adoption

I am an adopter and don't know how to start adopting my adoptee. Suggestions? Nahnah4 (talk | contribs | guestbook) 03:38, 27 December 2014 (UTC)

Find out what they want to do on Wikipedia, and help them do it. Start an adoption school for them (you can use mine as a starting point, if you like). Steer them towards YFA and help them put their first article together. Introduce them to our content policies, and quiz them on the finer points to ensure they understand. Make a shared sandbox in your userspace and invite them to practice there, or give them a collection of tasks to complete within it. Encourage them to go through the Wikipedia Adventure orientation, or to take the tutorial. If they understand basic editing, take them through copyright, the deletion policy, or image uploading. Basically, get them up to speed on how Wikipedia works, and help them edit it. That's all an adopter needs to do. Yunshui  09:04, 2 January 2015 (UTC)

Congratulations (or condolences)

Just saw the Arb Com announcement. Way to go! Mkdwtalk 09:10, 1 January 2015 (UTC)

2015 already

Hi Yunshui. No frills - just a quiet ‘’all the best’’ to you for 2015 and I hope you’ll continue to be around on Wikipedia for a long time to come. --Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 12:28, 1 January 2015 (UTC)

Thanks Kudpung. My best wishes to you and yours also; happy New Year. Yunshui  09:09, 2 January 2015 (UTC)

File:Black July 1983 Colombo.jpg

File:Black July 1983 Colombo.jpg I bring to your concern since User:Bgwhite has requested to raise this issue with you at his talk page. I don't see any genuine reason on the nomination for the deletion of above image. I have explained on the talk page and need your comment/review. User:Eng.M.Bandara has placed the speedy deletion for second time and disruptive.61.245.173.116 (talk) 09:07, 23 December 2014 (UTC)

Two users have now removed the CSD tags; it's clear that there is no immediate consensus to delete. I suggest you advise Eng.M.Bandara to use the FFD venue if he wishes to challenge the inclusion of this image; otherwise the two of you are just going to argue around in circles indefinitely. Nevermind; I see a sockblock is already in place. Yunshui  15:01, 2 January 2015 (UTC)

Closure

Hi, Yunshui can you close this RFC here, I think you would be of neutral tone here Shrikanthv (talk) 08:41, 22 December 2014 (UTC)

Shrikanthv, you might notice at the top of this page that Yunshui is away for a while. You may want to try Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Requests for closure: Noyster (talk), 11:50, 22 December 2014 (UTC)
I'm not convinced that it's possible to determine any consensus there. The problem is that you've worded the initial RFC very broadly - it's unclear whether the topic of discussion is the term "major", the attribution of victory to Pakistan, the use of "victory" instead of defeat" and so on. As a result, multiple editors have argued over multiple elements of the issue, with many suggestions being offered but no one course of action gaining consensus. Generally, brevity is good in wording an RFC, but here you've been too brief to establish the issue. For an RFC of this type, it would be better to offer a restrictive set of options, such as: "Should the infobox describe the outcome as a) a major Pakistani victory b) a Pakistani victory c) a ceasefire d) an Indian defeat e) inconclusive or f) something else?" This presents a selection of choices for editors and makes the subsequent discussion easier to control and interpret.
It doesn't help that you've gotten a bunch of personal attacks and heated arguments about tangential topics in there from the commentators (many of them would do well to read this), but even filtering all of that out, I see no clear consensus emerging from the discussion.
Perhaps I'm just tired - I've spend almost six hours reading through ArbCom material today - so I'll try and take another look at it next week. My gut response, though, is that I can't close it either for or against the proposal, since no-one involved with the discussion seems clear on what that proposal is. Yunshui  15:26, 2 January 2015 (UTC)

Are you available to be our Ambassador again?

Hi Yunshui. I hope you're enjoying your eggnog!

