Let's optimize this! - UBC BIOL 345

Hello yunshui,

I'm user optimize this, and it's exciting to have an ambassador and be a part of Wikipedia, which I use frequently. I'm thinking of working on a page for estuary restoration, so let's optimize this!

Cheers!

BIOL 345

Hi Yunshui

I am new to Wikipedia and I am in BIOL 345 at UBC! I look forward for your guidance and help for our upcoming project!

Spamfighter back, again, as SPAMfighter

Hi Yunshui
Just letting you know that Spamfighter, which you deleted last December 19 as a 'G4, re-creation (Deletion log here) after several prior deletions, is back again as SPAMfighter, which has also been deleted before here.
I don't know if this version is any different to the deleted ones. Regards & Happy New Year! 220 of Borg 00:37, 18 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Cheers for letting me know. Although it's less promotional than some of the previous efforts it still suffers from the same notability issues, so I've taken it down. I don't think the user who created it is the same person as has done so previously, so I'm not going to take any action against them. Yunshui  08:59, 20 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Request

Asking if you could restore the history user subpage for me: User:Moe Epsilon/Userpage Challenge. (You were chosen because you were actively the last administrator). Thanks for the help. Regards, — Moe Epsilon 13:07, 20 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

 Done, Moe Epsilon. Yunshui  13:08, 20 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. :) Regards, — Moe Epsilon 13:09, 20 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Advertising

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advertising Adding a productname to one of many incomplete wiki lists is not advertising. it's neutral referencing. can you see our CAD at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_computer-aided_design_editors ? I'm not gonna add it describing it as "the best CAD for AEC" (although it certainly is). Due to an ill-advised policy of wikipedia i will create a new username - but labeling our account as "advertising" is baseless prejudice. Just because someone smokes doesn't mean they are smoking. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 37.209.180.8 (talk) 13:49, 20 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

User:MesserliInformatikAG, I presume? The fact that you appear to have created a single-purpose account with the primary intent of adding your products to various listing is concerning, but the fact that you appear to believe this to be in accordance with Wikipedia's guidelines is more concerning still. Your opinion on whether our policies are "ill-advised" or not is irrelevant - this is a private website, and if you want to edit here you will need to abide by its policies, whether you approve of them or not. Some further polices you will need to familiarise yourself with are WP:Source list (entries included in lists on Wikipedia must be based on reliable sources), COI (editors with a conflict of interest should not edit topics which pertain to that conflict of interest) and WP:NOTDIR (Wikipedia is not a business directory or catalogue). Talkback

Hello, Yunshui. You have new messages at Paquito490's talk page.
You can remove this notice at any time by removing the {{Talkback}} or {{Tb}} template.

Consider removing the no-longer-needed "create protection" from this page. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 16:16, 21 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Not really necessary (since the page now exists, the create protection doesn't have any effect or appear anywhere - it's not even an option on the protection tab) but since you asked,  Done. Yunshui  08:34, 22 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Request for assistance

Hello! I have a problem with an editor who keeps removing a legitimate template at Lajos Kossuth article. I've added Template:Refimprove because, as it can be easily seen, there are many paragraphs without any source. However, this editor removed it 4 times, without giving any valid reason (only "vandalism" and "rv vandalism'). The most confusing fact is that he added the same template at Avram Iancu article: [1], using my edit summary at Lajos Kossuth article ("many passages are unsourced"). 86.127.27.11 (talk) 09:05, 22 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Given the range of IPs involved, the best I can do is to semi-protect the page - which does, of course, prevent you from editing it as well. I've done so; if you come up with any sources, please stick an {{edit request}} template on the talkpage and I'll add them for you. Yunshui  09:18, 22 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for responding to helpme template

Thank you for responding to my queries. I want to clarify my queries a bit more.

By editing an image on commons I meant "Can I crop an image so as to get a closeup of the picture instead of downloading the image and croping it on my system and then re-uploading that picture.

My query about merging meant that sometimes back when I visited a museum, I created a page about the museum without thinking about the fact that the museum is a part of an organization that among other things host a museum. Now I would like to make a new page about the organisation Ghalib Academy and include the page Ghalib Museum, New Delhi as a subsection of that page.

Thank you as your answer about linking sub sections was more than satisfactory.

Anwaraj (talk) 10:46, 22 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Ah, I see. Well, the answer's no as far as the picture is concerned, you'll need to upload a modified version. You've got a couple of options with the museum article; personally I'd retain it, add a couple of sentences about it in the Ghalib Academy article, and use {{Main}} to direct interested parties to the article about the museum. If that doesn't appeal, other solutions would be to move the existing page on the museum to the title "Ghalib Academy" and then add text about the Academy's other operations (this is the easiest way to remove the page about the museum without losing the page history), or copy the text of the museum article (it's all your own work, bar a few minor formatting changes, so there's no copyright concern to worry about) into the new article and request deletion of the museum page with {{db-g7}}. You can also keep the existing page about the museum, but duplicate its text in the new article and add {{copied}} to the new article's talkpage. Lots of choices... Yunshui  12:20, 22 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thank You. Will try to do as suggested. Anwaraj (talk) 12:37, 22 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

