Najafgarh is located at the outskirts of the southwestern part of Delhi, India. It has a mixture of rural and urban population from Delhi and Haryana.

Overview

It is best known as Home-town of Popular Cricket Icon Virendra Sehwag and Olympic Silver Medal Winner Sushil Kumar.Chaudhary Brahm Prakash Yadav the first Chief Minister of New Delhi was born in Najafgarh. Apart From them many other national and international Athletes and Sportspersons also belongs to this Region. It is also known for the speech delivered by Mr. Arvind Kejriwal on corruption and price hike in Delhi. Several religious/ meditation centres are located in and around Najafgarh. One of the most noted temples in Najafgarh is that of Sai Baba of Shirdi. It also includes a Holy Place of Hindu, Saint Siromani Baba Namdev Mandir at Rohilla Tank Sabha,Roshan Garden, Swami Haridas, CRPF Group Centre in Jharoda Kalan. A few of the meditation centres in and around Najafgarh are Radha Swami Satsang Beas at Ranaji Enclave & Dindarpur, Ashram of Sant Sri Asaramji Bapu, Osho Dham (of Guru Rajneesh), Ashram of Sudhanshu Ji Maharaj at Bakkarwala, Nirmal Dham of Nirmala Devi. Haryanvi language is widely spoken in the region along with Hindi. Among the prominent personalities of this place is the great musician Sir Keshav Huria.

History

Mirza Najaf Khan Korai baloch, the commander-in-chief of the Mughal Army, after whom Najafgarh is named.

Najafgarh was named after the Kiledar (Fort Administrator) Najaf Khan Baloch of the Mughal Dynasty during the 16th century,[1] a powerful Persian noble of the later Mughal court, Mirza Najaf Khan Baloch (1733–1782), whose country seat in the suburbs beyond the capital city later became a fortified stronghold of Rohilla Afghan chieftain Zabita Khan (b. 1785).[2] During the Indian Rebellion of 1857 and part of the Siege of Delhi, Battle of Najafgarh took place on 25 August 1857 between Indian rebels and British Raj soldiers in which approx. 800 people were killed.

A small settlement of the Mughal troops settled here in its infancy. It is now one of the most populous electoral regions in the National Capital Region of India (NCR). Najafgarh is surrounded by 70 villages bordering Haryana. Borders are 10 to 15 Kilometers from main Najafgarh Market.

Description

Najafgarh early being outside from Delhi got neglected from development and other facilities.But now this region is emerging as a hub for Education(Thana Road in Najafgarh is famous for its Coaching and learning institutes), shopping and several other activities. Sixth plan of Delhi Metro Included Najafgarh as one of the main station on South-west Delhi Zone.Also there has been a substantial increase in shopping hubs and marts in this area adding to the already opened showrooms of Reebok, Nike, Bata, lotto and many others.This place is also know for peaceful and tranquil life of its people, escaping from the Hullabaloo of Capital Region. One could find a good community gathering at several festivals like holi, dusherra, diwali etc.[3]
