The Kansas City Area Transportation Authority (KCATA) is a public transit agency in metropolitan Kansas City. It operates the Metro Area Express (MAX) bus rapid transit service in Kansas City, Missouri, and 69 local bus routes in seven counties of Missouri and Kansas.

The KCATA is a bi-state agency formed by an interstate compact between Kansas and Missouri in 1965–6. Authorized by both states' legislatures and an act of Congress,[1] the agency's jurisdiction includes Cass, Clay, Jackson and Platte counties in Missouri and Johnson, Leavenworth and Wyandotte counties in Kansas. The agency is governed by a board of ten commissioners, five from each state.[2] Operations began in 1969, when the KCATA took over bus routes previously run by the Kansas City Public Service Company.

Fares

Fares are valid as of March 2009 and remain current as of July 2014.[3]

One way fares

See interchangeability notes for exceptions.

$1.50 full fare (75¢ reduced fare) for routes in Missouri: Gladstone, Kansas City, Independence and Raytown. In Kansas (except on The JO routes): Johnson county and Wyandotte county (KCK)

$3 full fare ($1.50 reduced fare) for 152 Lee's Summit/Raytown Express and 170 Blue Springs Express.

$3 full fare ($1.50 reduced) 434 (34X) Liberty/ Shoal Creek Express.

25¢ for trips solely within North Kansas City.

Monthly passes

Monthly passes are valid for 31 consecutive days and are not based on calendar months. Activation begins on first use in Fare box.

$50 full and $25 reduced for regular and express service.

$95 full (no reduced) fare for 69X, 152 and 170.

See interchangeability below for exceptions.

Day pass

$3, expires at midnight, cannot be used with transfer or on 152, 170 or 69X. See interchangeability below.

Visitor pass

$10, good for three consecutive days, available online at KCATA website only.

Note: day passes are $3 per same day purchased at the fare box, skipping pre-order allows more flexibility and cost savings. You have more control on how many days you purchase and days do not need to be consecutive. Keep in mind, Weekend services are reduced.

Reduced fares

Reduced fares are available for children 12 to 18, seniors and people with disabilities, with a reduced fare card (preferred) or Medicare card. Children under 5 ride for free with an adult. Children ages 6 to 11 do not need a reduced fare card to qualify for reduced fare.

Pass and transfer interchangeability

The Metro monthly pass is accepted on three systems; The Metro, Inde-Bus and KCK Unified Government "The Bus".

The JO does currently accept Metro passes (day or monthly) but has its own monthly pass which covers all four systems as well.

The KCK Unified Government "The Bus" accepts transfers and monthly passes issued by the Metro but does NOT accept day passes.

In some cases you can use a Metro issued transfer to board a "The JO bus", mainly when origination is in Kansas City MO, thereafter a new fare must be purchased.

Routes

This is a list of current routes,[4] but service cutbacks are due to be implemented at the end of June 2009.[5]

Max busses and 22 other busses provide WiFi service.

Bus rapid transit

Bus rapid transit premiered with the Metro Area Express in July 2005. It is about 12-mile (19 km) linking the River Market, Downtown, Crown Center and the Plaza Area. The first BRT Line is in service on Main Street. The next BRT Line is the 13-mile (21 km) Troost Avenue which started service on January 1, 2011. The next BRT line which is being proposed is along the Prospect Ave corridor. If appproved the line would start service around 2017-2019.
