The state of New Hampshire began requiring its citizens to register their vehicles and display license plates on their cars in 1905.

1949-1979 county codes

New Hampshire has 10 counties (see List of counties in New Hampshire). From 1949 to 1979, the two letters on passenger plates represented the county in which the vehicle was registered as follows:[4]
