Gavin Miles McInnes (born July 17, 1970) is a Scottish-Canadian[1] writer,[2] creative director,[3] actor and the co-founder of Vice.[2] His behavior and political views have attracted the repeated attention of the media.[note 1]
Biography
Early life, education
McInnes was born in Hitchin, England and moved to Canada when he was 4. His parents are Glaswegian. [1] McInnes attended Ottawa’s Carleton University and received a degree in English[1] in 1992.
Career
As a teen, McInnes played in the Ottawa punk band Anal Chinook.[5]
McInnes co-founded Vice in 1994.[2] His role as an editor at Vice led to him being referred to as "the Godfather of hipsterdom"[6] and one of the "primary architects of hipsterdom",[7] He left Vice in 2007 due to "creative differences."[8]
McInnes started the website StreetCarnage.com. He also co-founded an advertising agency called Rooster NY where he serves as creative director.[3] He currently writes for the web magazine Taki's Magazine.[9] He also writes for the website VDARE.[10]
He published a book of memoirs for Simon & Schuster entitled How to Piss in Public.[4]
Personal life
In 1999, he moved to New York City. He is married and has three children.[1][11]
Media attention
Pranks
- In 1995, McInnes convinced a journalist from Quebec's Le Devoir that he and fellow co-founder Shane Smith were gay lovers. The resulting story featured the two embracing.
- In 1999, McInnes convinced a journalist from Ottawa's The Citizen that Vice was merging with MTV. The resulting article was three full pages. This prank later became somewhat true when MTV launched The Vice Guide to Everything in 2010.
- In 2009, McInnes convinced a journalist at The Village Voice that he had been knocked out after losing a challenge to an MMA fighter.[12] The footage was actually an outtake from a failed TV pilot.[13]
- In 2010, McInnes convinced a journalist at Gawker.com that he had eaten a bowl of urine-soaked corn flakes after not winning their “Hipster of the Decade” competition.[14] The footage was actually an outtake from a collection of comedy sketches called Gavin McInnes is a Fucking Asshole.[15]
- In 2012, McInnes faked a serious car accident for the stand-up comedy movie The Brotherhood of the Traveling Rants.[16]
Controversial statements
He was featured in a 2003 New York Times article about Vice magazine expressing his political views.[17]
In an interview in the New York Press, McInnes said that he was pleased that most Williamsburg hipsters are white.[17] He has also been quoted as saying
I love being white and I think it's something to be very proud of ... I don't want our culture diluted. We need to close the borders now and let everyone assimilate to a Western, white, English-speaking way of life.[18]
McInnes later claimed that the interview was done as a prank intended to ridicule "baby boomer media like The Times" in a letter to Gawker. [19]
He became the focus of a letter-writing campaign by a black reader, and Vice apologized for McInnes's comments.[17]
In October 2013, McInnes was interviewed by The Huffington Post as a panel about the meaning of masculinity, and said "people would be happier if women would stop pretending to be men," and that feminism "has made women less happy."[20]