Ruth and I will be teaching Human Ecology again this winter, and it would be great if you could be our Online Ambassador again. If it's not convenient for you perhaps you could suggest someone else who could take this on. There will be about 30 students (slightly more than last year, and they'll be working in pairs to create or improve pages about ecology and sustainability (as about 35% of their course work).Rosieredfield (talk) 01:47, 1 January 2015 (UTC)

(talk page stalker)@Rosieredfield: Hi! I'm not (nearly) as experienced as Yunshui, but I'm an online ambassador and I could probably be the online ambassador for your course if Yunshui isn't available (due to ArbCom, etc). --L235 (talk) Ping when replying 22:12, 1 January 2015 (UTC)
@Rosieredfield: Up until this morning I would have happily said yes - however, having just seen quite how many ArbCom-related emails I've had in the two weeks I've been away (there are well over a thousand to catch up on) I realise that I'm not going to have much time for anything else this year. Sorry to disappoint, but I really don't think I'll be able to devote much time, if any, to the education program, and I don't want to short-change your students by promising to help them and then failing to deliver. If you need administrative intervention (to delete, move or merge sandboxes, for example) then feel free to call on me, but for general editing assistance, Lixxx235 or one of the other ambassadors would be a safer bet. Yunshui  09:08, 2 January 2015 (UTC)
Yunshui, thanks again for all your help last year. L235, thanks for offering to fill Yunshui's shoes this year. I'll leave you a longer message on your talk page. Rosieredfield (talk) 21:45, 2 January 2015 (UTC)

Induction to the 2015 Arbitration Committee

Congratulations on your success in the elections and welcome onto the 2015 Arbitration Committee. In the next few days we will induct you and the other new arbitrators. Please email arbcom-en-c@lists.wikimedia.org from the email address you wish to use for registration on the various private wikis and mailing lists. Please also indicate which, if any, of the checkuser and oversight permissions you wish to be assigned for your term (if you don't already hold both).

Over the coming days, you will receive a small number of emails. Please carefully read them. If they are automated registration emails, please follow the instructions in them to finalise registration. You can contact me or GorillaWarfare (the designated newbie contacts) directly if you have difficulty with the induction process. Lastly, you must identify to the Wikimedia Foundation prior to being appointed. Please promptly go to the Identification Noticeboard and follow the instructions linked there if you are not already identified.

Thank you for volunteering to serve on the committee. We very much look forward to working with you this term.

I had been hovering on the brink after being encouraged and badgered for months so at the 11th hour I thought 'What the heck!' and tried to tranclude but screwed it up, was then over then over the deadline, said 'What the heck' again and deleted the page (my candidacy - not the election!). Hi Yunshui, Wish you happy new year. while you were out i just made a major surgery to this page, is it possible to make DYK to this article here --Shrikanthv (talk) 09:05, 5 January 2015 (UTC)

No, it fails the criteria. Your improvements were more than five days ago and they didn't expand the article anything like five times over (it was over 20k when you started, and it's still only 28 now). Yunshui  20:03, 5 January 2015 (UTC)

Adoption

Hi! I am looking to be adopted. Please place {{ping|TheTalkerBot}} below (with your comment) to notify me! TheTalkerBot (talk) 14:15, 8 January 2015 (UTC)

Thought I'd taken myself off the active list... Hi TheTalkerBot; I'm flattered that you'd ask but I am much too busy with ArbCom this year to take on any new adoptees, sorry. Yunshui  14:18, 8 January 2015 (UTC)

ANI

Hey, dropping you a note to let you know that I mentioned you in an ANI post, although you've probably seen the ping already. Long story short, this is in relation to the whole stuff about Navin Raheja where you tried to help an editor with an explanation as to why the editing was promotional. The article was redirected to Raheja Developers, where there's been somewhat of an ongoing edit war where one side has been repeatedly trying to remove anything about some negative coverage that the company has been receiving in the media. (sighs) I've had to open up an SPI since I'm not sure if this is a case of a nest of paid editors (meatpuppetry) or just a sockpuppet. Just letting you know. Tokyogirl79 (。◕‿◕。) 09:34, 7 January 2015 (UTC)

Saw the ping, but thanks for the note anyway. Will keep an eye on it. Yunshui  09:49, 7 January 2015 (UTC)
Just in case you missed my ping: can you take a look at my comment in the section too? Most admins seem to be ignoring the topic (possibly because of the lengthy back-history); so someone familiar with the topic would be useful. Cheers. Abecedare (talk) 21:19, 8 January 2015 (UTC)
I don't think anyone's ignoring it, particularly, it's just that there's always other stuff to do... Based on the CU results I've blocked all but one of the accounts involved, and I've also semi'd the article for a month. Yunshui  08:17, 9 January 2015 (UTC)

