How is this place run?

Let's see: everything we write must be from a reputable source like a book or a government website or some such; we must maintain neutral point of view in everything we write, anyone can edit any page other than George W. Bush, which is our most precious article, and use for of these things (~) to sign your name. You already know that, I think. Anything else? There are almost 1000 administrators who can delete, block users, and protect pages. If you need help figuring something out, ask - {{helpme}} - or ask me. Thank you for voting in my RfA which at 51/20/6 unfortunately did not achieve consensus. In closing the nomination, Essjay remarked that it was one of the better discussed RfAs seen recently and I would like to thank you and all others who chose to vote for making it as such. It was extremely humbling to see the large number of support votes, and the number of oppose votes and comments will help me to become stronger. I hope to run again for adminship soon. It's very hard to say. You are just beginning, and have much potential. Keep it up, and once you have 3000-4000+ edits, I suggest you have another edit review, or even try out. RFA is a serious business, and many have strict guidelines. bibliomaniac 1 5 02:05, 12 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It depends. Generally 3000+ is encouraged, although if you have top, high quality edits such as User:Opabinia regalis, who passed RFA with about 2000+ edits, it is possible. bibliomaniac 1 5 05:22, 13 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Barack Obama

Before getting into a revert war, you might want to check out the talk page (and the archives) as to why the Senate Historical Office phrase is in there. It was a compromise that was implemented after a very long argument erupted on the talk page over Mr. Obama's race...I, for one, am not keen on revisiting the issue... Actually, the argument was about whether it was okay to say "he is the fifth African American Senator in U.S. history and the only African American presently serving in the U.S. Senate" without qualifying with an "according to..." Some objected to this wording because it lacked a qualifying "according to...". The "according to the senate historical office" bit was the compromise that was reached, and the consensus at the talk page indicated it was fine (as opposed to the bare "he is..." version). See the lengthy discussions here. I'm afraid that your edit will just open up a can of worms once more. I'm not going to revert again, but I urge you to reconsider your change and discuss it at the talk page first. Gzkn 08:07, 13 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

If I can jump in... I came over here to say something similar as Gzkn did - I had not seen this exchange here earlier. I did reinstate the consensus wording, and added a note to Talk. I think the whole thing is overblown and unnecessary, but I know how hard it is to reach consensus on anything on wiki, and I want to respect that, especially after I finally took the time to slog through the archives and saw what led to this. So I am more than willing to go along with it - at worst it's a little redundant since the historical office part is in the note, but that's not so serious - at least there was agreement that this was an accurate neutral statement. Honestly, I'm a lot more concerned about the virulent vandalism this page experiences - which your edit was certainly not - than I am about the precise wording of Obama's ethnicity. It's not exactly as if it were in doubt - it's all laid out in the article, he himself describes his background quite clearly - and I have no idea why there is so much fuss here about it. Thanks! Regarding FA, here are some places to look:

Wikipedia:Featured article candidates - articles that may reach FA status soon but still need some work
Wikipedia:Former featured articles - articles that were de-featured from FA
Wikipedia:Article Creation and Improvement Drive - articles that others have thought are great choices for making into FAs; one is chosen to be worked on collaboratively per week. You might help on the current article, work on one of the articles that may be chosen in the future, or one of the ones that was removed.
Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team/Assessment categorizes article quality, so you might edit an article rated A-class or Good Article-class.

I'm not in the band The Shiny Diamonds

In fact, I have never even met them before. I currently live in Paris and they live in Vancouver (my home town). I heard their music for the first time today on their myspace page. I created The Shiny Diamonds controversy page because I firmly believe that it can meet all wikipedia policies and guidelines. It has been covered by CBC Radio One, the Washington Post, and by City News International. My main motivation for getting this one article to stay alive is that I believe that wikipedia should not become the sum of SOME human knowledge. I recently learned that I'm an inclusionist. Because I'm a still learning the proper ways to create articles on Wikipedia, I have probably screwed it all up. I could really use some help from someone like you. Thank you for your help so far.
