Royal Rumble (2018) is an upcoming professional wrestling pay-per-view (PPV) event and WWE Network event produced by WWE for the Raw and SmackDown brands. It will take place on January 28, 2018, at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.[1] It will be the thirty-first event under the Royal Rumble chronology and the first to feature a Women's Royal Rumble match.[2]
Background
The card will feature matches resulting from scripted storylines that have results predetermined by WWE on both the Raw and SmackDown brands.[3][4] Storylines are produced on WWE's weekly television shows, Monday Night Raw, SmackDown Live, and 205 Live, the latter of which is cruiserweight-exclusive.[5][6] As is tradition, the card will be highlighted by the 30-man Royal Rumble match, in which the winner earns a world championship match at WrestleMania 34 for either Raw's Universal Championship or SmackDown's WWE Championship. The event will also host the first-ever women's Royal Rumble match, in which the winner will earn a women's championship match at WrestleMania 34 for either the Raw Women's Championship or SmackDown Women's Championship.[7][2]
On the December 18, 2017 edition of Raw, Elias became the first wrestler to announce his participation in the men's Royal Rumble match.[7]
On the December 18, 2017 episode of Raw, after a six woman tag team match between the team of Sasha Banks, Bayley, and Mickie James and Absolution (Paige, Mandy Rose, and Sonya Deville) ended in disqualification and a brawl ensued with the rest of the Raw women's roster (Alicia Fox, Asuka, Nia Jax, Dana Brooke, and Raw Women's Champion Alexa Bliss), Raw Commissioner Stephanie McMahon came out and the brawl stopped. Stephanie recapped the leaps that women's wrestling had taken the past few years, going from a revolution to an evolution of women's wrestling, including the Divas division becoming the Women's division, the first-ever women's Hell in a Cell match at Hell in a Cell 2016 (which was also the first time women were the main event of a WWE pay-per-view), the first-ever women's Money in the Bank ladder match at Money in the Bank 2017, the first-ever women's match in Abu Dhabi, and women competing in the main events of Raw and SmackDown. She then announced the first-ever women's Royal Rumble match for the 2018 Royal Rumble with the winner receiving a match at WrestleMania 34 for either the Raw Women's Championship or SmackDown Women's Championship.[7] The next day on the December 19, 2017 episode of SmackDown, Naomi announced her participation in the match.[8]
On the October 16, 2017 episode of Raw, Kane, who was last seen in December 2016, returned during the main event steel cage match between Roman Reigns and Braun Strowman and helped Strowman defeat Reigns. Kane was then added to The Miz's team, which included Strowman, at TLC: Tables, Ladders & Chairs in the 5-on-3 handicap Tables, Ladders, and Chairs match.[9] During the match, Strowman accidentally hit Kane with a chair, which caused Kane to later turn on him in the match and crushed him in the back of a garbage truck; their team ultimately lost.[10] The following night on Raw, Kane said that he had heard about how powerful Strowman was and wanted to see it for himself, but was not impressed, and that was why he turned on him.[11] Strowman returned on the October 30 episode,[12] and over the next few weeks, the two went back and forth attacking each other, which caused a scheduled match between the two for the November 13 episode to not happen, and Strowman performed a Running Powerslam on Kane through the ring.[13] This lead to another match between the two on the December 11 episode to determine the number one contender against Brock Lesnar for the Universal Championship at the Royal Rumble. The match ended in a double countout, but the two continued to fight until Strowman executed a Running Powerslam on Kane through a table. It was announced that Lesnar would return to Raw the following week to address the situation.[14] That episode, as Raw General Manager Kurt Angle was about to address who would face the Universal Champion at the Royal Rumble, he was interrupted by Strowman, Kane, and Lesnar along with his advocate Paul Heyman. Angle scheduled a triple threat match between the three for the Universal Championship at the Royal Rumble. Afterwards, a brawl broke out between the three that ended with Lesnar giving Kane an F-5. As Lesnar celebrated on the entrance ramp, Kane sat up to the surprise of Lesnar and Heyman.[7]
