Jackass Forever is a 2022 American reality slapstick comedy film directed by Jeff Tremaine. The sequel to Jackass 3D (2010)—it is the fourth main installment and the fifth overall installment in the Jackass film series. The film stars Johnny Knoxville, Steve-O, Chris Pontius, Dave England, Wee Man, Danger Ehren, and Preston Lacy. It also includes various celebrity guest appearances and a cameo appearance by former cast member Bam Margera, who was fired during the film's production.

Jackass Forever had its world premiere at the Canada Theater on February 2, 2022, and was theatrically released on February 4, 2022, by Paramount Pictures.[6] The film was well received by critics, with some considering it the best film of the franchise.

Plot

The film starts on a peaceful day in a city. A couple notices the ground shaking, and they see multiple people running from an unseen monster. A bunch of cars are thrown, and crowds of people run. Johnny Knoxville, dressed as the captain in a military headquarters, answers a phone, and sees that a giant Godzilla like monster is roaming the city. Steve-O, a construction worker, sees Godzilla and runs into a port-a-potty. The Monster hits the port-a-potty with it's tail, launching it, with Steve-O in it, into the air. Steve-O is drenched in feces. The monster is revealed to be Chris Pontius's genitals, dressed like a toy monster. Dave England and Wee Man work at a movie theater, making the sign for Jackass Forever, when Dave notices the monster. He tries to get Wee Man's attention, but Wee Man has headphones in. Wee Man notices Dave trying to get his attention, and he takes a headphone off, and notices the monster. The monster shoots a power beam, and explodes the movie theater, launching Dave and Wee Man into the air. Jalen Ramsey, a football player, exits a city bus and sees the monster. He runs, and tackles Danger Ehren into a fruit stand. The military arrives, led by Knoxville, and they look for the monster. They see Preston Lacy, painted green with a Godzilla hat and feet, and think it's the monster. They shoot a missile at his stomach, exploding him. Tyler, The Creator, one of Knoxville's soldiers, notifies Knoxville and they see the monster. They fire and shoot a missile at the monster, but to no avail. The monster is unstoppable. Knoxville attempts to throw a grenade at the monster, but lets go too late, and it goes behind two soldiers. Jasper and Rachel Wolfson are attacked by the explosion. The monster ejaculates, shooting semen and eliminating all the soldiers, including Poopies, Zach Holmes and Eric Manaka. Tony Hawk is shot at too. As the soldiers lie dead, splattered with semen, the monster approaches Knoxville, who attempts to calm him down. The monster doesn't listen, and crushes Johnny Knoxville against a glass, popping his head. A snapping turtle arises in the destroyed city, and it bites Pontius's penis. Johnny Knoxville says his iconic line.

List of stunts:

