metro Area Express in July 2005. It is about 12-mile (19 km) linking the River Market, Downtown, Crown Center and the Plaza Area. The first BRT Line is in service on Main Street. The next BRT Line is the 13-mile (21 km) Troost Avenue which started service on January 1, 2011. The next one under construction is a 15-mile (24 km) BRT corridor on State Avenue that is expected to start service sometime in 2013. There are four more urban corridors up for analysis.
Urban BRT corridors
- Main Street MAX Line - 12-mile (19 km) - 28 BRT Stations
- Troost Avenue MAX Line - 13-mile (21 km) - 47 BRT Stations
- State Avenue Connex Line - 15-mile (24 km) - 30 BRT Stations
- North Oak MAX Line - 11-mile (18 km) - 17 BRT Stations
- Shawnee/Metcalf MAX Line - 14-mile (23 km) - 24 BRT Stations
- Truman Road MAX Line - 10-mile (16 km) - 28 BRT Stations
- US 40 MAX Line - 10-mile (16 km) - 28 BRT Stations
Light rail and gondola trams
In November 2006 voters in Kansas City, MO approved a ballot measure,[4] which extends a 3/8 cent sales tax for 25 years to construct and operate a 27-mile (43 km) light rail line that would run from Kansas City International Airport in the north to the Kansas City Zoo in Swope Park in the south, with at least 13 stations encompassing the Plaza, Midtown-Westport, Downtown, and North Kansas City. In addition, this measure calls for a fleet of 60 electric buses serving light rail stops and an aerial gondola tram system in Penn Valley Park.[5] Following voter approval there have been discussions about the plan and surrounding issues by the Kansas City Council,[6] Kansas City's Washington DC lobbying firm,[7] Kansas City's Assistant City Attorney,[8] Clay & Valerie Chastain,[9] Kansas City April 2007 mayoral candidates,[10] and the KCATA.[11][12] On November 9, 2007 KCATA announced it would repeal the light rail plan approved by the voters a year earlier on financial grounds, and in a statement said it would develop a less expensive alternate plan by 2008. [13]
In November 2008, a ballot measure approving a 3/8 cent sales tax was again put before the voters, and this time it was defeated.[14]
Commuter rail
Kansas City has envisioned a 150-mile (240 km) regional rail system. It will encompass the seven county service area. As of 2010, six rail corridors have been proposed and will all converge on Kansas City Union Station.