Your ACC Account

Hi Yunshui! Your ACC account is up for suspension as you haven't been active in the last 45 days. I see that you're with ArbCom now which might exhaust much of your time. Would you like for me to suspend it until you've got time to be active, or do you think you've got a bit of spare time to fiddle around with some requests? Cheers (and congrats on the Arb bit!) Thanks Dusti. Yes, that would be good. I'm effectively off-wiki for the rest of this month (just dropped in today to see if there was anything on my talkpage that needed a response!), and won't be on ACC again until at least early-mid February. Yunshui  13:11, 15 January 2015 (UTC)

Adjusting pilot start date - WP:Co-op

Hello Yunshui,

I'll be putting out a formal update sometime soon, but I wanted to inform you that I've decided to push our start date back to mid-February rather than in January. There are number of reasons for this, but the biggest factor is that we are now facing the hard work of implementing our designs on the Mediawiki interface. It's a limiting environment to work with from a web-building perspective, and the team that worked on the Teahouse can offer similar testimonials to these challenges. We also want to make sure there is time for us and for you to test the environment out, ask questions at our project's talk page, and give us a little time to make any last changes before we start inviting editors to the space. If some of you know you will be unavailable during this time, it's totally fine if you need to bow out for the pilot. But we do need all the mentors we can get, so even if you can take the time to mentor just one or two editors, that would be fantastic.
Thanks a bunch, I, JethroBT drop me a line on behalf of Wikipedia:Co-op.

Hi AtomsOrSystems. Much as I'd like to help, I've got a lot on in real life and am still playing catch-up with ArbCom matters from the start of the year - I honestly don't think I'm in a position to provide much in the way of mentorshiip or training at the moment. Problem is, I have Writ Keeper's fabulously useful diff preview script active - but the link for that is right next to the rollback link... WP:Co-op news for December 2014 – Feburary 2015

Hey Yunshui, it's been a while. The Co-op team has been hard at work during over the winter, so let's get right into what's been happening:

Landing page draft. You know it's a draft when you need to squint at the logo, ha ha.
  • Graphic design work is nearing completion and development work is coming along slowly but surely. The main components of the space, profiles, the landing page, and the mentor landing page have all been built, and we're basically just putting the pieces together. We have close-to-final draft of the landing page, which is currently at User:Slalani/Landing_page, and in the thumbnail to the right. You can check out other components over at User:Slalani if you're curious. Soni, Slalani, and I are working together on some of the front page elements. We've also been doing some testing on test.wikipedia.org for profile building and matching. If you're curious about checking that out, let me know.
  • We've finished up a survey for newer editors to assess their experiences of using existing help spaces (e.g. Reference Desk, Teahouse, IRC, The Wikipedia Adventure) on en.wikipedia. Gabrielm199 is putting together a summary of that survey, and in the meantime, some findings from that survey of 45 newer editors include:
    • On average, editors found contributing to Wikipedia to be easier after using the help space compared to before.
      • However, after using one or more help spaces, only half of editors reported that editing, addressing social challenges, and resolving technical issues were easy or very easy. The other half of editors were either neutral, or reported that these matters were difficult or very difficult.
    • Just under 30% (11 of 38 editors) of newer editors said they probably would have stopped editing entirely had they not received support from the help space they used.
    • Editors frequently reported either 1) that they would not have been learn what they needed without the help space, or 2) That they could have found it, but admitted that it would have been difficult or taken much longer.
  • We will be making one final move of the pilot start date to March 4th, 2015. This is the last move (I promise), because we can't afford to run the pilot any later than that. So there it is: March 4th or bust! But we won't bust, because there are just a few things left on our plate before we can run our pilot successfully. I'll be alerting you about when you will be able to make mentor profiles soon, so when you get a message about that, please take a minute or two to create your profile here (otherwise, you won't get matched to any editors!).