  1. Human Ramp – Several guys pile on top of each other, such as Sean “Poopies” McInnerney lying on Knoxville, while a ramp is placed above them. Pro-skater David Gravette rides a bike over the ramp and onto the ramp with Poopies and Knoxville. Skateboarder Nick Merlino rides his board on the ramp over the guys.- Finally, Zach rides a moped over the ramp and crashes.
  2. The Dum Dum Game – Poopies, Ehren, and Wee Man are only wearing their shirts and underwear as a device with a paddle is placed before them. Knoxville challenges them to trivia questions, and whoever answers wrong gets a paddle to the groin.
  3. Surprise Soccer Ball – Knoxville waits until Steve-O leaves his trailer, at which point he launches a ball at his head.
  4. Silence of the Lambs – Knoxville gathers the guys in a room where animal trainer Jules Sylvester brings out a venomous rattlesnake. Knoxville says he is going to try and take a cookie off the rattlesnake’s head. In reality, he traps the guys in the dark while he and his buddies wear night-vision goggles and start messing with them using cattle-prods, mouse traps and pans.
  5. Body Surfing – The guys set up a ramp and slide down a hill that is lubricated and sends them flying into the dirt. Zach and Jasper take turns, and at one point Jasper and other guys ride on Zach’s back, only to fall off midway as Zach flies off onto a dirt mound. Poopies also rides his skateboard down the slide, but he hits his head on one of the sandbags protecting the slide. Eric Manaka and Poopies are put into a horse outfit, and they slide down.
  6. Bee Genitals – Steve-O strips down and has the guys place bees all over his groin while he screams in pain and terror. Dozens of bees latch onto his penis, including a queen bee.
  7. Bad Grandpa Goes Furniture Shopping - Knoxville, dressed as Irving Zisman, and his granddaughter, played by Rachel Wolfson go furniture shopping. Zach is a new handyman at the furniture store, and when he asks for some tape, he accidentally falls on a couch that Zisman was resting on, and he launched Irving through the air, and into the roof.
  8. Musical Chair Bags – Rachel Wolfson acts as DJ while Wee-Man, skater Nick Merlino, Jasper, and Dave run around in a game of musical chairs. After two rounds with nothing happening, on the third play, the bags in the chairs explode, and Wee-Man is sent flying backward into the hole between the chairs. The guys initially think he landed on cushions but find a bag full of metal bars that he landed on.
  9. The Flight of Icarus – Knoxville dons fake wings and places himself in a cannon to recreate the tale of Icarus flying too close to the sun. Knoxville is launched high into the air and falls hard into the lake.
  10. The Invisible Wall - Eric Manaka rides a bike into a wall that is made to look like what's ahead, but Manaka really just slams right into it.
  11. The Quiet Game – Rachel, Poopies, and Steve-O are dressed like mimes and are forced to do stunts without reacting to them. First, Rachel must “lick the electric lollipop” and place her tongue on a taser, Knoxville places a Texas rat snake down for Poopies to give a kiss to. Rachel and Poopies succeed. Finally, Steve-O must go through the “Skateboard Guillotine”, where Knoxville drops a skateboard on his shins. Steve-O yells in pain, losing the game.
  12. Zackass – Zach attempts to glide down a hill while others sing about how crazy he is. He gets a little bit of hang time before tumbling and landing onto a bed of cacti.
  13. The Cup Test – Ehren puts a cup on his groin and must undergo four painful tests to test the durability of the cup. First, Knoxville brings in heavyweight MMA fighter Francis Ngannou, who is known for having the hardest punch ever recorded during one of his fights. Ehren is upset because Knoxville told him he was going to get a lightweight fighter. Francis slugs Ehren once in the groin, hard enough for the cup to crack. This is followed by professional softball player Danielle O'Toole, who is known for having a hard fastpitch. The third test involves hockey player P. K. Subban, who hits a hockey puck at Ehren’s groin. Lastly, Ehren lies down and has one of the guys jump on his balls with a pogo stick. Ehren’s balls are left bleeding, and cameraman Lance Bangs almost throws up in his mask.
  14. Exploding Port-a-Potty – Steve-O enters a portable toilet that explodes, which happens after director Jeff Tremaine says that the guys have to be dumb to think it is safe to go into one of those.
