The name Tyllgoed, meaning "dark wood" goes back to the 15th C. In more recent times Fairwater men of the 1930's were employed by the Plymouth estates. and restricted by their employer to just two pints of beer, Fairwater Brook was a childhood haunt of Roald Dahl, who went to school in nearby Llandaff. Fairwater Park, known locally as "The Dell" was the site of one of Britain's first artificial ski-slopes, and is still a pleasant recreational area.

Famous people with Fairwater links also include swimmer Martin Woodroffe, a Canton High School pupil who won silver at the 1968 Olympics, and Welsh language poet Nesta Wyn Jones,(Mrs Llwyd) former Welsh language teacher at Peter Lea Junior School in Fairwater.