BTW, Anwaraj, you can crop an image without uploading a cropped version. The syntax is a bit tricky, but you can do this with the help of {{Annotated image}}. See its documentation here for more details. E.g. the File:Bust of Mirza Ghalib.JPG can be cropped to give:
Cropped Mirza Ghalib bust

Wow! Was looking for something like this only. Can you please give me a link where I can find more like this... Thank You
Anwaraj (talk) 14:03, 22 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Anwaraj: You are most welcome. BTW it is me, User:Wamiq, who wrote this, if you didn't know (as it seems from your edit summary here). And I'm sorry I didn't understand what you meant by "give me a link where I can find more like this"... ШαмıQ @ 14:17, 22 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Good call Wamiq; I hadn't thought of using image templates within Wikipedia to get the effect he wanted. As to "more like this", I'd guess Category:Graphic templates would probably be the obvious place to start. Yunshui  15:15, 22 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

RevDel

I was eavesdropping at ANI, and regarding the RevDel, this edit still contains the revdel'd username in the edit summary. Also, while sleuthing, I noticed that user has a block template on his talk page but his block log is empty (maybe I can't see an underlying IP block or something). FYI. So I guess with the nature of this post, feel free to delete this from your talkpage once addressed. Rgrds. --64.85.216.191 (talk) 13:29, 24 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Good spot, I've removed the edit summary for that revision. I think the lack of a block log entry may be due to the account now being globally locked, though it still shows in the Block User screen. Thanks for the assist. Yunshui  13:43, 24 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Your userpage

Hello Yunshui. Thanks for being so active in patrolling/deleting CSD tagged articles, I keep seeing your name in my watchlist which is grand. On another note: I was thinking of undusting and recreating my user page. I really liked yours, so I was thinking about creating a new one based off of yours (read: copying your source and modifying it). I just wanted to check whether you're okay with this. :) Cheers. ~ twsx | talkcont | ~ 09:42, 28 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Sure, help yourself (though I nicked it myself from The Earwig). Yunshui  09:44, 28 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

CVU Training

Hello Yunshui,

Sorry If I am posting about the same thing again but I have some questions on this, first off I wish to have you as my trainer because you seem to be closest with my timezone and secondly I don't think you can as I have not reached 200 edits if you have any suggestions on what I could to get 200 so fast because I try to find pages to edit, infact I have edited one of Total War Shogun 2: Fall of the Samurai with quite alot of new information however not much else, any suggestions would be appreciated. MikeTheEditor104 (talk) 16:36, 28 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Mike. I'd certainly be happy to do some CVUA work with you, but you're right, you need to rack up your edit count a bit first. There are a few ways you can do this. The Contribution Team's backlogs list is a good place to start; it lists tons of pages which are tagged as needing attention. Deal with some of these and you can chalk up a whole bunch of mainspace edits. The Community Portal has a hefty to-do list, which might also give you some ideas. If anti-vandalism is your thing, you could try patrolling Recent changes; this is an excellent way to demonstrate that you can properly identify and fix vandalism (you might find it helpful to read through this essay first). Or just find a topic you're interested in and start working on it; good quality content is always welcome! Best of luck, and feel free to drop me a line if you have any questions. Yunshui  08:34, 30 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Hello Yunshui, thank you for your response and I will do as you suggested as it seems to be very helpful advice, thanks once again. :) MikeTheEditor104 (talk) 15:07, 30 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Abuse of your Privileges.

All I did was launch an appeal and you pissed me off by turning off talk page access. What's your problem? Respond on my talk page because I can report you and get you banned. Etrata93 — Preceding unsigned comment added by Etrata93 (talkcontribs) 02:21, 29 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

why u deletes peoples stuff

why did u delete endless sky of death — Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.175.176.137 (talk) 14:05, 30 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Because, as was noted on your userpage and in the deletion notice on the page, it was an article about a musical ensemble which did not credibly indicate the importance of the subject. You may want to read this essay for more information. Yunshui  14:08, 30 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The Vandal I reported

Hello Yunshui, thanks for blocking that vandal and responding to my report on him but he seems to be making foolish unblock requests now from what it seems. MikeTheEditor104 (talk) 09:06, 31 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Guess he won't be needing talkpage access anymore, then. As the blocking admin, I technically can't decline the appeal, though I'm tempted. However, I'm sure one of the other appeal monitors will get around to him before long. Thanks for letting me know. Yunshui  09:09, 31 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
By the way, I see that edit count's marching upwards; good stuff. Yunshui  09:10, 31 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Yes :) Thank you very much also it's because of that advice that it's going up, very soon I should reach 200 in no time. MikeTheEditor104 (talk) 09:12, 31 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

A brief history of my interactions with William

A brief history of my interactions with William

From memory, so please forgive if I don't get this exactly right.

