"Pusong Bato"
Song

The single Pusong Bato was released by the Filipino singer Aimee Torres in 2003.[1] The song was reviwed by various artists and became a viral hit on the internet in early 2012. It was re-released by Star Records in 2012, on the album "A Album for a Lifetime" and on the "Juan dela Cruz Official Soundtrack"

Background and Release

Pusong Bato ("Heart of Stone") was written by Renee "Alon" Dela Rosa in 2002. Manuel S. Torres bought the rights to Pusong Bato and nine other songs for P140,000. He later gave Pusong Bato to his daughter Aimee Torres.[2] The song was included on Torres' 2003 album, which was repackaged by Star Records in 2012.[3]

The song was re-released by Dela Rosa and it became viral on the internet. Aimee Torres considered legal action for Alon's failure to credit its original singer.[2][3] Aimee was offended when Dela Rosa re-recorded and re-issued the song. According to Torres, "Actually, there could have been no problems had Alon given credit to Aimee as the original singer of 'Pusong Bato.' Which he did not."[2] However, Dela Rosa, who was featured in a GMA Network's show Magpakailanman, has always been recognized as the song's composer.[4] According to Dela Rosa, his wife's infidelity inspired him to write the song.[4][5]

Viral Spread

After Alon released the song online, its spread became epidemic. A video was uploaded on YouTube showing Nigerian Maritime students at the University of Cebu singing the song.[6] According to their professors, the students were taught the song so they could build a rapport with the locals.[6] Also, there were several versions in different local dialects circulating on YouTube, such as Bisaya, Ilocano, and Kapampangan. A music video parody was also uploaded by "The Kulaog Band," who were featured in a magazine show, Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho including the "Beki version" (gay version) and the Reggae version.

Several artists also did their renditions of the hit song, including international Filipino singer Charice during her guest appearance on Kris TV,[7][8] dramatic actor Jericho Rosales in It's Showtime,[9] and Jed Madela.[10]

In 2013, Pilipinas Got Talent Season 1 winner Jovit Baldivino re-released the track, and it is now being used as the theme song for a Filipino series, Juan dela Cruz.[11]
