The Exercise Class ident

The BBC One 'Oneness' idents are a set of on-screen channel identities used on BBC One from 1 January 2017 to present. The idents feature groups of people doing activities in everyday life, with the aim of the showing them coming together in these various ways. The logo is now placed at the bottom of the screen instead of the middle.

Launch

Street photographer Martin Parr was commissioned by BBC One to create the idents.[1] The 'Oneness' theme had first been exhibited the previous Christmas for the channel's identity, hence giving the impression that those idents ultimately served as a preview to the new look that made its full launch on New Year's Day 2017. Around 24 idents are expected to be filmed, which will be gradually introduced one by one over the course of the first year.[2] More idents are expected to be produced throughout 2018.

This is the first set of idents that have been produced with the input of BBC Creative, a new in house creative agency responsible for BBC presentation.

Components of look

Each ident begins with a tagline showing who the people are and what they are doing, and the location of where the ident is filmed. At the bottom of the screen, the word 'Oneness' is drawn up before fading into the BBC One logo. Programme trailers retain the same look and design of the previous 'Circle' era, except the endboards now consist of a plain red background as opposed to a one with a circular design as before. Some of the idents also seem to have been inspired/ echo the themes of the past 'Rhythm and Movement' ones from before the 'Circle' Era. End credits promotional material is changed.

Reception

The idents received overwhelmingly negative reception from viewers.[18][19] Many criticised the lack of creativity and thought put in the idents, as the set conveyed a still photograph, leading to derision for its bland presentation.

The lack of a distinctive soundtrack or a symbol was also noted, and some viewers believed that the Sea Swimmers ident was not suitable for the news or serious programming. (This was rectified with the introduction of Birdwatchers in March). Other criticisms include the lack of consistent branding devices (trail endboards in particular were a hungover from the previous set), and production values were seen as poor, due to the shaky camera and no post processing work. The local news slide on BBC One HD was also seen to be far too intrusive and loud before it was edited in March 2017.

Initially, further criticism was aimed at the fact that the BBC launched the new look with only 2 idents; this was allayed with the launches of Mountain Rescue and Wheelchair Rugby Team.[citation needed]

With the introduction of Skaters and Birdwatchers in March 2017, changes were made to make the idents much less awkward, with the people featured continuing their activities after posing for the camera and a glow effect was added to the Oneness logo. However, some viewers have claimed that these changes were marginal at best, and major issues still persisted.

As of 2018, new variations of the idents have been added featuring groups from different parts of the United Kingdom, however these have still came under fire from the majority of viewers [citation needed], facing heavy criticism online [citation needed].
