"Eolgi" vandal - global lock request?
Howdy, I saw you blocked our good friend the Eolgi vandal (as User:Halloween.eolgi). It looks like they also vandalized eswiki and simplewiki, would you mind requesting a global lock on them on met? I'm not autoconfirmed there on this account so I can't post the request myself. Thanks! creffpublic a creffett franchise (talk to the boss) 15:01, 31 October 2019 (UTC)

" Even if what Andy Dingley says above weren't true, "
How about you just get the f*ck off my back? Andy Dingley (talk) 23:21, 1 November 2019 (UTC)
- @Andy Dingley: I think you are misreading that. I literally said what you said was true; the statement was made just to help the OP by providing additional points that needed to be made. That is, what the phrase "Even if..." means here is that "What Andy has said is quite true, but let's put that aside for a minute, and also look at some additional points." I hope that is clearer. --Jayron32 12:59, 4 November 2019 (UTC)
- So why even bother saying it? Can you not even agree with me for once without casting aspersions? Andy Dingley (talk) 13:01, 4 November 2019 (UTC)
- @Andy Dingley: It's not an aspersion. I have not cast any aspersions against you, here or elsewhere, at this time or previously. As I explained just now, there was no harm or aspersion meant. You are perfectly, 100% correct in your answer, and at no point did I say that you weren't. I said you were correct, but I provided some additional information to support your correct answer. --Jayron32

- An RfC was closed with the consensus that the resysop criteria should be made stricter.
- The follow-up RfC to develop that change is now open at Wikipedia:Requests for comment/2019 Resysop Criteria (2).
- A related RfC is seeking the community's sentiment for a binding desysop procedure.
- Eligible editors may now nominate themselves as candidates for the 2019 Arbitration Committee Elections. The self-nomination period will close November 12, with voting running from November 19 through December 2.
It is a good article and an asset to the main page. Removing it is just petulant and over reach. 7&6=thirteen (☎) 16:54, 12 November 2019 (UTC)
- It has an unreferenced section. We're not allowed to have unreferenced sections on the main page. Either fix it or stop complaining. --Jayron32 16:58, 12 November 2019 (UTC)
- Actually, it is no longer unreferenced. You are being punitive. But I will fix it. For now. cheers. 7&6=thirteen (☎) 17:20, 12 November 2019 (UTC)

Thanks for that "Aja" edit
This. I had delinked because the guy who did the last GAR felt it wasn't necessary to link him again since he's linked in the intro just above. I have always felt that just because you link someone in the intro, it doesn't mean you can't link them anywhere else, especially the first mention in the article itself, but I wasn't going to argue the point at that time. Daniel Case (talk) 19:56, 14 November 2019 (UTC)
- I will avoid re-linking if stuff is close together, but WP:OVERLINK says "at the first occurrence after the lead" is allowable for a repeat link. --Jayron32 20:02, 14 November 2019 (UTC)
apology
Hi I’ve recently realized I was unnecessarily defensive about my knowledge and snippy replying(claiming what you said wasn’t relevant)to you at reference desk about iron atoms and what could replace them in hemoglobin. Ive realized you weren’t implying that I must not have known about the possibility of CO or CN taking the place of oxygen, you were giving interesting and related background, since RD is not just for educating the OP alone. Proposal for naming the dead
Hi. A couple of years ago I believe it was you who put forth a Village Pump proposal regarding inclusion of names of the dead. I wanted to review it; can you put your finger on it easily? ―Mandruss ☎ 13:20, 18 November 2019 (UTC)

- Sure. Well the new development is that we're seeing a high level of support at Talk:Saugus High School shooting for another shot at VP, including from a couple of admins, and admin El C suggested we work up a proposal at that article talk page. I'm working on getting that started and may have something posted within the hour. ―Mandruss ☎ 15:11, 18 November 2019 (UTC)
- So after suggesting we do it at that article, El C moved it to VPI. Go figger. ―Mandruss ☎ 16:44, 18 November 2019 (UTC)

- Sounds fair. Regarding my comment There are always those comments, but this time they include support for such a guideline from a couple of admins, which is something new., I was speaking on the article talk page specifically about comments on article talk pages in mass shooting events. ―Mandruss ☎ 16:55, 18 November 2019 (UTC)