Thanks to all of the new mentors who have joined over the past few months. Big thanks to Missvain to posting about our little project here to the gendergap-l mailing list. I, JethroBT drop me a line 00:47, 13 February 2015 (UTC) on behalf of Wikipedia:Co-op.

My English is not good, can you Instead me repeated vandalism to WP:AIV , Thank you very much ViPremierce (talk) 13:37, 13 February 2015 (UTC)

To be honest, I would say what you have there is a content dispute, rather than vandalism. You need to discuss the issues with User:Uaat in the first instance - it doesn't look as though you've tried to do this anywhere. After that, if you are unable to come to a consensus, I would recommend you follow the process at dispute resolution. Both of you, however, need to stop edit warring across the encyclopedia. You may want to discuss this at the Taiwan WikiProject as well. Yunshui  13:42, 13 February 2015 (UTC)

Hi. I believe the G11 speedy deletion tag I placed at The Non-Curse of Ham was valid: "'Promotion' does not necessarily mean commercial promotion: anything can be promoted, including a person, a non-commercial organization, a point of view, etc." The entire thrust of the article is to push a point of view. —Largo Plazo (talk) 09:34, 17 February 2015 (UTC)

I think this one could have gone either way - while it states a point of view, I'd hesitate to say that it promotes it, although I can certainly see where you're coming from. I'd have no objection if you want to re-add the CSD tag as well as the PROD, so that another admin can assess it as well. Yunshui  12:16, 17 February 2015 (UTC)

Hello Y. I know that you responded to this editors unblock request recently. I wanted to let you know that they removed your response here. I don't think that they did so maliciously - it looks more like a WP:COMPETENCE issue to me. It may not be important in the grand scheme of things but I did want to make you aware of it since you might not have that editors talk page on your watchlist. Best regards. @Davey2010: No, you did everything right - the problem was that the poster itself was a copyright violation (i.e. the violation was committed by the film production company, not by you). The takedown was requested via OTRS; since there were legal implications I felt that removing the image was the most straightforward course of action. Definitely no criticism of your actions intended, and I apologise for not thinking to notify you in the first place. Yunshui  21:30, 19 February 2015 (UTC)

Playing football?

Hi Yunshui, I've landed on your page, cap in hand as usual, as you seem to be about at the moment! I'm unsure of the best action to take with the situation at Kirkwall Ba game. There seems to have been a slow edit war going on for some time with what is likely the use of several accounts; Bbb23 blocked a couple of accounts: Speakingthetruth7877, Themanwhoknows1, Elliotness1] etc and looking at the article history, the latest player may be the same? I managed to find some refs for the article and the editor has received a couple of warnings on their talk page. I added another warning this morning. Is there anything further I should do? Sheesh, I don't even know why I got involved in this - football isn't even something I know about! SagaciousPhil - Chat 10:54, 23 February 2015 (UTC)

So obvious I didn't even bother with a checkuser - I've naturally blocked the new account as yet another sock. Since this doesn't seem to be going away I've also semi-protected the article for a bit as well. Good spot, but there's nothing else you (or I) need to do here - which is a relief, since I probably know even less about football than you do! Yunshui  12:15, 23 February 2015 (UTC)
Thank you, your help is, as always, much appreciated! SagaciousPhil - Chat 13:03, 23 February 2015 (UTC)
Not that I'm competitive or anything, but I think I should win the trophy for the person who knows the least about football. Ask Drmies who knows everything about everything.--Bbb23 (talk) 00:19, 24 February 2015 (UTC)
Bless your heart, Bbb. Hey, I just cleared the CSD spam log, and just about every one of 'em (some 30 in all) came with a block and a block notice as well. I should get today's RSI trophy. Please have a look at Softlavender's request on my talk page--I need coffee and to get away from this screen. Drmies (talk) 00:36, 24 February 2015 (UTC)

3R rule

Hi Yunshui greetings and nice picture on profile :) , how to deal with 3 reverts rule please check here Shrikanthv (talk) 09:07, 25 February 2015 (UTC)