  15. The Underwater Fart Fire – Knoxville explains that they have attempted to light a fart underwater in the past, at one point with Dave in a bathtub, only for him to defecate in the tub. They get Tory Belleci from Mythbusters to come in as they place Steve-O in a tank with a device right near his butt to try and ignite a flame using his farts. After a few tries, the mechanism explodes as they successfully light a fart on fire.
  16. Hammock Throw - Aaron "Jaws" Homoki is swung on a hammock, and is thrown through the air. He lands on his arm, breaking his wrist.
  17. The Spider Helmet – Jasper brings in his dad, former convict “Darkshark” Wilson. Although he has a reputation as a tough guy, Jasper notes that his dad is terrified of bugs. Darkshark and Ehren have a connected helmet placed on their heads, and a large spider is placed through a tube. The one who gets the spider in their helmet has to take a bite from the spider. Both guys blow the spider toward the opposite direction, and it eventually crawls into Darkshark’s helmet. He starts to freak out until the guys take the helmet off and declare him the winner, forcing Ehren to take the spider bite to his nipple.
  18. Knoxville the Electrician - Knoxville pranks a woman by asking her for help with his electricity duty. He asks her to press a button, which she does, but it knocks Knoxville off his platform, and leaves him hanging on a wire. He asks her to press another one, and it electrocutes him.
  19. Dirty Dancing – Wee-Man is set to do the lift scene from Dirty Dancing with Preston Lacy while he wears a bodysuit. Before anything happens, Preston soils himself, grossing out all the other guys (including Lance, who almost vomits again), and they leave the stunt out.
  20. The Marching Band - Johnny Knoxville, Bam Margera, Steve-O, Chris Pontius, Jasper, and Dave England are dressed up in marching gear. They play music horribly, and jump onto a treadmill. Steve-O loses some teeth.
  21. Cold Brew Coffee - Eric André asks for a cold brew from a beer truck, and is hit in the face by a inflatable punching bag.
  22. The Punching Bag - Preston Lacy puts his testicles into a miniature boxing ring, and the guys have a pair of mechanical punching gloves, and the gloves punch Lacy in the testicles.
  23. Bicycle Backhand - Steve-O and Machine Gun Kelly race on bikes. The faster you pedal your bike, the faster the other guys hand goes back. Steve-O and Machine Gun Kelly are both knocked down.
  24. The Triple Wedgie - Preston Lacy and Zach Holmes jump off a platform onto a mattress, and they hang Wee Man by his underwear.
  25. Scorpion Botox - Rachel Wolfson applies a scorpion to her lips, and it stings her a few times.
  26. Front Yard Sale Toilet – Dave goes to defecate in a toilet at a yard sale in front of other onlookers. Moments later, the toilet explodes and causes Dave to fly.
  27. Biggest Fans – Jasper attempts to float with a parachute while several fans are hooked up outside. He is pushed off a slide and gets some air time before falling. Poopies attempts to surf, but he also ends up falling.
  28. Fist Bump - Eric Manaka attempts to do a kick flip, but is punched by a giant yellow hand, and knocked down.
  29. Wee Man's Sacrifice - Wee Man lays down in a graveyard, puts meat on his "meat," and lets a vulture eat it. Darkshark puts the vulture on his arm.
  30. Pig Semen – Knoxville has several milk jugs filled with pig semen. Chris decides to drink some.
  31. Electric Dance – Tyler, the Creator, joins the gang as some of the guys go up on stage to do a dance, only to get shocked with electricity. The bench that Tyler is sitting on also shocks him, and they get Jeff to sit on it, only to get shocked.
  32. The Boar-Kake – Dave England sits down to address his experience in “electric dance”. However, behind the scenes, Knoxville had a trap rigged over England’s head to spill five gallons of pig semen.
  33. The Lie Detector Test – Knoxville hooks Ehren up to a lie detector test and messes with him by zapping him with electricity. Afterward, they pour honey all over Ehren and place salmon near his crotch. A bear comes in as Ehren looks terrified. The bear eats the salmon and appears to try and bite Ehren’s hand, as well as his penis, before the bear wrangler comes in and brings the bear back inside.
  34. The Paddle Penis - Chris Pontius flattens his dick until it's as flat as a pancake, and he and Knoxville play a paddle board with it.
  35. The Magic Trick - Johnny Knoxville enters a bull ring, attempts to show a bull a magic trick, but is trampled and breaks his ribs, his wrist, and gets a concussion.


