The Witcher 3 features the new REDengine 3 game engine. REDengine 3, developed by CD Projekt RED, is a new state-of-the-art game engine designed specifically for nonlinear RPGs set in vast open-world environments.[4]

REDengine 3 improves significantly upon prior RPGs in a number of ways. REDengine 3 is a new technology, utilizing the 64-bit precision of modern personal computing.[4] REDengine 3 produces better quality visuals via high dynamic range rendering with the 64-bit precision.[4]

Additionally REDengine 3 allows for a complex nonlinear story line that previous game engines could not create except by sacrificing visual detail.[4] Prior to REDengine game engine, RPG developers utilized game engines that force trade-offs during development.[4] Either developers could have created, on one hand, a vast, graphically detailed visual environment at the expense of telling a simplified linear story or, on the other hand, a complex nonlinear story at the expense of creating a limited visual environment.[4]

REDengine helps to eliminate many of the game development trade-offs previous developers faced, allowing The Witcher 3 developers to create "an open environment with a complex, multi-thread story."[4] As in the prior two Witcher games, players are presented with a complex story featuring multiple choices bearing associated consequences. But REDengine allows for a complex story line without sacrificing visual detail.[4]

Consequently, The Witcher 3 features no loading screens, providing players a vast visual environment that allows players to freely explore and roam.[4] Without loading screens, the new REDengine 3 game engine further enhances and improves upon the concept of open-world gameplay that similar games, such as The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, currently offer.[5]

REDengine 2 (internal name)[4] was the game engine for The Witcher 2, and the REDengine 3 game engine takes computer graphics in The Witcher 3 several leaps farther, as follows. REDengine 3 creates more life-like visuals — better graphics, better lighting effects, better in-depth views.[4] The Witcher 3 will feature new facial and body movements described as "movie quality,"[4] plus living ecosystems that react to player choices,[4] all set in a more realistic open-world environment. The visuals are described as "superior picture quality."[4] More realistic and precise lighting no longer suffer from reduced contrast ratio.[4] REDengine 3 has a flexible renderer prepared for deferred or forward+ rendering pipelines.[4] The result is a wide array of cinematic effects, including bokeh depth-of-view, color grading and flares associated with multiple lighting.[4] The high performance terrain system layers varying material which can be easily blended and uses tessellation to produce superior visual detail.[4]

Largest open world in RPG history

The Witcher 3 will introduce "a living open world larger than any other in modern RPG history."[3] The setting is "30 times larger" than previous Witcher games,[5] requiring players to catch a sailboat for some locations and ride horseback to others.[3]

By comparison, The Witcher 3 has been described as "20% bigger than Skyrim."[6] Whereas Bethesda touted Skyrim's game time average of 75 hours,[7] CD Projekt RED anticipates 100 hours for The Witcher 3.[8] By way of further comparison, Bioware touted Dragon Age: Origins's game time as "about 48 hours."[9]