Start with a talkpage warning, which I see you've already done. If they persist to the point of 3RR you can report them to WP:3RN, but be aware that as you are not reverting blatant vandalism or BLP violations, your own conduct will also be subject to scrutiny. I've left them a welcome message alerting them to WP:V; this is a new editor who may not be aware of our policies. Yunshui  09:12, 25 February 2015 (UTC)
and how treat this article ? here and seems his websites asks people visit wiki to know more about him ! ( I do not know if its was of legitimising things !) here Shrikanthv (talk) 09:17, 25 February 2015 (UTC)
I thought about taking the editing knife to it, but it needs an axe - I've removed it under G11. The guy may just about meet notability, but the whole thing needs to be rewritten from scratch - and not by its original author

WP:Co-op: Presentation at Wikimania 2015

Hey Yunshui. I've put in a submission for a presentation at Wikimania 2015 called Is Two the Magic Number?: The Co-op and New Editor Engagement through Mentorship. I'll be talking about the state of finding help spaces on en.wiki and how our new mentorship space, The Co-op, factors into that picture. Reviewing will begin soon and I'll need your help to be able to present our work. Please review our proposal and give us feedback. If you would be interested in seeing this presentation, whether you are attending or not, please add your name to the signup at the bottom of the proposal (you do not need to attend Wikimania to express interest in presentations). I, JethroBT drop me a line on behalf of Wikipedia:Co-op.

Request to Read and Resolve My Query

Hello Mate

Today, after 4 month survival on wikipedia, my page having URL: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suvigya_Sharma get deleted. It was really very shocking for me after reading "promotional material". Suvigya Sharma is my brother and he is renowned artist who got lots of national and international prize for his great artistic work. According to Wikipedia policy i had not put any promotional links instead i had kept links of renowned news channels in reference section which is supported by Wikipedia.

Even my page was patrolled by Wikipedia Team with green signal "Suvigya Sharma was patrolled by DragonflySixtyseven". It's not my intention to force you to change your decision after all you are senior authority of this prestigious online media. However as a user its my curiosity to know what is basic reason or where i lack.

I dare to post the short bio of my brother as i read several biography for renowned people. That's the main reason behind the publishing not for any promotion.

Thanks in Advance for your generous support. I am waiting for precious support which resolve my curiosity.

I see that it has now been restored in draft format by another administrator, so you can continue working on it. Some suggestions, however:
  • Phrases like, "He holds expertise," "He practises both religiously," "renounced miniature Artist [sic, I assume you meant 'renowned']," "he is also very passionate towards arts," "from an artistic family," "He had a wonderful childhood," "his talented and visionary father" - I could go on, but hopefully you get the gist - are completely inappropriate for an encyclopedia. Wikipedia articles should strive for neutrality - that means no laudatory language praising the subject, his work or his family.
  • Sources are everything - most of this article is completely unsourced. Since you are related to the subject, I assume that the information about his life is drawn from personal knowledge; that is not acceptable here. If the information has not been previously published in reliable, third party sources, it does not belong on Wikipedia.
  • On a related note, since you are related to the subject, you have a severe conflict of interest with Wikipedia in writing about him. As such, you shoudl not be the person to create the article - a more appropriate venue for you would be Request articles, where you can ask someone else, who does not have a personal investment in presenting the subject in a positive light, to create the article.
  • The article has a mass of inappropriate external links; these need to be removed. With the exception of Mr Sharma's own official website, none of the external links meet Wikipedia's requirements.
I would strongly suggest at this point that you recuse yourself from the article entirely, and instead request that the editing community work on it on your behalf. It is very clear from the fact that you are not able to see the issues with this article that you are not capable of writing appropriately on the subject. You should absolutely avoid moving it back into mainspace again yourself. Yunshui  08:39, 26 February 2015 (UTC)

Essay

As you informed that a blog and an essay are different: did that means that at any cost, an essay on Wikipedia must be wrote in neutral context? thanks~"aGastya" ✉ let’s talk about it :) 09:23, 26 February 2015 (UTC)

They don't have to meet the requirements of WP:NPOV (although policies like WP:BLP and WP:NPA still apply), but they need to be about Wikipedia in some way. In other words, you can write an essay on why you think the deletion process is biased and wrong and should be more democratic, but you can't write about how your local political system is biased and wrong and should be more democratic. I'd recommend reading some of the examples listed in Category:User essays to get a feel for the sort of writing and subject matter involved. Yunshui  10:13, 26 February 2015 (UTC)

thank you for the information! ~"aGastya" ✉ let’s talk about it :) 10:32, 26 February 2015 (UTC)

Thanks! and one more problem oops!