  • Some time ago, it came to my attention that William felt that there was a lot of admin abuse, and no one cared to do anything about it. I informed William that I took admin abuse seriously, and would look into allegations.
  • Subsequently, William posted a few times to my talk page with allegations of abuse. I looked into them and unfortunately (or perhaps fortunately) found them wanting.
  • I tried to explain this to William. I haven't been contacted in some time. It would be speculation to guess why - one hopes it is because William no longer found any examples of abuse, although it is more likely he became convinced I wasn't supportive or eliminating abuse.

So I join the latest kerfuffle with a bit of history. I do not like overturning an admin block unless it is clearly wrong. IMO, this one is gray, and not warranted, but not so clearly out of bounds that it should be overturned immediately. My initial instincts (which must be good, because they matched yours) was to request that Orlady voluntarily remove the block. I made my request about the same time you did, although I was unaware of your request.

I'm frustrated that William is unwilling or unable to supply a cogent summary of the problem. I get dribs and drabs of it, and I am fairly certain William feels it should be obvious, but I feel like I am assembling a jigsaw puzzle, and wish he would lay out a clear timeline of what appended, and what was wrong. I think there's some umbrage at Nyttend for posts not made by Nyttend, but again, I see shadows. I do think the block is counter-productive, and hope we can sort this out, but it doesn't look encouraging.--S Philbrick(Talk) 16:34, 31 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

William agreed to my conditions for unblock, so the block should now be a moot issue.--S Philbrick(Talk) 20:08, 31 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
It's taken me far longer than I expected to get back to my computer this evening (and as it is, I'm only here briefly), so thank you for intervening. I see you've invested considerable time and effort explaining the situation, and your review of events seems to concur largely with mine. Kudos for stepping up and doing the necessary. A barnstar for you!

The Brilliant Idea Barnstar
This is for helping me start editing and doing something on Wikipedia and mainly for helping me get my Edits up as they have now reached 200. :) MikeTheEditor104 (talk) 22:04, 31 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Finally glad to have hit those 200, infact I used abit of Twinkle in the process to assist against vandals, anyway I am available whenever you want today to start the CVU if it's ok with you. MikeTheEditor104 (talk) 23:30, 31 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Twinkling already? Good stuff. I'll knock together a CVUA page for you later today. Yunshui  08:56, 3 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

CVU

Hi! I am interested in beginning my training at CVU. You appear to be the best trainer for my time zone. Please tell me if you can be my trainer. Thanks! Roborule (talk) 13:52, 1 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Looks as though I'm the only instructor for our timezone... I'm putting together a CVUA page for Mike (see above), so I'll create one for you while I'm at it. Yunshui  08:59, 3 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
It appears that neither of you have actually reached the requisite edit count yet (it's 200+ edits to article mainspace, rather than 200+ edits in total), but I'm willing to make an exception to the guidelines: Mike's raring to go and will be fixing vandalism with or without guidance (so "with" would be preferable!), and in your case, the work you've done on your adoption school is evidence to me that you understand the basic workings of Wikipedia well enough. Yunshui  09:07, 3 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I posses reviewer rights, and I was wondering if I could use vandalism I come across while reviewing those pages on my CVU page as answers. Roborule (talk) 00:41, 4 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Adoption request

Hi I am looking for an experienced Wikipedia to adopt me. I have checked several profiles and i think you are cool. Thanks in advance for accepting me.

Regards Masssly (talk) 16:47, 2 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Masssly. Right at the moment I'm afraid I'm a bit cautious about taking on new adoptees, at least until I see how the classes I'm working with in the Wikipedia Education Program pan out. I suspect that they will require quite a considerable amount of my time, and I'm concerned that I won't be able to provide much support to an adoption program over the next couple of months. If you're happy to wait, or to work your way through my adoption school with only occasional input from me, then I'd be happy to oblige, but if you're after a more hands-on mentor in the immediate future then you might want to consider asking another adopter. Hi Yunshui!

My name is Joe Tull and I am a member of Prof. Stuhl's History of Ecology course at Bucknell University. I am excited to join the Wikipedia community. I really appreciate that you are willing to assist our class as we focus on updating Wikipedia properly. I look forward to working with you again in the future as our class begins to make contributions to Wikipedia. Also, I actually have one quick question already if you would not mind answering. When I posted a response to Prof. Stuhl on my talk page, the text appeared in a box, but instead of starting a new line, the text just flowed out of the box in the same line and extended the page. It looks a bit ridiculous. Do you have any recommendations on how to fix this? Thanks again! Jjt022 (talk) 05:13, 4 February 2014 (UTC)Jjt022 Joe Tull[reply]

Hi Joe. There's an easy fix for that run-on message - you'll have started the line with a leading space, which throws off the software:
I'm guessing you saw something like this?
Instead of indenting by putting a space at the start of a new line, use a colon (or series of colons) instead - typing this:
:Some indented text
will give you this:
Some indented text.
Hope that helps. You might find the markup cheatsheet handy if you run into any other formatting oddities like this. Yunshui  08:35, 4 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
