Advanced Rocket Research Center (ARRC; Chinese: 國立交通大學前瞻火箭研究中心) is a Taiwanese space transport research organization headquartered at National Chiao Tung University in Hsinchu City, Taiwan, with a research focus in hybrid rockets.[1][2][3] Founded in April 2012, AARC is supported by research grants and private donors through crowdsourcing platforms.[4][5]

Introduction

ARRC is jointly organized by multiple universities in Taiwan. It was established at National Chiao Tung University in June 2012 and funded by corporate and private donations.

The main participants include Distinguished Professor Jong-Shinn Wu, Professor Tsung-Lin Chen from National Chiao Tung University, Associate Professor Ming-Tzu Ho from National Cheng Kung University, Professor Hui-Wen Hu from National Pingtung University of Science and Technology, Professor Hsin-Piao Lin from National Taipei University of Technology, Assistant Professor Jen-Perng Yu from Ming Chuan University, and Assistant Professor Juan-Chen Haung from National Taiwan Ocean University. Jong-Shinn Wu is now the chairman of the group.

Launches

On 24 March 2014, ARRC test launched the HTTP-3S rocket near the coastlines of Pingtung County. The HTTP-3S rocket was one of the largest hybrid sounding rockets launched by civilians in Taiwan, with a length of 6.35 m, a diameter of 0.4 m, and a weight of 300 kg. It was propelled by a multi-cluster vortex mixed booster hybrid engine which employed nitrous oxide as oxidizer. The engine was capable of delivering 1,000 kgf thrust (with Isp up to 250 seconds). The goal of the HTTP-3S launch campaign was to test functions of all subsystems during the drastic high-speed flight scenario. The flight data gathered during the successful test launch will be used for the second stage rocket design of future dual-stage sounding rockets and the validation of launch site safety measures.[6][7][8][9][10]

On 18 April 2015, ARRC test launched the APPL-9β sounding rocket at the Siangshan Wetland in Hsinchu City. The APPL-9β rocket was propelled by a solid state fuel in the first stage and a hybrid fuel in the second stage. The casing was made of a PLA material by 3D printing. The rocket carried a test satellite made by National Central University.[11]

Test Projects

APPL series

The APPL rocket adopted solid sugar rocket engine as the propellant. It is a kind of solid rocket made with sugar as a fuel and containing an oxidizer. This type of rockets are also known as sugar rocket. APPL is named after the Aerothermal & Plasma Physics Laboratory in National Chiao Tung University, which began to develop and manufacture small rockets under the leadership of Professor Jong-Shinn Wu in 2007. Because the sugar rocket is safe and easy to manufacture, and also produce less pollution, it thus became the first rocket made by the group.

Since ARRC was formally established in 2012, APPL rockets have been used in tests of several secondary systems of large rocket, so that the systems can be applied to the HTTP Hybrid Rocket.
