The scholars are divided in their opinion about the origin of the Gurjars. Most historians believe the Gurjars had an indigenous origin and regard them kshatriyas of the Suryavanshi but British Colonel James Tod regard them foreigners. He has tried to prove that Pratiharas were foreigners. According to him they were descents of saka. The word Gurjar is also associated with the Pratiharas. when the Gupta Empire was on its last leg under the weight of repeated invasions of the huns, at that time these Gurjars got an opportunity to carve out the small states in Punjab, Marwa and Bharuch. But Majority the Indian historians believe in their Indian origin. They regards Gurjars as a descendant of huns and Then, Pratiharas were the descendant of Gurjars. Their ancestors originally belong to the earlier Gurjar regions in the south-east of Rajasthan. Therefore, they were called Gurjars. In the legends they have been mentioned as Suryavanshi Kshatriyas. It was the two dynasties of Medieval India. The line of Harishchandra ruled in Mandor, Marwar(Jodhpur, Rajasthan), during the 6th to 9th centuries CE, generally with feudatory status. The line of Nagabhata I ruled first at Ujjain and later at Kannauj during the 8th to 11th centuries. Other Gurjars lines existed, but they did not take the surname Pratihara. The pratihar were the most important dynasty of medieval Northern India, and their disappearance marked a stage in the political decline that accompanied the Muslim conquest.[1][2][3][4]
