@Pete unseth: You can request the deletion of any category you create by adding the {{db-self}} to it, which is a quicker way than anything I can do. Just generally, it's always a good idea to have a look around the existing category hierarchy before creating a new one - and in fact it's necessary to do that as you should always categorise any new category so that humans and maintenance bots can find it, it's important that they are attached to the existing category hierarchy and are not just metatags. If you're interested in that kind of thing then you may want to look at Wikipedia:WikiProject_Military_history/Assessment#Statistics and the associated talk page. Just a personal note, because I see that you've been getting a lot of notices about categories getting speedy deleted under C1: even in the comprehensive "by country" or "by year" schemes, the rule still isn't that we create the categories now and wait for the eventual creation of actual content for them — it's that the initial creation of the category waits until the appropriate number of articles to file in the category already exists. So any of these categories can be recreated once they have content that needs them, but they're not supposed to sit around as empty categories in advance of content. @Bearcat: - I'm well aware of how categories work, every single category I create has content at the time I create it. The number that get deleted are pretty minimal considering I've created 10,000's of categories on the backlog at Special:WantedCategories - one might argue that the deletion crew might want to be a bit less zealous on deleting current-year categories that are highly likely to be needed again within weeks (sometimes days), but I understand why they choose not to use discretion on that kind of thing.Le Deluge (talk) 23:21, 28 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I just started creating categories from the Wanted Categories page and a day later, they were all tagged CSD C1 to be deleted! So, I better understand what you may be going through. @DePiep: I'm well aware of when to CFD thank you. If you were to read WP:CFDS you will note that "Categories that qualify for speedy deletion (per Wikipedia:Criteria for speedy deletion, e.g. "patent nonsense", "recreation") can be tagged with the regular speedy tags". Yes I could have C2E'd it, but it's not wrong to do it the way I did - the point about "corrupting the pages" only applies if there is "significant history" - which there wasn't in this case as the only history was me creating the old version with a hyphen a few minutes before. Categories, categories

Hello, Le Deluge,

I know you spend much time working with categories, especially creating categories that are needed. Consequently, a certain percentage of these categories later become empty. Some editors who also work on categories have asked me to skip the notifications for empty categories so I simply uncheck the "Notify editor" box when I tag these categories.

Would you like me to do this for you, as well? Some editors want to know when categories they create suddenly become empty while others create so many categories that they really aren't invested in knowing about their fate.