Hi Yunshui was following an article for some time and also nominated it for deletion ones (it survived), it seems the article qoutes various famous people sources to put across its own agenda ( never was a suggestion by famous people) , countered the page creator allways comes out saying you guys are against new "western" veiw of the subject something like this ! but the real matter was the subject itself , how to deal with such matter ?

Shrikanthv (talk) 14:30, 25 February 2015 (UTC)

Um... which article? Hypothetical situations are all very well, but if you can tell me which article you're referring to I can give you a better-than-hypothetical answer. Yunshui  14:31, 25 February 2015 (UTC)

:) here
Well, it needs a substantial trim to get rid of the quotebombing - we simply don't use quotations like that in an encyclopedia - but beyond that I don't see much of an issue with it; it's been written about enough to be notable and the content is, whilst heavy on the jargon, fairly neutral as far as I can acertain actually there does seem to be a bit of undue weight given to criticism from other religious systems, so that could be looked at. What exactly is the problem you're having with the page? Yunshui  14:54, 25 February 2015 (UTC)
Hi yunshui, there is some arbitration going on the creator already I think I will wait it out till its completed before changing anything Shrikanthv (talk) 06:52, 27 February 2015 (UTC)

Tjuan Benafactor

Why did you delete the Tjuan Benafactor page as I was still creating it — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jholky (talkcontribs) 15:53, 26 February 2015 (UTC)

I deleted it over an hour after your initial creation of the page. It contained no third-party reliable sources, and was excessively promotional in tone. The deletion criteria used were A7 and 11.
It also appears from your contributions that you have some sort of personal or professional relationshiop with the subject; you should therefore familiarise yourself with Wikipedia's conflict of interest guidelines and be aware that undisclosed paid editing is a violation of Wikipedia's Terms of Use (and is therefore grounds for blocking your account). Co-op: Mentor profiles and final pilot prep

Hey mentors, two announcements:

  1. You can now make your profile at The Co-op! Please set up your mentor profile here as soon as you are able, as the pilot begins on March 4th. It isn't very involved and should only take a minute. If you need more info about what the different skills mean (e.g. writing, communication), please refer to these descriptions.
  2. Profile creation, invitations, and automated matching of editors, profile creation, that will be coordinated through HostBot and a few gadgets may not be ready for our pilot, and will have to be done manually until they are ready. In preparation for the pilot, please read over these instructions on how we will be manually performing these tasks until the automated components are ready. I, JethroBT drop me a line on behalf of Wikipedia:Co-op.

You're Welcome (for help with the numbering)[edit]

Yunshui - you're quite welcome; and I'm happy to report that I'm not an IP editor, but rather a full-fledged editor in good standing. In fact, my username is my true full name - Dave Peters.

I think my "loss of identity" occurs thusly: I have a "watch" on the page in question for which I receive e-mail updates following a change of any sort to the page. When such an e-mail arrives, I have three links from which to choose for the page "on watch": one for the current version of the page, and two related to changes. When I select one of the links, I'm taken to the appropriate destination without having to log in, and must've forgotten to do so before helping with the numbering.

It's fascinating to watch a Wiki arbitration unfold.

Wikibreak

I need help. i am on wikibreak as my important exams for academic part are going on. And as per Wikipedia; school is more important than itself: but i am helpless. I can't stop myself from clicking Edit! And I guess I must not be editing much till 23rd March, when exams would finish. But I find myself editing it more and more! Please help me to take a perfect decision.

help

Hi yunshui, how to treat the article like this here ?, and seems one closer is involved like this here , I see that an admin is already involved in the mess ? I have not seen that wiki is against such "promotional" managers of online content? Shrikanthv (talk) 06:38, 4 March 2015 (UTC)

I've given the account a short block, but I don't see much of a future for them on Wikipedia - it's pretty clearly an SPA whose only intent here is to whitewash the article. I'm not making any changes to the article itself, but you should feel free to do so. Yunshui  08:41, 4 March 2015 (UTC)