ArbCom 2019 election voter message
Hi Jayron32. I was going to add something to this ANI, but it's been archived and I'm not sure whether it's OK to add something below the discussion. Anyway, I was just going to point out that this isn't the first questionable ANI that CentralTime301 has started at ANI; he started WP:ANI#The bot that has been removing a photo in a draft... a few days ago.
As stated in that thread, the questionable adding of uw's, etc. by CentralTime301 seems to really be starting to grate on others. In some cases, they uw may be justified, but there seem more mistakes being made than not which is starting to cause problems. Moreover, since CentralTime301 doesn't seem to be responding to any of the concerns being raised by others on their user talk page, it's hard figure out why they are doing such things. At the same time, they haven't veered from their full-speed-ahead attempts to "cleanup" Wikipedia, which is more than likely going to end up in their account being blocked for one reason or another.
Any suggestions on how to help them avoid such a thing? Not sure what else can be done here and hoped that by bringing it up for discussion at WP:ANI#CentralTime301 edits may need a closer review that CentralTime301 might take a bit of time to self-assess and slow things down a bit; it appears, bowever, that opposite has only happened and their user talk page continues to fill up with warnings to be more careful. -- Marchjuly (talk) 01:35, 20 November 2019 (UTC)
- Just going to update that the editor has been blocked for the above and other issues by a different admin. -- Marchjuly (talk) 05:58, 22 November 2019 (UTC)
Language Ref Desk
Your comment under "Capitalization of Latin titles in English texts" at "Wikipedia:Reference desk/Language" was interesting and helpful, but I'm not sure that pulling out the same pre-canned lecture every time someone asks why something in a language is the way it is accomplishes any very useful purpose... AnonMoos (talk) 23:08, 20 November 2019 (UTC)
- Sorry, I don't follow? It was the first time I ever brought up the history of capitalization, and it was directly in response to a question asked about the history of capitalizing. I've certainly never brought it up before. Can you clarify what your objection is? --Jayron32 23:51, 20 November 2019 (UTC)
- Noting that language change is arbitrary is important when people are looking for answers to the question "why" however. If you want to know "why does this happen", if the answer really is "there is no reason, and here is some more details on why there is no reason..." is a valid answer. Language change does not happen in a predictable manner. Unless you have a source to indicate that it does? Because I've never seen one. --Jayron32 12:16, 21 November 2019 (UTC)
- Well, there's Sapir's "drift" -- for example, earlier [iː] and [uː] became [aɪ] and [aʊ] in a parallel way in both English and German, but completely separately in the two different languages (cf. ice/Eis and house/Haus).
- But anyway, the main point is that when somebody asks "Why does entity X show feature Y in language Z?", then maybe the more useful reply in most cases is to explore the specificities of language Z, rather than to drag out a pre-canned generalized lecture on the arbitrariness and whimsicality of language change... Se we've got Anton1982 (talk · contribs) who implies he's the same guy as 81.131.40.58 (talk · contribs). Is there any rule against that? ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 19:22, 29 November 2019 (UTC)
- It crossed my mind that Anton edits mostly from an IP, just occasionally while logged in. There's a rule that anyone using multiple accounts is supposed to declare them. The question would be whether that rule applies in a case like this. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 01:55, 30 November 2019 (UTC)
- If he's not trying to hide it or use multiple accounts to violate rules, there's no problem.--Jayron32 20:02, 30 November 2019 (UTC)
- I don't know what his game is. He made a couple of snippy comments to me on a ref desk (under his IP) and when I responded on his IP talk page, he posted on my talk page under Anton1982 (which I was previously unaware of) and said, "don't ever PM me", whatever that means. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 22:48, 30 November 2019 (UTC)

Interface administrator changes
- An RfC on the administrator resysop criteria was closed. 18 proposals have been summarised with a variety of supported and opposed statements. The inactivity grace period within which a new request for adminship is not required has been reduced from three years to two. Additionally, Bureaucrats are permitted to use their discretion when returning administrator rights.
- Following a proposal, the edit filter mailing list has been opened up to users with the Edit Filter Helper right.
- Wikimedia projects can set a default block length for users via MediaWiki:ipb-default-expiry. A new page, MediaWiki:ipb-default-expiry-ip, allows the setting of a different default block length for IP editors. Neither is currently used. (T219126)
- Voting in the 2019 Arbitration Committee Elections is open to eligible editors until Monday 23:59, 2 December 2018 UTC. Please review the candidates and, if you wish to do so, submit your choices on the voting page.

RE: Vote X?
Yes, I'm sure. I've also developed a good sense of his writing style, and I'm surprised you don't recognize it in this case. A single post to the ref desks from one IP address is very much Vote X's MO. The IP address is in London and he frequently posts about London. It's also about that open-ended invitation to debate which is very much his style. Best wishes, --Viennese Waltz 08:10, 6 December 2019 (UTC)

How did you find those articles about Jim David? I clearly am not as good as I thought I was at google-fu because I went through multiple pages of ‘“Jim David” comedian’ and ‘“Jim David” comedy’ on google and google news and couldn’t find those articles. Any tips would be appreciated, thanks -- Bait30 Talk? 22:48, 16 December 2019 (UTC)

Obstruction of Congress
I saw that you edited Contempt of Congress to add alternate phrasing "Obstruction of Congress" this morning following President Trump's impeachment yesterday, adding it as an alternate phrasing, but without citation. This appears by its timing to be a response to the impeachment charge against the President, but has no citation associated with it, and while I'm neither a Constitutional scholar nor a legal expert, my suspicion is that if Congress meant to say "contempt", they would have used that word. The construct "Obstruction of Congress" is not necessarily the same as "Contempt of Congress" or else they would have used the more familiar phrase. I think if you're going to establish equivalence between the two phrases, there needs to be some additional explanation supported by external sources that bulwarks this assertion. I'm not grinding an axe one way or the other with regard to the impeachment and impending Senate trial, but I do think that Wikipedia, which will be consulted by many during this process, needs to ensure that any changes to information that bears on this is well-researched and supported. Thank you. Eltrace (talk) 14:28, 19 December 2019 (UTC)
