: I've edited and created templates for several years and more recently Lua modules. I have 40+ years of programming experience and have edited Wikipedia for six years with a clean block log. Although I have only 116 edits to template space and 92 to module space, I have many more template edits in my userspace, eg. [[User:RexxS/MainPageFL]] where I was creating templates for Featured Lists to appear on Main Page. It would be useful to have this permission to allow me to do occasional maintenance on some protected templates, and to help with edit requests. Template Editor

(add requestview requests)

See Wikipedia:Template editor for granting guidelines. Applicants should show some evidence that they generally meet the guidelines outlined there, however administrators may use their discretion in determining which editors meet the general standard. Consider posting {{subst:template editor granted}} to the user talk page of approved users.

I frequently edit complex templates and occasionally find myself taking up admin time to make protected edits (e.g. Template talk:MedalTop). Indeed, some of my own creations are now protected. I typically stay away from templates that are not in my topic area or are beyond my comprehension. I think my having the template editor permission would be a better outcome for all.