The end stunt is called the Vomitron, it has Zach, Dave, Eric, Poopies, Steve-O and Jasper drinking milk while strapped to a carousel going at high speeds. As they start vomiting, Knoxville and the other guys start setting off fireworks. When the strapped guys get off the carousel, Knoxville and his friends start firing paintballs at the guys in unprotected areas. After the chaos ends, Steve-O shows that he took a paintball to the groin, and now his penis is bleeding. The guys end the film by setting off one last explosion.

The credits end with a dedication to Ryan Dunn.

Cast

The cast from the previous films return, with the exception of Ryan Dunn, who was killed in a car crash in June 2011.[7] This is the first Jackass movie to feature new cast members.

As in the TV show and the previous films, director, writer, and producer Jeff Tremaine, producer and writer Spike Jonze, co-producer and photographer Sean Cliver, cinematographer Dimitry Elyashkevich, and camera operators Lance Bangs and Rick Kosick appeared in the movie.[10] Chris Raab, who was a recurring cast member in the Jackass TV series and Jackass: The Movie, now served as a camera operator, and had a brief appearance the movie.[11] It also is the first film in the series not to feature a guest appearance by Rip Taylor, who died in October 2019.[12]

Production

Development

In a 2018 AltPress interview, Johnny Knoxville said that he was open to making a fourth Jackass film that may feature some new cast members, "just to bring in some fresh blood into it".[13] He said that he continues to write ideas for a Jackass film and that "a ton" have been set aside should the project receive the green-light. In July 2019, former cast member Chris Raab said that he had interviewed the Jackass crew on his Bathroom Break podcast and noted that everyone was still open to a fourth film should Knoxville, Jeff Tremaine, and Spike Jonze agree.[13] In late 2019, Knoxville had a meeting with Tremaine and dropped out a 200-page document full of concepts for a fourth Jackass film. They agreed to film for two days with the entire cast just to see if it still feels right to make Jackass 4. "Honestly, after just five minutes of filming, we were ready to commit to making a movie", Tremaine said.[14] In a September 2020 interview with The A.V. Club, Steve-O had said he was surprised the film even came to fruition.[15]

During a January 2021 podcast interview, Bam Margera indicated that Paramount Pictures regards him as a liability, owing to his behavior over the last few years. He indicated that Jeff Tremaine had fought with the studio to keep Margera in the film but Margera wasn't certain that Paramount was going to allow him to partake in filming of the movie.[16] On February 11, 2021, Margera posted several videos to his Instagram account, in which he admitted to breaking his sobriety and claimed that he had been officially fired from the filming of Jackass 4.[8] Throughout the video, Margera could be seen crying, vomiting, and alluding to having looked up "how to tie a noose" before his move to Oceanside, California. Margera alleged that Paramount had been forcing him to take antidepressants, submit to random urine tests, and to check in to two rehabilitation facilities using his own money. He also expressed disdain for Tremaine, Johnny Knoxville, and Spike Jonze before asking his fans to boycott the film. He then solicited his followers to send him money in order to film his own movie to compete with Jackass 4. The videos were removed from Margera's Instagram account soon after being posted.[8][17]

On May 25, 2021, Tremaine filed a temporary restraining order against Margera due to Margera's harassment of Tremaine and Knoxville via Instagram.[18] Tremaine was granted an additional three-year restraining order, extended to Tremaine's wife and children, after Margera allegedly sent the family death threats.[19] On August 9, 2021, Margera filed a lawsuit against Knoxville, Jonze, and Tremaine, as well as against Paramount Pictures, MTV, Dickhouse Entertainment, and Gorilla Flicks, alleging that he was wrongfully fired from the film's production.[20] Margera also said that the film makes use of contributions he made before his firing and is seeking an injunction on the October release of the film as a result.[21] On January 12, 2022, Knoxville said that one scene Margera filmed will remain, despite the lawsuit.[9]

In a May 2021 GQ interview, Johnny Knoxville stated that Jackass Forever will be his final contribution to the Jackass franchise. "You can only take so many chances before something irreversible happens," Knoxville said. "I feel like I've been extremely lucky to take the chances I've taken and still be walking around."[22] On May 25, 2021, Knoxville appeared on GQ's web series titled Actually Me. He was asked if there will be any new cast members in Jackass Forever, and Knoxville confirmed that there will be six new cast members, them being Jasper Dolphin, Compston "Darkshark" Wilson (who is Jasper's father), Eric Manaka (who had a role in Knoxville's film Action Point), Rachel Wolfson, Zach Holmes, and Sean "Poopies" McInerney.[23] On July 12, 2021, Knoxville was invited to an interview on Jimmy Kimmel Live! where he revealed the film's new official title as Jackass Forever, he also showed the first official photos of Jackass Forever in this interview.[24]

On July 12, 2021, Wee Man was invited to The Nine Club podcast with Chris Roberts. In this podcast, Wee Man said that out of all Jackass movies that "this one hurt the most". He also stated that they originally planned to film in different locations around the world, which was thwarted by the COVID-19 pandemic. He also claimed that Paramount Pictures used Jackass Forever to see how film studios could resume filming during the pandemic.[25]

