Rock Springs–Sweetwater County Airport (IATA: RKS, ICAO: KRKS, FAA LID: RKS) is a public use airport located seven nautical miles (8 mi, 13 km) east of the central business district of Rock Springs, a city in Sweetwater County, Wyoming, United States. It is owned by the city and county.[1] The airport is mainly used for general aviation, but is also served by two commercial airlines. Scheduled passenger service at Rock Springs was formerly subsidized by the Essential Air Service program.[2]

As per Federal Aviation Administration records, the airport had 25,541 passenger boardings (enplanements) in calendar year 2008,[3] 19,458 enplanements in 2009, and 20,993 in 2010.[4] It is included in the National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems for 2011–2015, which categorized it as a primary commercial service airport (more than 10,000 enplanements per year).[5]

Facilities and aircraft

Rock Springs–Sweetwater County Airport covers an area of 1,242 acres (503 ha) at an elevation of 6,765 feet (2,062 m) above mean sea level. It has two asphalt paved runways: 9/27 is 10,000 by 150 feet (3,048 x 46 m) and 3/21 is 5,228 by 75 feet (1,593 x 23 m).[1]

For the 12-month period ending December 30, 2010, the airport had 14,075 aircraft operations, an average of 38 per day: 85% general aviation, 15% air taxi, and <1% military. At that time there were 44 aircraft based at this airport: 84% single-engine, 11% multi-engine, and 5% ultralight.[1]
