For profit?
What is type of company/organization is chessgames.com? For-profit? Non-profit organization? Something else? Peter Ballard (talk) 00:51, 5 January 2009 (UTC)
Separate page for each game
As for now, the following can be read under section "Database": "Each game on ChessGames.com is hosted on a separate web page to allow internal and external weblinks to that particular game."
Although I understand the idea and I can see how someone could be led to believe this, this is actually false. This is called server-side scripting. Basically, there is only one page -- index.pl under /perl/chessgame/ -- which requires a game ID as an argument that is relayed to the web server, interpreted by the perl interpreter, and rendered properly when ready to be sent to the user.
Ultimately, this means that there is only one page, and that this page is rendered differently every time an argument (a game ID in this case) is given.
What is true about this, though, is that along with every game in their database there is a table or a different database altogether that is used to properly stock kibitzes (and whatever needs to be stocked and that is specific for each game).
So basically here's how it goes: on the server, there is a database, which contains 1) the games, and 2) the kibitzes for each game. When a request is sent to the web server, the server fetches the right game along with its kibitzes, renders the webpage properly using the perl interpreter, and sends it back to the HTTP server, which is then viewed by the user "as is".
Thus, only one page for all games.
