On 15 September 2017, at around 8:20 am BST (07:20 UTC), an explosion occurred on a District line train at Parsons Green tube station, in London, England. Twenty-nine people were treated in hospital or an urgent care centre, mostly for burn injuries.[2][3] The incident is being treated by the Metropolitan Police as a terrorist attack.[3] It is the fifth terrorist attack to occur on British soil in 2017.
Background
Several terrorist attacks had occurred in Britain in the months preceding the bombing, including the March Westminster attack, the May Manchester attack, the June London Bridge, the Buckingham Palace and Finsbury Park attacks.[4]
Attack
The attack occurred on an eastbound District line train at Parsons Green tube station, in West London.[5] The blast sent a fireball through the rear carriage of the packed rush-hour train. Numerous passengers were reported to have suffered flash burns. Others received crush injuries in the rush to leave the scene. Twenty-nine people received medical treatment for their injuries.[1]
The bomber had placed the device in a white plastic bucket inside a shopping bag, according to images and videos posted on social media just after the attack. Wires were visible hanging out, as well as a black towel. Reports also indicate the device had a timer attached.[6]
Investigation
The British Transport Police are currently leading investigation of the attack.[7] According to the London police, "hundreds of detectives" are involved in investigation into the incident.[8] Lidl pledged to assist the police in their investigation; one of its shopping bags was used to hold the bomb.[9] The Metropolitan Police have launched a massive manhunt for one, possibly two, suspects.[10]
Reactions
In a statement after the incident, British Prime Minister Theresa May said: "My thoughts are with those injured at Parsons Green and the emergency services who, once again, are responding swiftly and bravely to a suspected terrorist incident."[11]
Mayor of London Sadiq Khan said: "Our city utterly condemns the hideous individuals who attempt to use terror to harm us and destroy our way of life. As London has proven again and again, we will never be intimidated or defeated by terrorism. I am in close contact with the Metropolitan Police, Transport for London (TfL), Government and other emergency services who are responding at the scene and leading the investigation. I will be attending the emergency COBRA meeting in Whitehall this afternoon with the Prime Minister. My sincere gratitude goes to all our courageous emergency responders and the TfL staff who were first on the scene. I urge all Londoners to remain calm and vigilant, and to check TfL’s website for travel advice."[12] Mr Khan also took the opportunity to criticise the Government for inadequate police resources in the capital. He said: "I am not going to apologise for saying we need more resources and more police in London." [13]
Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson advised: "My information is limited and it’s important not to speculate. Everybody should keep calm and go about their lives in a normal way, as normal as they possibly can. I understand the British Transport Police and TfL are on it and they will be updating their website as and when we have more information."[14]
Subsequently, the Joint Terrorism Analysis Centre decided to raise the terror level from 'Severe' to 'Critical'.[15]
Impact
There was no service on the District line between Earl's Court and Wimbledon after the attack.[16]

The bleak assessment appears to be widely shared after a stream of terror attacks striking Westminster, Manchester, London Bridge, Finsbury Park, Buckingham Palace and now Parsons Green.