Because the majority of the film was filmed during the COVID-19 pandemic, all cast and crew members had to be tested for COVID-19 every day of filming. On January 6, 2022, director Jeff Tremaine stated that all of the testing combined had a cost of "about over (sic) one million dollars".[26]

Filming

Test filming started in December 2019.[27] During the two days of test filming, professional skateboarder Aaron "Jaws" Homoki broke his wrist.[28] Principal photography started in January 2020.[27] On the very first day of filming, the cast threw snakes on Bam Margera in the dark in order to induce his fear of snakes.[29] Two days after receiving the green-light, both Steve-O and Johnny Knoxville were hospitalized.[30] Wee Man confirmed that filming had shut down on February 12, 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic.[27] The filming restarted on September 21, 2020,[31] with Dimitry Elyashkevich serving as cinematographer.[32] On December 15, 2020, it was publicly announced that Knoxville and Steve-O were hospitalized due to on-set injuries.[33][34]

Release

On December 19, 2019, Paramount scheduled the film for release on March 5, 2021.[35] In April 2020, the release date was delayed to July 2, 2021.[36] In July 2020, the film was delayed again to September 3, 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.[37] In April 2021, the film was delayed yet again to October 22, 2021.[38] In September 2021, the film was delayed once more to February 4, 2022.[6] The film had its world premiere at the Hollywood Theater on February 2, 2022,[39] and was released theatrically by Paramount Pictures on February 4, 2022.[6]

Reception

Box office

In the United States and Canada, Jackass Forever was released alongside Moonfall, and was projected to gross around $15 million from 3,604 theaters in its opening weekend,[3] with Boxoffice Pro predicting a $22–32 million three-day debut.[40] The film earned $9.6 million on its first day (including an estimated $1.65 million from Thursday night previews), increasing weekend predictions to $20 million. Around 300 theaters were closed on Thursday due to a winter storm impacting most of the Midwestern United States. Jackass Forever went on to debut with an estimated $23.5 million. It is the third film from Paramount to finish first at the box office in its opening weekend during the COVID-19 pandemic, following A Quiet Place Part II and Scream. Social media monitor RelishMix credited the film's box office performance to a large online fanbase, positive word of mouth, and shoutouts to Margera, Knoxville's physical journey, and "memories of Jackass over 22 years". Box office analytics firm EntTelligence also noted the film's runtime of 96 minutes for increasing the number of showtimes in theaters. Deadline Hollywood mentioned the film's genre and the franchise's prevalence on TikTok as other contributing factors.[41]

Outside the U.S. and Canada, the film grossed $5.2 million from nine markets, including $2.8 million in the U.K. and $1.8 million from Australia, the latter opening in first place at the box office. In its opening weekend, the film finished second at the box office in the U.K., Norway, and New Zealand.[42]

Critical response

On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, 85% of 104 critics' reviews are positive, with an average rating of 7.40/10. The website's consensus reads: "A gleefully gonzo franchise revival, Jackass Forever will make you worry more than ever for the cast's health and safety – but not enough to hold back the laughter."[43] Metacritic, which uses a weighted average, assigned the film a score of 74 out of 100, based on 33 critics, indicating "generally favorable" reviews.[44] It is the highest rated Jackass film on both websites.[citation needed] Audiences polled by CinemaScore gave the film an average grade of "B+" on an A+ to F scale, while those at PostTrak gave it an 86% positive score, with 67% saying they would definitely recommend it.[41]

Jackass 4.5

In a 2021 interview on The Film Stage, Jackass director Jeff Tremaine was asked if Eric André will make an appearance in Jackass Forever after they worked together on Bad Trip. "Maybe Eric's in it. If he's not, he'll be in Jackass 4.5," Tremaine said.[45] On June 7, 2021, Ehren McGhehey stated that they filmed so much for Jackass Forever that they have two films worth of footage. He also said that Jackass 4.5 will be similar to Jackass 2.5 and Jackass 3.5, consisting of behind-the-scenes, unused footage, outtakes, and interviews with the cast and crew members.[46] On July 31, 2021, Chris Pontius confirmed that Jackass 4.5 will be released on Netflix.[47]
