Wikipedia:Meetup/DC/DC History

Washington D.C. History Editathon is a rare chance to go behind the scenes at the Washington D.C. Historical Society and use their unique resources to research and update Wikipedia pages related to D.C. history. This event is fortunate to have three sponsors: the Historical Society of Washington D.C., the Washingtoniana/Black Studies Division of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Public Library, and George Washington University. Each has rich collections related to the history of Washington DC. This event includes: a behind-the-scenes tour with the Library Director of the Historical Society, a tour of the exhibit: Window to Washington: The Kiplinger Collection at HSW, lunch, and the edit-a-thon. Focus

The edit-a-thon will concentrate on a range of topics around Washington D.C. history.

Tour

Jennifer Krafchik, the Library Director of the Historical Society of Washington D.C., will conduct a behind-the-scenes tour of Kiplinger Library and the exhibit "Window to Washington: The Kiplinger Collection at HSW."

FAQ

Do I have to register to attend, or can I just arrive on the day?

There is space for up to 30 participants! Signing up in advance assures that we will have enough food for everyone and know how many to expect.

Do I have to be a member of Wikimedia DC?

No, this event is open to everyone.

What happens if I get hungry?

Lunch will be provided by the museum.

What should I bring?

• A laptop. The Historical Society only has two public computers, and they will be available on a first come-first served basis.
• Enthusiasm!

Can I take pictures in the exhibits?

Photography will not be permitted during the tour.

What material will attendees be able to access?

Event attendees are library patrons and are welcome to browse the ready reference material we have in the main reading room. You may also want to access our special collections, by searching the catalog and filling out a call slip; library staff will bring materials right to you! If you already know of specific items you would like to see, let us know below and we can have it pulled for when you get here. Please use call numbers from the catalog! ;)

Will we be permitted to photograph pre-1923 (i.e., public-domain) items held by the Kiplinger Library for inclusion in Wikimedia Commons?

For the purposes of this particular event, if it is clear from the public catalog listing and/or the item itself that it was created prior to 1923, then you are welcome to include images taken by your camera or smartphone. Do we have to commit to the whole event or can we still attend even if we can only come to half of the event?
