Ashish Parmar (October 8, 1979 – January 23, 2020) was an Indian photographer who is best known for his iPhone photograph that was plastered on billboards across the world. He shoots subjects of varied nature – weddings, high end events, music festivals and wildlife.[1][2] He was the Official Photographer for the Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2010.[3] He is also one among the top 12 Electronic Dance Music photographers in India.[4] In 2016, an image he took of his wife and posted on Instagram was chosen as a part of Apple’s "Shot on iPhone 6S" ad campaign.[5][6] He is also the only Indian photographer to be invited to the Future Music Festival Asia held in Kuala Lumpur in 2014.[7]

Biography

Ashish Parmar was born and brought up in Bangalore. He has been in full-time photography since 1996. He has not had formal education beyond senior secondary (10th grade) and has been into photography for 20 years (from the age of 16)[8]

iPhone 6S campaign

Ashish has been featured in multiple online newspapers about being selected for the iPhone 6S campaign. Pictures that are shot on the iPhone 6S will be featured in the iPhone 6S Photo Gallery. His candid shot of his wife holding a diya in her hand in a red saree with a purple-colored diya cupped in her hands, looking straight into the camera with a natural smile is plastered in hoardings at various locations in India (Bengaluru, Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata) and abroad, including the US (Los Angeles, Manhattan and New York), UK (London) and France.[8] It was the Diwali of 2015, Ashish captured this picture and posted it on Instagram with the #shotoniphone6S.[9] A few weeks later, this picture was chosen by Apple Inc. for promoting the iPhone 6S.[10] His picture was one of 53 images from 41 individuals chosen across the world.[11] Ashish was the only Indian resident to get selected.[1] Ashish and his wife, Raina have also been featured on news channels like ETV News Kannada and News9 after their photo went viral.[12]

Latest Achievements

In April 2019, a photograph shot by Ashish in Maasai Mara, Kenya of a cheetah staring right into the camera was featured on Instagram. The photograph is of a curious sub adult cheetah that was inquisitive enough to check what the trigger noises of the camera was all about. [13]

In May 2018, he was commissioned to shoot the hush-hush wedding of famous Bollywood actor, Neha Dhupia. [14] Ashish had met Dhupia at the MTV Roadies shoot in 2018 and they hit it off and became friends. Talking about his equation with Neha, Ashish says, "I was shooting with MTV Roadies last month and Neha was one of the gang leaders on the show. We became really good friends, spent time together and hit it off really well. I'd take a lot of pictures for the show, and for Neha, who had liked my pictures a lot." [15]When Dhupia called Ashish in May and requested that he comes over to shoot a fashion shoot, Ashish asked for more details so he could pack the right equipment. But Dhupia was evasive. When Ashish was on his way to the airport, Dhupia informed him that he was flying in to shoot her hush-hush wedding.

In March 2018, Ashish shot the MTV Roadies, a very popular youth-based reality show hosted by Rannvijay Singh. [16] In the show, a group of contestants travel to different destinations and participate in various tasks that challenge their physical and mental strength.[1] During the course of the journey, there are vote outs, vote ins, eliminations and game changing twists. Eventually the contestant who manages to survive vote outs and succeed in the final task is chosen as the winner. In 2018,the show was called Roadies Xtreme and was shot in the North Eastern region of India. Ashish Parmar also shot MTV Roadies in 2019 for the show was called Roadies: Real Heroes. In 2019, it was shot in parts of Kerala, Coorg and Chikmagalur.

Diwali seems to be a lucky festival for Ashish. In November 2018, Tim Cook, CEO of Apple Inc. wished the world for Diwali by tweeting 2 photographs shot by Ashish Parmar. [17]

Being one of the first photographers to shoot images of a very rare 'spotted' zebra, Ashish Parmar was featured in newspapers and social media. This week-old foal named Tira by the locals, is said to be born with melanism, a genetic disorder that changes the skin colour. The coat looks brownish in most places hence seems spotted instead of striped.[18]

The stripe pattern on a zebra is like a fingerprint on a human. Each zebra has different stripes than the other. These stripes are said to function as a distraction to ward off horseflies. These flies are irritating and dangerous. So not only does Tira have to worry about horseflies, but also about standing out in the vast grasslands of Masai Mara. It is also believed that the stripes help regulate a zebra’s temperature. Ashish's image was featured by numerous wildlife and nature handles on Instagram like Earth Focus and Wildlife Planet; and won accolades.
