Joo Hyun-Mi (Hangul: 주현미, Hanja: 周炫美, born 27 September 1961 in lunar calendar) or Chou Hsuan Mei is a Korean trot singer and pharmacist. She is a popular singer in South Korea in the 80-90's generation. She is the daughter of Chinese father Zhou Jinfu and a Korean mother [citation needed]. She is the eldest daughter of four siblings in her family. She has been to China several times to perform, especially her singles "Yong Dongqiao Rain", "Unrequited Love", "New Sand Hole That Man", "Wait a Little," became widely popular. She has more than 50 albums. [citation needed]

Early life

Joo Hyun-Mi was born to hwagyo parents who lived in Gwangju, South Korea. She visited Hanseung Hwagyo High school, then studied Pharmacy in Jung-Ang University in Seoul. As a child she's been said that she had a talent to imitate Korean Gayo singer, above all I Mi-Ja; she amused relatives and neighbors by imitated songs. In 1981 she, as a member of a university vocal group, attended in 'MBC-Riverside' music festival and received a prize of encouragement. After university study, she opened a drug store. A friend of her father recommended her to sing a number of cover songs of various trot singers. So she launched into popular music business. Though she was de facto a 'nobody' in this branch, her discs, so-called 'Pair-Party Trot Medley'(쌍쌍파티) had success extraordinarily. This compilation was shrouded in legend so that lots of truck drivers brought song tape and heard her cover songs on the road. She debuted officially in 1985 with the first album Binaerineun Yeongdonggyo (비 내리는 영동교, The rainy Yeongdonggyo Bridge).[1]

Personal life

Joo Hyun-Mi married husband Lim Dong-Shin in 1988.[2]

Education

She graduated from Seoul Overseas Chinese High School,[citation needed] and received her Bachelor of Pharmacy from Chung-Ang University.[3]

Career

She was awarded the Female Rookie of the Year by KBS and MBC in the year of her debut.[4]

Her second album, Joo Hyun-Mi 2 was the 1988 Golden Disk Awards Disk Daesang (Album of the Year). [citation needed]

On February 17, 2009, Joo Hyun-Mi sang a duet with Girls' Generation member Seohyun (feat. Davichi) called "JjaRaJaJja" (Korean: "짜라자짜").[5] The song earned a nomination from the 2009 M.net Asian Music Awards for Trot Music of the Year.

She was also involved in filmography which included Korean variety shows, radio and commercials.[6]
