KNBN, virtual and UHF digital channel 21, is an NBC-affiliated television station licensed to Rapid City, South Dakota, United States. Owned by Jim Simpson's Rapid Broadcasting, it is a sister station to MyNetworkTV affiliate KWBH-LP, channel 27 (which is simulcast on KNBN's second digital subchannel). The two stations share studios on South Plaza Drive in Rapid City; KNBN's transmitter is located on Cowboy Hill west of downtown.

KNBN can also be seen on translators KKRA-LP (analog channel 24) in Rapid City and K35MW-D (digital channel 35) in Lead (also serving the Black Hills region).

History

The station signed on the air on May 14, 2000, replacing both KEVN (which served as the region's NBC affiliate before switching to Fox in July 1996) and KNBN-LP (which had served as an NBC affiliate since 1998, but was not carried by any cable providers due to its limited broadcasting radius). After KEVN switched to Fox and prior to KNBN's upgrade into a full-power station, Denver NBC affiliate KUSA was carried by all major cable providers as the network's affiliate of record in the Black Hills region. Despite transmitting its signal on UHF channel 21, KNBN identifies as NewsCenter1 on-air, an artifact of when the main cable systems in the market carried the station on Channel 1, which today is usually used solely to provide a slot for video on demand services, barker channels or electronic program guide services. Currently, KNBN is carried on most local cable systems on channel 10, though it retains the NewsCenter1 branding.

Digital television

Digital channels

The station's digital signal is multiplexed:

Channel Video Aspect PSIP Short Name Programming12
21.1 1080i 16:9 KNBNNBC Main KNBN programming / NBC
21.2 720p KNBN MY Simulcast of KWBH-LP / MyNetworkTV

Analog-to-digital conversion

KNBN shut down its analog signal, over UHF channel 21, on February 1, 2009, and "flash-cut" its digital signal into operation on channel 21.[1][2] The "flash-cut" was necessary as the station had its original construction permit granted after the FCC finalized the DTV allotment plan on April 27, 1997; as a result, the station did not have a companion channel for a digital signal.

News operation

KNBN presently broadcasts 16 hours of locally produced newscasts each week (with 3 hours each weekday and a half-hour each on Saturdays and Sundays).
